Riding Out a Major Hurricane Landfall and Aftermath in Manzanillo, Mexico

A major Pacific hurricane bears down on Manzanillo: cranes locked at the port, plywood on the malecón, then the long dark days after the eyewall

Over more than a week on Mexico's Pacific coast, you live through a major hurricane in Manzanillo, Colima. The warning flags go up and the port shuts. Families queue for water jugs and the surf rises along Playa Miramar. Then come the eyewall at night and the eerie calm of the eye. In the slow aftermath the power is out, mud slides down the hillside colonias, Highway 200 is cut, the Navy patrols in the dark, and crocodiles roam flooded estuaries until the lights return block by block.

Why Now

As of Saturday morning 10 October, the National Hurricane Center had Simon at Category 4 with 150 mph winds about 115 miles south-southwest of Manzanillo, with landfall expected late Saturday or Sunday between Colima and Jalisco; AP, The Washington Post and the NHC are leading with it alongside the Gulf storm, and Jalisco has already suspended classes and started coastal evacuations. You are on the Manzanillo waterfront as the warning runs from Punta San Telmo to Punta Mita, flights are already cancelled, and coastal towns in Jalisco are emptying. Through the day the surf stands up, plywood goes on the glass, and by night the wind is climbing toward the eyewall while 10 to 20 inches of rain, locally 30, starts the hillsides moving.

What Awaits You

Step 1: Warning on the Malecón

You step off the taxi onto Boulevard Miguel de la Madrid and the air closes around you at once. It sits on your skin like wet cloth. No wind. That's the first wrong thing.

The malecón stretches before you, that long spine of Manzanillo where locals walk and tourists photograph the sunset. Today it feels abandoned even though people are here. A couple walks a dog near the sailfish sculpture, that iconic bronze rising from the pavement, its sail catching nothing. The water beyond is flat. Impossible. The Pacific doesn't do flat. But there it is: the bay like polished steel, so smooth you can see the sky reflected pale at the edges.

Your phone buzzes. Then again. Messages stacking up. The hurricane is a day out, maybe less. Categories keep changing. Everyone has an opinion, a track, a screenshot from a weather service. You silence it. Around you, the ordinary work of preparation has begun without sirens or announcements. A shopkeeper pulls plywood sheets from a truck outside a hotel. Not rushing. Just methodical. He's done this before.

Walking north toward the port, you pass the fish market. The vendor stands in the doorway, hosing down crushed ice. He glances at the sky once, then returns to the routine. Above, the crane at the container terminal is being locked in place, frozen in a half-turn. The movement stops. The port authority has made its decision.

A woman emerges from a tienda with three plastic jugs of water stacked in her arms. Not panicked. Just getting ahead. You notice more of them now: the small preparations. Rope coiled in someone's garage door. A family securing a boat awning. The city is tightening itself.

You stand at the malecón's edge. Beyond the railing there is a peculiar brightness in the sky, almost metallic, and not a single swell on water that should be restless. The sailfish bronze is warm under your palm. Sweat slides down your spine and stops at your belt.
