Openclaw Semantic Memory

Security checks for vulnerabilities and agentic risk

Overview

This is a coherent semantic memory skill, but it stores and recalls private conversation memory in ways that need careful review before installation.

Review this skill before installing in any shared, sensitive, or regulated environment. Use it only if you are comfortable with memories being saved as plaintext under the configured storage path, being automatically recalled into future prompts, and potentially being sent to a configured Qdrant server. Prefer disabling autoRecall or persistence if you do not need them, avoid enabling autoCapture or allowPIICapture unless you explicitly want conversation content retained, and validate collectionName/storagePath values before use.

Vulnerability Patterns
  • Agent Memory PoisoningWrites attacker-controlled rules into memory that affect later sessions
  • Insecure Skill Coding PracticesFinds exploitable flaws such as hardcoded secrets or command injection
  • Skill Instruction HijackingAlters the agent's session goals or safety constraints when the skill loads
  • Remote Payload Retrieval and ExecutionFetches external code whose behavior can change after review

The `escapeMemoryForPrompt` function does not perform structural escaping or establish a trusted-data boundary; it only adds a textual prefix and truncates the value. Similarly, the instruction telling the model not to execute stored instructions is only natural-language guidance. It does not prevent a language model from interpreting a malicious stored memory as an instruction, especially when the malicious content contains persuasive priority claims, delimiter manipulation, or directions to disregard surrounding context. Finding

protobufjs 6.11.4 is identified with multiple serious advisories including denial of service via crafted protobuf structures and potential code-generation-related injection issues. Even if the skill does not intentionally expose protobuf compilation features, carrying a critically vulnerable parser/generator library increases risk if untrusted model files, schemas, or protobuf payloads can be introduced through dependencies or local content processing.

Finding

The skill is presented as 'fully local' semantic memory, but the documented behavior includes external Qdrant connectivity, persistent disk storage, automatic conversation capture, optional PII capture, and prompt-context injection. This mismatch can mislead users and operators about where data goes and how aggressively conversation content is retained or reused, creating privacy and trust risks even if the features are configurable and partly disclosed later in the file.

Confidence
95% confidence
Finding

The manifest description says the skill provides 'fully local' semantic memory, which implies local storage and retrieval without remote services. However, the top-level dependency on '@qdrant/js-client-rest' indicates the implementation is built around an HTTP REST client for Qdrant, which is inconsistent with a purely local-only design claim.

Confidence
90% confidence
Finding

sharp 0.32.6 pulls in vulnerable native image-processing components via libvips/libheif advisories, which can make crafted image inputs dangerous. In a semantic-memory skill this is somewhat context-dependent, but Transformers/image tooling may still process user-supplied images or model assets, so malformed media could trigger crashes or worse in native code.

Known Vulnerable Dependency: undici==6.23.0 — 12 advisory(ies): CVE-2026-1525 (Undici has an HTTP Request/Response Smuggling issue); CVE-2026-6733 (undici vulnerable to HTTP response queue poisoning via keep-alive socket reuse); CVE-2026-1527 (Undici has CRLF Injection in undici via `upgrade` option) +9 more

High
Category
Supply Chain
Confidence
93% confidence
Finding

undici 6.23.0 is flagged for multiple HTTP parsing and smuggling-related issues, which are relevant anywhere the package makes outbound or inbound HTTP requests. This skill includes a REST client dependency (@qdrant/js-client-rest), so if configured to talk to a Qdrant server or other services, these flaws could enable request smuggling, response poisoning, or header injection in hostile network conditions.

Missing User Warnings

Medium
Category
Not specified by scanner
Confidence
90% confidence
Finding

The changelog advertises automatic conversation recording and automatic memory injection, but does not pair those capabilities with a clear privacy warning or prominent consent language. In a memory plugin, these features can cause users to unknowingly retain sensitive prompts, personal data, or prior conversation content and resurface it later into unrelated contexts.

Confidence

Finding

The manifest says the skill provides 'fully local' semantic memory, which implies storage and retrieval remain on the local machine. This changelog explicitly states support for an external Qdrant server, which introduces a non-local backend and materially broadens the described behavior.

Natural-Language Policy Violations

Medium

Not specified by scanner
Confidence
97% confidence
Finding

The file’s user-facing instructions and descriptions are consistently presented in Chinese, and there is no indication that users may choose another language or that the skill is intended only for a Chinese-speaking or region-specific audience. This creates a natural-language policy concern because it forces a specific language without user opt-in.

Intent-Code Divergence

Medium
Category
Not specified by scanner
Confidence
98% confidence
Finding

The README earlier states that the skill provides disk persistence by default and documents persistToDisk behavior and storage paths. However, the FAQ at L244-L246 says that in memory mode data is only saved during process runtime and that persistent storage will be supported in a future version, which directly conflicts with the documented current behavior.

Description-Behavior Mismatch

Medium
Category
Not specified by scanner
Confidence
97% confidence
Finding

The skill advertises itself as fully local, but the implementation accepts an arbitrary Qdrant URL and will connect to a non-local server if configured. That creates a trust-boundary mismatch: stored embeddings and user memory payloads may be sent off-host, which can mislead users into exposing sensitive conversation data under the assumption that it never leaves the machine.

Natural-Language Policy Violations

Medium
Category
Not specified by scanner
Confidence
91% confidence
Finding

User-facing descriptions, prompts, and messages throughout the skill are written only in Chinese, which effectively constrains the skill's interaction language without offering a choice. The file does not document that the skill is intentionally Chinese-only or provide any user opt-in for the locale restriction.

Ssd 3

Medium
Category

Confidence
87% confidence
Finding

Search and recall return previously stored memory text in plaintext to outputs, which can resurface sensitive historical content to the model, logs, CLI, or any user/session with access to the tool. In a semantic-memory skill, this is contextually significant because the feature is explicitly designed to retrieve private conversational data, so weak access controls or broad invocation can turn the memory store into a disclosure channel.

Missing User Warnings

Medium
Category
Not specified by scanner
Confidence
87% confidence
Finding

The memory_forget tool deletes memories immediately when a memoryId is provided, and can also auto-delete a high-confidence search match, but there is no confirmation step before this irreversible action. The description says only '删除特定记忆' and does not warn that deletion is immediate.

Missing User Warnings

Medium
Category
Not specified by scanner
Confidence
94% confidence
Finding

The plugin can automatically persist user messages to memory, including disk persistence and optional remote Qdrant storage, without a clear interactive warning or confirmation at capture time. In a memory skill handling conversation content, silent persistence materially raises privacy risk because users may reveal personal data assuming ephemeral handling.

Ssd 3

Medium
Category
Not specified by scanner
Confidence
95% confidence
Finding

The auto-capture path stores raw user text in long-term memory and can be configured to retain PII and write it to disk. Even though there is a basic PII check, it is narrow and optional to bypass, so the system can accumulate sensitive personal content that may later be exposed, mishandled, or transferred if remote Qdrant is enabled.

Autonomous Decision Making

Excessive Agency
Confidence

Finding

Skill enables autonomous high-impact decisions without human-in-the-loop verification. Critical operations (destructive commands, financial transactions, data deletion) should require explicit user confirmation.

Description-Behavior Mismatch

Medium
Category
Not specified by scanner
Confidence
88% confidence
Finding

The skill description says memory is 'fully local, no API keys', which implies local-only storage and retrieval. Including @qdrant/js-client-rest indicates the implementation is designed to communicate with a Qdrant server over REST, which is inconsistent with a strictly local-only description unless clearly constrained to a local service.

Natural-Language Policy Violations

Medium
Category
Not specified by scanner
Confidence
97% confidence
Finding

This JavaScript file contains user-facing comments, test names, and console output entirely in Chinese, including status and failure messages shown at runtime. Because the file does not provide any user opt-in or alternative locale, it violates the language/locale policy for natural-language content in code files.

Intent-Code Divergence

Low
Category
Not specified by scanner
Confidence
86% confidence
Finding

The top-level comment presents the module as an 'OpenClaw Memory (Qdrant) Plugin' and 'local semantic memory system using Qdrant vector database', but the implementation includes an in-memory fallback with optional disk persistence and separately initializes a Transformers.js embedding pipeline. This documentation is not merely incomplete; it actively frames the storage architecture around Qdrant even though substantial code paths do not use Qdrant at all.

Context-Inappropriate Capability

Low
Category
Not specified by scanner
Confidence
87% confidence
Finding

When autoCapture is enabled, the plugin scans all user messages after agent completion and stores matching content without explicit per-item consent. This is broader than a manual memory tool and increases the chance that sensitive or unintended content is retained long-term, especially because the trigger rules are heuristic and may capture more than users expect.

Known Vulnerable Dependency: @protobufjs/utf8==1.1.0 — 1 advisory(ies): CVE-2026-44288 (protobufjs has overlong UTF-8 decoding)

Low
Category
Supply Chain
Confidence
88% confidence
Finding

@protobufjs/utf8 1.1.0 is flagged with an overlong UTF-8 decoding advisory, which can permit malformed input to be accepted in ways downstream code does not expect. In this skill it appears only as a transitive dependency of protobufjs, so exploitability depends on whether attacker-controlled protobuf data is parsed, but it is still a genuine supply-chain weakness.
