Security audit

yaps-auto-captions

Security checks for vulnerabilities and agentic risk

Overview

The skill is mostly aligned with adding Yaps captions, but its bundled runtime can run broader Yaps commands and create meeting projects outside the advertised caption workflow.

Review this before installing if you expected a captions-only helper. It relies on your local Yaps desktop account and can run more than caption commands through its adapter, so only use it if you trust the publisher and are comfortable with Yaps projects and related local outputs being created during requested work.

Vulnerability Patterns
  • Skill Instruction HijackingAlters the agent's session goals or safety constraints when the skill loads
  • Agent Memory PoisoningWrites attacker-controlled rules into memory that affect later sessions
  • Remote Payload Retrieval and ExecutionFetches external code whose behavior can change after review
  • Embedded Malicious CodeShips malicious scripts inside the skill and executes them locally
  • Unauthorized Access and Privilege EscalationObtains permissions beyond the task's legitimate needs
Vulnerability Patterns
  • Privilege EscalationExcessive Permissions, Sudo/Root Execution, Credential Access
  • Excessive AgencyUnrestricted Tool Access, Autonomous Decision Making, Scope Creep
  • Rogue AgentSelf-Modification, Session Persistence
  • MCP Least PrivilegeUnderdeclared Capability, Wildcard Permission, Missing Permission Declaration
  • MCP Tool PoisoningHidden Instructions, Unicode Deception, Parameter Description Injection

Context-Inappropriate Capability

High
Confidence
97% confidence
Finding
The main entrypoint accepts and forwards arbitrary Yaps CLI arguments when `argv[0]` is not one of the adapter verbs, and `requestMode` also accepts a JSON array that is passed to `runYaps`. Even though spawning uses `shell: false` and some auth handling is guarded, this still turns a narrowly described captioning skill into a general-purpose wrapper around the installed Yaps CLI, enabling operations unrelated to captions, including actions that may access or create additional local data.

  };
}
Confidence
70% confidence
Finding
Code accesses credential files (SSH keys, AWS credentials, etc.). This could indicate credential theft attempts.

Lp3

Medium
Category
MCP Least Privilege
Confidence
70% confidence
Finding
Without declared permissions the skill's intent is opaque and cannot be validated.

Intent-Code Divergence

Medium
Confidence
88% confidence
Finding
The comment states, "This adapter writes no diagnostics, credentials, settings, or host permissions." However, later code writes exported transcript/subtitle files and temporary files/directories on the host via `mkdtemp`, `writeFile`, and `link`. The documentation therefore overstates the absence of host-side writes.

Description-Behavior Mismatch

Medium
Confidence
92% confidence
Finding
The adapter exposes a `meeting-file` workflow that can extract audio from videos, invoke Yaps meeting transcription, and return identifiers and paths for created meeting projects. This exceeds the stated skill scope of adding captions to a video and broadens the accessible functionality to create persistent transcription artifacts on the host, increasing unintended data exposure and capability surface.

// Fixed WMI filter: never interpolate a discovered path into this command.
Confidence
75% confidence
Finding
Skill establishes unauthorized persistence across sessions via cron jobs, startup scripts, or state files. Session persistence allows an attacker to maintain access beyond the current interaction.
