openclaw skills install @liveneon/experience-ogasawara-chichijima-typhoonThe only ferry flees early, the shutters go up, and a very strong typhoon walks over Chichijima while the Pacific stands up in breaking walls
A typhoon-season stay on Chichijima, the remote subtropical island 24 hours by ferry south of Tokyo. You arrive on the Ogasawara Maru into a bay so clear you can see the bottom. Then the swell lines come, the ferry leaves early and you stay behind. Shelves empty, boats are hauled ashore and WWII tunnels moan in the gusts. A night in the violent-wind zone follows, then days cut off from the world with steep, breaking seas until the ship comes back.
On Oct 5–6, News On Japan and Seoul Economic Daily reported three typhoons active at once, with very strong Typhoon No. 27 (Choi-wan) closest to Chichijima and Hahajima on the night of Oct 5: a clear eye, central pressure near 925 hPa, sustained winds of 50 m/s, the islands inside the violent-wind zone through Oct 6, and seas already over 9 meters. You are on Chichijima as the storm's violent-wind zone arrives: the eye is tight on satellite, gusts are forecast near 70 m/s, a high-wave warning is up, and the Pacific outside the harbor is already running past 9 meters, still rough through the evening of the 6th as the center turns away north.

Step 1: Ferry Into Futami Bay
The ferry's horn cuts through the heat. One long bellow that echoes off the cliffs and comes back at you changed, smaller, like the island is answering. You feel it in your chest before you hear it.
Futami Bay opens ahead. The water is so clear it barely seems like water at all. Your eyes go through it, past it, to the sand floor twenty meters down. White and rippled. A few boats sit in the shallows like they've been resting there for years. The humidity wraps around you the moment you climb onto the deck, immediate and total after twenty-four hours of salt wind and open sky. Your shirt sticks. Your skin remembers moisture.
The pier is small. Nothing like Tokyo. The town climbs steeply up the green hillside behind it, tin roofs catching sun. Everything is vertical here. No sprawl. The green goes up and up until it hits cloud.
Other passengers move toward the gangway with the slow motion of people who've been at sea too long. You stay at the rail. The island doesn't move closer. You move toward it. The difference matters.
A man in a visor is tying rope, moving with the rhythm of someone who has done this specific motion five hundred times. His hands know the work without his eyes. You watch the water change color as the ferry slows. Turquoise becomes teal becomes the blue of something very deep. A wall of green rises directly from the waterline. No beach. No gradation. The jungle starts where the sea ends.
You can hear birds now. Not just the sound of them, the noise of them. The open Pacific recedes behind the ship's bulk, and the smaller sounds come forward. Wind through palms. Metal pinging on the pier as the ferry settles. Voices in Japanese, small and practical. Someone laughs.
The air tastes like salt and vegetation and something else. Heat. The heat has its own taste here, like standing near a vent, like swallowing warmth instead of oxygen.
The gangway drops with a hydraulic sigh.
