Settle the platform set from the market and the time window from the question — a snapshot is now, a brief is the last seven days, monitoring is since the previous run. Where the user named a category, expand it into the terms people actually use on each platform, in the platform's language: hashtags, slang, product names, and the competitor and adjacent terms that co-occur with it.
Every platform pull stands alone; fan out.
Keep every item as the platform returned it: rank, title, the platform's own heat metric, category label, and the time of capture. Platforms score heat differently; a rank is comparable within a platform and across time, never across platforms.
When a category was given, run these alongside step 2:
Merge what came back into trends. The same story appears under different words on different platforms — a Weibo hot search, a Douyin topic and a Reddit thread about one event are one trend with three platforms of evidence. For each cluster record: the platforms it appears on, rank per platform, first seen, current direction, and the posts that carry it.
Two evidence standards apply. A hot-list entry is already an aggregate the platform computed over its own traffic — one entry is evidence. A trend assembled from search results is not: it needs several posts from more than one author, or presence on more than one platform, before it is called a trend rather than an example.
Label momentum from the data, not from the wording: rising when an item is on a rising list, climbing in a timeline, or new since the previous run; peaking when it tops an overall list; fading when it has dropped in rank or off a list it was on.
Separate what is trending from what matters to the user. Platform-wide entertainment and news items dominate every hot list; in category mode, keep them only when they touch the category. For the trends that remain, note what kind of thing each is — an event, a format, a sound, a meme, a product, a controversy — since that decides whether there is anything to do about it and how long it will last.
The middle column is a search query, not a provider name — search the catalog rather than assume what it offers.
| Dimension | What to pull | Search the catalog for | Confirm in inspect |
|---|---|---|---|
| Hot lists — China | Douyin hot search, topics, videos; Weibo hot search; Xiaohongshu, Bilibili, Kuaishou, Zhihu hot lists | douyin hot search list, weibo hot search, bilibili hot search, kuaishou hot list, zhihu hot list | whether a board or category parameter narrows the list; whether an empty result is charged |
| Hot lists — global | TikTok trending feed and trending searches, YouTube trending, Instagram trending reels, X trending, Reddit popular and trending searches | tiktok trending feed, youtube trending videos, instagram trending reels, twitter trending, reddit popular feed | the region parameter and whether it is required; which region codes are accepted |
| Rising lists | the platform's fast-climbing list, separate from its overall list | douyin rising hot list, hot search rising, topic list rising popularity | that it is a distinct list and not a re-sort of the overall one |
| Hot-list history | when an item entered and how its rank moved | hot ranking timeline, hot search history | the window covered; whether a specific item can be looked up or only the whole timeline |
| Trending hashtags, sounds, challenges | video-platform creative trends with usage counts | tiktok trending hashtags, douyin hot music, hot challenge list, trending sounds | region parameter; whether counts are provided or only rank |
| Platform search | posts matching the category terms, with engagement, author, date | tiktok search keyword, douyin search video, xiaohongshu search notes, reddit search posts, youtube search, instagram hashtag search | sort options — by engagement or by date; date filters; page size; whether results are region-scoped |
| Search interest | interest over time for a term, by region | google trends explore, keyword interest over time | the date range format; how many terms one call compares |
| Post detail | metrics and text for a specific post carrying a trend | tiktok video details, douyin video detail, reddit post details | per-post pricing; whether comments come with it or cost extra |
One brief per run. Keep the section order fixed so consecutive runs read side by side. Every item carries its platform, rank or metric, and capture time; ranks are never compared across platforms.
