Proxmox Backup Server Manager

Create and manage Proxmox Backup Server (PBS) backups for VMs and LXC containers. Guided first-time setup including PBS installation, NAS storage, Proxmox host access, and target registration. Use when the user asks to back up, list backups, check status, or set up PBS from scratch.

Three phases: discover → setup → operate.

1. Discover

Before any backup command, determine:

1. Does ~/.openclaw/credentials/pbs-backup.json exist?
2. Is PBS reachable?
3. Which VMID on which host?

If config exists and exactly one target is registered → back it up directly. If multiple targets exist → ask: which one? If config is missing → start setup (phase 2). If user says "back up X" and X is registered → go.

Never guess hostnames, storage names, VMIDs, or node names.

2. Setup

Guide the user through setup conversationally. Ask one block at a time, confirm before executing.

Execution Mode

Before starting setup, ask: "Do you want me to run the commands for you, or should I give you instructions to follow?"

• Agent executes — if SSH or API access to the target host is available, run commands directly. Confirm each step before executing.
• User executes — print the exact commands. Wait for the user to confirm completion before moving to the next step.

Credentials (passwords, tokens) will pass through the chat. This is expected — they are needed once for setup and are not stored in agent logs or memory. For SMB credentials: if the agent has SSH access, write the credentials file directly. If not, tell the user to create it on the PBS host.

A. PBS present?

Ask: "Do you already have a Proxmox Backup Server running?"

If yes:

• PBS IP/hostname
• Port (default 8007)
• Datastore name
• Skip to block C.

If no → offer installation help:

Ask:

• Where should PBS run? (LXC recommended, VM, or bare metal)
• On which Proxmox host?
• Container/VM ID? (show free IDs if access available)
• Hostname? (suggest pbs)
• IP config? (DHCP or static — ask)
• Resources: suggest 2 vCPU, 4 GB RAM, 32 GB disk — confirm with user
• Root password for PBS
• Enable SSH? If yes: which credentials?

Do not execute until the user confirms the plan.

B. Backup storage

Ask: "Should backups be stored locally on PBS or on a NAS?"

If local:

• Datastore path (suggest /backup)
• Done.

If NAS:

• NAS IP and share path (NFS or SMB)
• Is the share already mounted in PBS?
  • If yes: mount path
  • If no: offer to mount it (need NAS IP, export path, mount point)
• Create datastore on that mount path

C. Proxmox host access

For each Proxmox host that should send backups:

• Host IP
• API token (user, token name, secret) — guide creation if needed
• Test connection

If ~/.openclaw/credentials/proxmox.json exists (from proxmox-multi-control skill), offer to import.

D. Add PBS as storage in Proxmox

Ask: "Is PBS already added as storage on your Proxmox host?"

• If yes: what's the storage name?
• If no: guide through adding it (WebUI steps or CLI command)

E. Register backup targets

Auto-discover all VMs and containers from all configured Proxmox hosts via API. Present the full list to the user with VMID, name, type, host, and status. Suggest all running VMs/CTs as targets (exclude PBS itself if it's a target host). Ask: "Which ones should I register as backup targets?" — offer "all running" as default. The user can exclude specific ones or add stopped ones.

For each selected target, store:

• VMID
• Type: lxc or qemu
• Proxmox host
• Node name (auto-detected from API)
• Friendly name (from Proxmox, user can override)

F. Save and test

Save config → ~/.openclaw/credentials/pbs-backup.json (chmod 600). Run test backup on first target.

3. Operate

When user says "make a backup" without specifying:

• 1 target → run it
• multiple targets → ask "Back up all X targets?" (Yes/No buttons). If Yes → run all sequentially. If No → ask which specific target(s).
• 0 targets → run setup
• "back up X" → only that specific target

Rules

• Always set storage explicitly in vzdump calls.
• Use vzdump --mode snapshot, never pct snapshot (fails with bind mounts).
• Backups are incremental and space-efficient.
• Bind mounts (NFS, host dirs) are automatically excluded by vzdump.
• Config missing → fail clearly, point to setup.
• Can reuse proxmox.json from proxmox-multi-control but does not require it.
• Do not store passwords or token secrets in agent memory, logs, or daily notes.

Security Notes

Automated security scanners may flag this skill as suspicious. This is expected for any infrastructure management skill and not a sign of malware. Here's why:

• Credentials in chat — Setup requires API tokens and optionally SMB credentials to be entered once. They are stored locally in ~/.openclaw/credentials/pbs-backup.json (chmod 600) and not logged by the agent.
• SSL verification disabled — Proxmox VE and PBS use self-signed certificates by default. verify_ssl=False is required for most homelab setups. If you use trusted certificates, you can set "verify_ssl": true in your config.
• System modifications — The skill can install PBS, mount NAS shares, and edit /etc/fstab. These are core functions, not side effects. The agent always asks before executing any of these commands.
