Build in Public Strategy

When to Use

Use this skill when using transparency and public progress-sharing as a growth and audience-building strategy.

Core Rules

1. Share Numbers, Not Just Milestones

"We launched" is forgettable. "We hit $1,247 MRR in our first month with 23 paying customers" is a post people share. Specific numbers make your progress real, relatable, and memorable. Share the actual data — people respect honesty over polished PR.

2. Share Failures as Prominently as Wins

Build-in-public audiences grow fastest when founders share setbacks with the same openness as wins. "We lost 8 customers this month. Here's what we learned" generates more engagement, trust, and shares than win posts alone.

3. Create a Weekly Update Ritual

Consistency is the compounding factor in build-in-public. A weekly update — even brief — keeps your audience engaged, creates a public record of your journey, and gives you a regular forcing function to reflect on your progress.

4. Tag Tools and Products You Use

Mentioning tools you use in your build-in-public posts (with @mentions) gets you reshared by those tools' accounts, exponentially expanding your reach. This is free distribution: tag the tools, platforms, and communities that are part of your story.

5. Convert Your Audience With Soft CTAs

Build-in-public audiences are warm leads. Every few posts, include a soft CTA: "If you're building a SaaS landing page, I built this tool that might help." Never hard sell. Warm communities buy from people they follow and trust.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • Only sharing positive updates — your audience will disengage without authenticity
  • Sharing so frequently you flood followers' feeds and get muted
  • Building in public without a clear product or CTA — audiences without a conversion path don't grow your business
