Security audit

Tavily

Security checks for vulnerabilities and agentic risk

Overview

This skill is a disclosed Tavily search helper that sends user-provided search queries to Tavily using a Tavily API key, with no hidden persistence or unrelated local access found.

Install only if you intend to use Tavily and are comfortable sending search queries and your Tavily API key to Tavily's API. Avoid putting sensitive private data in search queries, and keep TAVILY_API_KEY scoped to this use where your environment supports that.

Vulnerability Patterns
  • Skill Instruction HijackingAlters the agent's session goals or safety constraints when the skill loads
  • Agent Memory PoisoningWrites attacker-controlled rules into memory that affect later sessions
  • Remote Payload Retrieval and ExecutionFetches external code whose behavior can change after review
  • Embedded Malicious CodeShips malicious scripts inside the skill and executes them locally
  • Unauthorized Access and Privilege EscalationObtains permissions beyond the task's legitimate needs
Vulnerability Patterns
  • Data ExfiltrationExternal Transmission, Env Variable Harvesting, File System Enumeration
  • MCP Least PrivilegeUnderdeclared Capability, Wildcard Permission, Missing Permission Declaration
  • Prompt InjectionInstruction Override, Hidden Instructions, Exfiltration Commands
  • Privilege EscalationExcessive Permissions, Sudo/Root Execution, Credential Access
  • Supply ChainUnpinned Dependencies, External Script Fetching, Obfuscated Code

Undeclared Tool Scope

Medium
Category
MCP Least Privilege
Confidence
90% confidence
Finding

The skill explicitly requires an environment secret (TAVILY_API_KEY) and instructs use of a bundled CLI that performs outbound web requests, but it does not declare any permissions or allowed-tools scope. That creates an authorization gap where the skill's actual capabilities are broader than its declared contract, reducing visibility and policy enforcement around network and secret use.
