OpenClaw Memory System

Security checks for vulnerabilities and agentic risk

Overview

This memory skill needs Review because it persistently captures and injects conversation data while exposing under-scoped memory APIs, default external embedding transmission, and agent-directed crypto payment flows.

Install only after review if you are comfortable with automatic cross-session memory capture, external embedding calls unless local mode is explicitly selected, an unauthenticated dashboard API, and x402 payment code. Do not give an agent a funded wallet for this skill without explicit human approval, spending limits, and recipient allowlisting.

Vulnerability Patterns
  • Skill Instruction HijackingAlters the agent's session goals or safety constraints when the skill loads
  • Agent Memory PoisoningWrites attacker-controlled rules into memory that affect later sessions
  • Unauthorized Access and Privilege EscalationObtains permissions beyond the task's legitimate needs
  • Insecure Skill Coding PracticesFinds exploitable flaws such as hardcoded secrets or command injection
  • Remote Payload Retrieval and ExecutionFetches external code whose behavior can change after review

It explicitly promotes operation with “No human approval needed” and “No human in the loop.” These are not merely API reference materials: they provide decision criteria and executable logic that cause an agent with wallet capabilities to request a vendor-controlled re ...[truncated 1248 chars]

Automatic Hooks Log Sensitive Prompt and Response Content

'…' : ''}` : 'empty', responsePreview: agentResponse ? `${agentResponse.slice(0, 80)}${agentResponse.length > 80 ? '…' : ''}` : 'empty' }); ``` ### Technical Analysis The hooks write the first 80 characters of inbound messages and agent responses to standard output without secret or personal-data redaction. The `request-after` hook performs this logging before checking whether `agentWallet` is present, so even interactions later rejected from memory processing are logged. The beginning of a prompt frequently contains high-value information such as API keys, bearer tokens, internal hostnames, names, email addresses, or copied error messages containing credentials. Process output may be collected by service managers, container runtimes, CI systems, centralized logging platforms, or terminal history with broader access and longer retention than the memory database. ### Attack Path 1. A user places sensitive content near the beginning of a message or response. 2. The automatic hook runs during message preprocessing or after request completion. 3. The first 80 characters are written to process logs. 4. A local user, administrator, logging service, or compromised log collector reads the sensitive preview. ### Impact Assessm ...[truncated 260 chars]

Finding

protobufjs 6.11.4 is listed with multiple serious advisories, including denial of service and code-generation/code-injection issues. However, in this lockfile it is only present in an optional transitive branch under the transformers/onnx stack, so exploitability depends on whether that optional feature is installed and whether the skill handles attacker-controlled protobuf models or invokes protobuf code generation; absent that, the risk is materially reduced but still real.

Confidence
99% confidence
Finding

The documentation directly instructs autonomous agents to upgrade by sending blockchain-style payments from their wallets, despite the skill's stated purpose being memory persistence. In skill ecosystems, such instructions can act as prompt-level inducements for fund transfers, making this especially risky because payment authority is materially different from memory management.

Tool Parameter Abuse

Category
Tool Misuse
Confidence
80% confidence
Finding

A parameterized DELETE endpoint for memory IDs is a plausible abuse point because state-changing operations on stored memories can be targeted through manipulated identifiers, especially if authorization and input validation are weak. In a long-term memory skill, unauthorized deletion can materially affect agent behavior, erase evidence, or sabotage persistent context.

Intent-Code Divergence

The summary explicitly states that transaction hashes are simply trusted for MVP instead of being verified on-chain, yet licenses are granted based on that flow. This allows an attacker to submit arbitrary or replayed transaction identifiers and potentially obtain Pro-tier access without making a real payment.

Intent-Code Divergence

High

Confidence

Finding

The README makes a strong privacy claim that all data is stored locally and nothing is sent to external servers, yet the documented default embedding option is OpenAI. Because embeddings are generated from memory content derived from user conversations, this creates a material contradiction that can mislead users into exposing sensitive data off-device without informed consent.

Context Leakage

High
Category
Data Exfiltration
Confidence
85% confidence
Finding

The hook logs session metadata including the full sessionId and a partial agent wallet identifier to stdout. In many agent or hosted environments, logs are centralized, retained, and accessible to operators or other systems, so this can expose cross-session identifiers and usage details that aid correlation of user activity or leak sensitive operational context. The skill’s purpose is long-term memory across sessions, which increases sensitivity because persistent identity and memory usage data are directly tied to user profiling.

Finding

sharp 0.32.6 is flagged due to inherited image/media parsing vulnerabilities in native libraries. In this skill, sharp is only part of the optional transformers dependency path, so it becomes dangerous primarily if optional model/image-processing features are installed and exposed to untrusted images or media; otherwise it is dormant attack surface.

Memory Manipulation

Memory Poisoning
Confidence
95% confidence
Finding

This skill exposes direct memory manipulation through a delete operation in a component whose purpose is persistent cross-session memory. Because memory is the core trust anchor for agent behavior and user context, unsafe deletion is more dangerous here than in ordinary CRUD tooling: it can erase user preferences, historical facts, or behavioral constraints and degrade or alter future agent decisions.

Finding

The delete-memory operation is exposed through a simple route parameter and query parameter pair with no visible authentication, authorization, or ownership verification in this file. In a long-term memory skill, this is especially dangerous because an attacker who can reach the endpoint may delete persisted user/agent context, causing confidentiality/integrity loss and potentially steering future agent behavior by selectively erasing memories.
