openclaw skills install @liveneon/experience-kolkata-durga-puja-ashtami-pandal-hoppingDhak drums, pushpanjali queues and rope-lined crowds through north Kolkata's pandals on Durga Puja's busiest day, from dawn to the last metro
Maha Ashtami, the peak day of Durga Puja, in north Kolkata's old lanes. Queue for morning pushpanjali, eat bhog khichuri off a leaf plate, cut through Kumartuli's emptied idol workshops, sit out the October humidity, then join a night of lights, police barricades, crowd caps and real crush on wet pavement. Watch Sandhi Puja at an old Sovabazar household, smell dhunuchi smoke, and limp home on the late metro. Loud, devout, humid and sometimes frightening.
Today, Sunday 18 October, is Maha Ashtami, the busiest day of Durga Puja, and Saturday’s rain crush at the Chorbagan pandal killed at least 19 people and injured 25, so the festival is on Sky News, the Hindustan Times, Times of India and Wikipedia’s current-events desk while the city is still full of pandal crowds. You are in north Kolkata’s narrow lanes on Ashtami: dhak drums, incense, and the smell of khichuri, morning pushpanjali queues stretching hundreds of metres, then night lights on the idols. Rain-slick pavement from Saturday is still underfoot, and several famous pandals have shut their gates or capped entry after the crush.

Step 1: Morning on Wet Lanes
You surface from the Shyambazar metro station into a city that has already been awake for hours. The step onto street level is wet. Your shoes find puddles left from last night's rain, and the air tastes different than the metro's recycled cool. It tastes like marigold and wet concrete and something burning in the distance.
The lane ahead is narrow, lined with shuttered shops. Their metal grilles are still down, but people move past them anyway, purposeful. A woman in a new silk saree navigates a puddle with the careful precision of someone who paid too much for it. The pleats of her saree still hold the creases of the shop's fold. Men in fresh kurtas walk in clusters, their clothes too clean, too bright for this hour of the morning. You have stepped into the day itself.
Dhak drums sound from somewhere north, not close enough to hear clearly, but close enough to feel. The rhythm is tentative, warming up. Testing. The sound seems to come from several directions at once, bouncing between the cramped buildings. You notice how little sky you can see. The buildings lean in from both sides.
The smell shifts as you walk. There is incense, certainly, but underneath it something deeper. Wood smoke. Clarified butter. The specific sharpness of marigold flowers being handled, crushed slightly by the damp. A man cycles past with a stack of flower garlands balanced impossibly on his carrier. The orange blooms tremble with each small pothole.
More people emerge from the side lanes. A tightness gathers, though the street is not crowded yet. Just the promise of it. The promise is in the way people move. Everyone is walking toward something. The air is already thick enough to feel like a presence, and it is not yet seven in the morning.
A string of small lights has been hung between buildings ahead, still glowing pale yellow in the dawn. Someone's loudspeaker crackles to life deeper in the neighborhood. The voice is tinny and distant, offering something in Bengali that you cannot quite catch. The dhak drums answer, a little louder now. A little more sure.
The puddles at your feet reflect the pale sky and the yellow glow of lights not yet switched off. A child splashes through one deliberately, dragging an older woman behind him by her hand. She lets him.
