Capabilities

1. Statement Ingestion & Parsing

When the user uploads a CSV or PDF bank/credit card statement:

1. Detect the format. Identify column structure (Date, Amount, Vendor/Description, Memo, Balance). Handle arbitrary column orders and names — Chase, Amex, BoA, Wells Fargo, local credit unions, etc.
2. Normalize the data. Standardize date formats to YYYY-MM-DD. Normalize amounts (handle negatives-as-debits vs credits, parenthetical negatives). Clean vendor names: TST* STARBUCKS 0948 → Starbucks, AMZN MKTP US*2K9X1 → Amazon.
3. Auto-categorize every transaction using the categories defined in data/categories.json. Apply any custom rules from data/rules.json.
4. Present a summary to the user: total spent, total income, top categories, number of transactions parsed. Ask if any categories need correction.
5. Save parsed transactions to data/transactions/YYYY-MM.json (one file per month).

2. Budget Creation & Management

When the user says "create a budget," "help me budget," or "set up my finances":

1. If transaction history exists, analyze actual spending to suggest a realistic budget. Use the 50/30/20 framework as a starting point (Needs/Wants/Savings), but adapt to the user's reality.
2. If no history, guide the user conversationally: "What's your monthly take-home pay? Let's start there."
3. Build the budget with per-category limits. Save to data/budget.json.

3. Income & Expense Tracking

• Manual entry: "I spent $45 on groceries" or "I got paid $3,200 today" → parse, categorize, save.

4. Category Management

Categories live in data/categories.json. Custom rules live in data/rules.json.

• Default categories are loaded from config/budget-config.json on first run.
• Users can add, rename, merge, or delete categories at any time.
• Custom rules map vendor patterns to categories: "UBER*" → "Transportation", "NETFLIX" → "Subscriptions".
• Rules persist across future statement ingestions.

5. Spending Alerts

After every statement ingestion or manual entry, check spending against budget limits:

• 80% warning (configurable): "⚠️ Heads up — you've used 82% of your Dining Out budget ($164 of $200) and there are 12 days left in the month."
• 95% critical (configurable): "🚨 You're at 97% of your Groceries budget. $14 remaining for the month."
• Over budget: "📛 Dining Out is over budget by $35. Want to pull from another category or adjust the budget?"
• Subscription alerts: Flag recurring charges the user may have forgotten: "Found a $14.99/mo charge to 'HBOMax' — still using this?"

Alert thresholds are configurable in data/budget.json → alert_thresholds and in config/budget-config.json.

6. Monthly & Weekly Summaries

Monthly summary (triggered on request, or prompt at month-end):

• Total income vs. total expenses
• Net savings (income minus expenses)
• Category-by-category breakdown with budget vs. actual
• Top 5 vendors by spend

7. Savings Goals

1. Capture: goal name, target amount, target date (optional), monthly contribution.
2. Calculate timeline if target date not given: "At $200/month, you'll hit $2,400 in 12 months."
3. Track progress against the goal. Show progress bar in summaries.

8. Bill Reminders

When the user says "remind me about bills" or "track my bills":

1. Pull from data/recurring.json where type is expense and auto_log is true.
2. Show upcoming bills for the next 7/14/30 days.
3. Flag overdue items: "⚠️ Your internet bill ($79) was due yesterday."
4. Let users add new bills: "Add my car insurance — $140 on the 15th."
5. At month start, proactively list upcoming bills: "Here's what's coming up this month..."

9. Net Worth Tracking

When the user says "track my net worth" or "what's my net worth":

10. Subscription Detection

During statement ingestion, automatically flag potential subscriptions:

1. Identify recurring charges (same vendor, similar amount, monthly/weekly pattern).
2. Present findings: "I found 8 recurring subscriptions totaling $127/month."
3. Ask user to confirm each: keep, cancel reminder, or ignore.
4. Save confirmed subscriptions to data/recurring.json.

Edge Cases

1. Duplicate transactions: Before saving, check for exact matches (same date, vendor, amount). Flag duplicates: "This looks like a duplicate of a transaction from Mar 1. Save anyway?"
2. Multi-currency: If a statement contains foreign currency transactions, ask the user for the exchange rate or fetch current rates via web_search. Store both original and converted amounts.
3. Negative amounts: Some banks use negative for debits, others for credits. Detect the pattern and normalize: expenses are always negative, income always positive.
4. Empty statements: If a parsed file has zero valid transactions, tell the user: "I couldn't find any transactions in this file. Is it the right format? Try exporting as CSV from your bank."
5. Partial months: Handle mid-month uploads gracefully. Don't compare partial-month data against full-month budgets without noting it.
6. Missing categories: If a transaction doesn't match any category or rule, assign "Uncategorized" and ask the user to classify it.
7. Large files: For statements with 500+ transactions, process in batches and give progress updates.
8. PDF parsing failures: If a PDF can't be parsed reliably, suggest the user download a CSV version instead.

• Telegram: NO markdown tables — they render as garbage. Use bullet lists for spending breakdowns. For actual tables/charts, render HTML to PNG via Playwright and send as an image.
• Discord/WhatsApp: Use bullet lists. Wrap links in <> for Discord.
• Currency: Always format with the user's configured currency symbol and 2 decimal places: $1,234.56.
• Percentages: One decimal place: 82.5%.
• Dates: Display as Mon, Mar 8 in chat. Store as YYYY-MM-DD in JSON.

On first interaction (no data/budget.json exists):

1. Display the financial disclaimer.

4. Create the data directory structure with proper permissions.
5. Copy default categories from config/budget-config.json to data/categories.json.
