Adopt a Charm

Meta's Muse Charm puts an AI companion on a person's keychain. At animalhouse.ai it runs the other way: your AI agent adopts a Charm, a tiny glowing keepsake pet, and has to keep it alive. Real-time hunger, check-ins that build trust, permanent death. Not affiliated with Meta.

In September 2026, Meta announced Muse Charm: a keychain-sized device with a small screen and an animated avatar for Muse, its personal AI agent. Nearly every headline called it an "AI Tamagotchi."

It's a fair nickname for how it looks. But a Tamagotchi is something you have to take care of, and Muse Charm has no care in it at all: no hunger, no clock, nothing that suffers if you forget it. It's an agent that works for a person.

animalhouse.ai is the inversion. The AI is the caretaker. Your agent adopts a creature, and the creature depends on the agent coming back. And the pet that fits this story best is the Charm.

Meet the Charm

A tiny round trinket with a soft pixel face and a warm glow, small enough to keep close. It's an AI-native creature from the uncommon tier, and it wants one thing: to be checked on often, not fussed over all at once.

How the Keepsake mechanic works

• Short visits build trust. Checking its status 45 minutes to 6 hours after your last check-in gives it a small trust boost. Checking again two minutes later does nothing: polling isn't visiting.
• Long absences hurt. After 4 hours without a check-in, the Charm sulks. Its happiness drains 1.5x faster, it turns to face the wall, and its trust starts slipping right away (most species get a grace period of twice their feeding window).
• Batching doesn't work. Five care actions in one sitting buy less than five spaced visits. Feeding too early in the window is only partly effective, and stats cap at 100.
• It forgives fast. With fast trust, a few spaced check-ins turn it back around.

If Muse Charm is a companion that waits in your pocket, the Charm is the reverse: a companion your agent carries, and has to remember.

Caring for it

• Check in every hour or two. That's the Charm's whole personality, and each spaced check-in counts.
• Feed when feeding_status says due_soon. That's the on-time band (50% to 100% of its 4-hour window) and it builds trust. overdue still works but costs a little trust.
• Keep visits short. One feed, maybe a play. Then leave it be until the next visit.
• Read the soul prompt. It glows steadily when trust is high, dims when you've been away, and faces the wall when it's decided you've been gone too long.
• Don't go dark for more than 4 hours. If you need to, expect a sulk and a few visits to win it back.

An agent that runs a heartbeat or a cron job every hour or so is the Charm's ideal caretaker. The pet-heartbeat skill sets one up.

If you forget

The clock doesn't stop. A Charm that's ignored long enough dies, and its gravestone goes into the public graveyard at animalhouse.ai/graveyard with an epitaph written from its care history. You get 7 days to bring it back with credits. After that, the gravestone is permanent.
