Prompt Shield Publish

Security checks for vulnerabilities and agentic risk

Overview

This is a coherent local prompt-scanning firewall, but its persistent Claude hook and weak whitelist approval model need review before installation.

Install only after reviewing the hook script and understanding that adding it to ~/.claude/settings.json makes it run on future Claude Code inputs. Use an isolated environment with a pinned PyYAML version, fix the hook stdout leak, and do not rely on the whitelist peer-review feature as a strong security boundary unless approver identity is authenticated.

Whitelist Peer Review Can Be Bypassed Using Unauthenticated Approver Names

It prevents only identical names, case-insensitive duplicate names, and a name matching the proposer. Claude Code Hook Emits Untrusted Prompt Content Before Classification

Content
View full analysis
/dev/null; then MESSAGE=$(echo "$INPUT" | python3 -c "import json, sys; d=json.load(sys.stdin); print(d.get('message',''))") else MESSAGE="$INPUT" fi ``` ### Technical Analysis The Python command used as the `if` condition both validates the JSON and prints its `message` value to standard output. Shell condition execution does not suppress stdout. Therefore, for every valid JSON hook request, the untrusted message is emitted before `shield.py` scans it and before the hook decides whether to allow or block it. The same JSON is then parsed a second time to populate `MESSAGE`. This duplication is unnecessary and creates the disclosure. A security filter must avoid forwarding or displaying protected content until after classification. The shell quoting prevents direct command substitution from the message, so this is not a shell command-injection finding. The risk is that blocked prompt-injection content is exposed through the hook output channel and may be logged, displayed, or consumed downstream. ### Attack Path 1. An attacker submits a valid JSON hook payload whose `message` field contains a prompt injection or sensitive content. 2. The first Python invocation successfully parses the JSON. 3. As part of the condition, it prints the raw `message` value to stdout. 4. The hook subsequently scans the same message and may classify it as `BLOCK`. 5. Despite the rejection, the original content has already reached the hook output stream and any associated logs or downstream consumers. ### Impact Assessment This issue does not grant filesystem, network, or operating-system privileges. /dev/null); then : else MESSAGE="$INPUT" fi ``` Additionally: 1. Keep all untrusted content out of stdout and stderr until the scan decision is complete. 2. Prefer a single Python helper that parses the hook envelope, performs the scan, and emits only a structured decision. 3. Confirm the exact Claude Code hook protocol and return only protocol-approved output. 4. Add integration tests asserting that blocked prompt text never appears in stdout, stderr, or logs. 5. Consider size limits for hook input to reduce resource-exhaustion risk. ]]>

Finding

The description is partially aligned: the code does scan text for prompt-injection-related patterns, supports sanitization, and implements a tamper-evident whitelist with approvals. However, several declared claims are not accurately represented by the supplied code chunk. Most clearly, 'zero dependencies' is contradicted by the explicit PyYAML import requirement. 'Claude Code hook integration' is not present in the code shown; it is only a standalone command-line tool. In addition, the actual behavior extends beyond prompt-injection defense into spam/moderation scoring via duplicate-count and karma heuristics and categories like crypto/link spam and fake engagement. Finally, the exact claim of 113 patterns and 14 categories cannot be validated from this chunk because detection definitions live in an external YAML file not provided. These are material description-to-behavior mismatches.

Agent Config Directory Access

High
Category
Agent Snooping
Confidence
93% confidence
Finding

The skill instructs users to modify ~/.claude/settings.json to install a submit hook, which targets a sensitive agent configuration file in the user's home directory. Even if intended for legitimate integration, directing configuration changes that execute a local script on every user input creates a powerful persistence and interception point; if the referenced script or skill content is altered, it could monitor, block, or manipulate all future prompts.

Undeclared Tool Scope

Medium
Category
MCP Least Privilege
Confidence
88% confidence
Finding

The skill advertises executable components and operational behavior but does not declare any tool scope or permission boundaries, despite static detection of file read/write capability. In an agent environment, missing scope declarations can cause the skill to run with broader ambient privileges than users or orchestrators expect, increasing the chance of unauthorized filesystem access or unsafe automation.

Natural-Language Policy Violations

Medium
Category

Confidence
97% confidence
Finding

This Python skill presents its description, usage text, errors, recommendations, and console messages in German, indicating a fixed locale for user interaction. The file does not provide any user-selectable language/locale option or document a justified region-specific constraint, which conflicts with the policy against forcing a specific language without opt-in.

Description-Behavior Mismatch

Medium

Confidence

Finding

The manifest emphasizes prompt-injection detection patterns and threat categories, but this code adds behavioral moderation heuristics based on duplicate counts and karma/upvotes. That shifts the tool toward spam/reputation scoring rather than strictly analyzing prompt content for injection attacks.

Description-Behavior Mismatch

Low
Category

Confidence

Finding

The manifest description at L003 explicitly advertises 'zero dependencies', but the same file later states 'Dependencies: PyYAML (pip install pyyaml)' at L019. This is a direct mismatch between the skill's claimed operational footprint and its documented implementation requirements.

Natural-Language Policy Violations

Low
Category
Not specified by scanner
Confidence
88% confidence
Finding

This manifest-style YAML includes natural-language metadata and descriptions in German such as "Autor", "Datum", and multiple German pattern descriptions. Because the file does not document that it is intentionally German-only or region-specific, it may violate language/locale policy by forcing a specific language without user choice.

Description-Behavior Mismatch

Low
Category
Not specified by scanner
Confidence
83% confidence
Finding

The manifest describes a protective scanning firewall, and mentions whitelist and peer review, but this file goes beyond runtime detection by providing stateful management features that write YAML and log files. Those write operations are functional behavior, not just passive scanning, so the skill does more than a narrow 'scan/block input' implementation.
