yaps-translation

Security checks for vulnerabilities and agentic risk

Overview

The skill looks like a real Yaps integration, but it includes media transcription, meeting-project creation, and broad Yaps CLI passthrough beyond the advertised translation-only purpose.

Review this before installing if you only wanted a narrow translation helper. It should use the local Yaps app and preserve source files, but it can also drive other Yaps CLI operations and create media-derived artifacts or Yaps projects. Install only if you are comfortable with a local agent invoking Yaps on selected files and with Yaps retaining its normal local app history/project state.

Vulnerability Patterns
  • Skill Instruction HijackingAlters the agent's session goals or safety constraints when the skill loads
  • Agent Memory PoisoningWrites attacker-controlled rules into memory that affect later sessions
  • Remote Payload Retrieval and ExecutionFetches external code whose behavior can change after review
  • Embedded Malicious CodeShips malicious scripts inside the skill and executes them locally
  • Unauthorized Access and Privilege EscalationObtains permissions beyond the task's legitimate needs
Vulnerability Patterns
  • Privilege EscalationExcessive Permissions, Sudo/Root Execution, Credential Access
  • Excessive AgencyUnrestricted Tool Access, Autonomous Decision Making, Scope Creep
  • Rogue AgentSelf-Modification, Session Persistence
  • MCP Least PrivilegeUnderdeclared Capability, Wildcard Permission, Missing Permission Declaration
  • MCP Tool PoisoningHidden Instructions, Unicode Deception, Parameter Description Injection

Finding
Code accesses credential files (SSH keys, AWS credentials, etc.). This could indicate credential theft attempts.

Lp3

Medium
Category
MCP Least Privilege
Confidence
70% confidence
Finding
Without declared permissions the skill's intent is opaque and cannot be validated.

Description-Behavior Mismatch

Medium
Confidence
97% confidence
Finding
The implementation exposes transcription and meeting-processing workflows over audio/video files, which materially exceeds the declared skill purpose of translating text or subtitle files. Capability drift like this is dangerous because hosts and users may grant access expecting a narrow translation tool, while the skill can instead ingest richer local media and create additional artifacts or projects.

Context-Inappropriate Capability

Medium
Confidence
93% confidence
Finding
The code can create meeting transcripts/projects and return project/audio paths, which is unrelated to the stated translation purpose and may persist sensitive local media-derived data. In a skill advertised for translation, this increases the risk of surprising collection, retention, and disclosure of user content beyond what the user reasonably consented to.

Description-Behavior Mismatch

Medium
Confidence
98% confidence
Finding
The adapter allows near-arbitrary Yaps CLI passthrough, so callers are not confined to the advertised translation use case. This broadens the effective authority of the skill to whatever the installed Yaps CLI supports, undermining least privilege and creating a mismatch between declared behavior and actual executable capability.

// Fixed WMI filter: never interpolate a discovered path into this command.
Confidence
75% confidence
Finding
Skill establishes unauthorized persistence across sessions via cron jobs, startup scripts, or state files. Session persistence allows an attacker to maintain access beyond the current interaction.

Context-Inappropriate Capability

Medium
Confidence
84% confidence
Finding
The manifest describes a translation skill for text or subtitle files, but this module enumerates running processes via PowerShell, probes local Yaps executables, and later launches the desktop app for account recovery. While using a local translator binary is expected, process enumeration and app-launch orchestration are broader host-control capabilities not justified by the narrow user-facing translation description.

Intent-Code Divergence

Low
Confidence
82% confidence
Finding
The top-level comment says the adapter writes no diagnostics, credentials, settings, or host permissions. Later code clearly performs filesystem writes for generated outputs and temporary staging files, so the documentation overstates the absence of writes and can mislead reviewers about adapter side effects.

Context-Inappropriate Capability

Low
Confidence
79% confidence
Finding
This code inspects macOS app bundles, Windows file version metadata, and Linux package managers such as dpkg-query and rpm to determine installed Yaps versions. That host-inspection capability goes beyond the manifest's stated purpose of translating text or subtitle files and is not disclosed there.
