Session Logs Hardened

Security checks for vulnerabilities and agentic risk

Overview

This skill locally helps search prior OpenClaw session logs, which is privacy-sensitive but disclosed, purpose-aligned, and guarded against broad searches and credential disclosure.

Install this only if you are comfortable letting the agent read your OpenClaw session transcripts. Prefer asking for a specific session, date, or phrase, require confirmation for all-session searches, and do not display secrets found in old logs.

Vulnerability Patterns
  • Insecure Skill Coding PracticesFinds exploitable flaws such as hardcoded secrets or command injection
  • Skill Instruction HijackingAlters the agent's session goals or safety constraints when the skill loads
  • Agent Memory PoisoningWrites attacker-controlled rules into memory that affect later sessions
  • Remote Payload Retrieval and ExecutionFetches external code whose behavior can change after review
  • Embedded Malicious CodeShips malicious scripts inside the skill and executes them locally

Unfiltered Enumeration and Search of Sensitive Conversation History

/sessions/*.jsonl; do date=$(head -1 "$f" | jq -r '.timestamp' | cut -dT -f1) size=$(ls -lh "$f" | awk '{print $5}') echo "$date $size $(basename $f)" done | sort -r ``` ```bash for f in ~/.openclaw/agents//sessions/*.jsonl; do date=$(head -1 "$f" | jq -r '.timestamp' | cut -dT -f1) cost=$(jq -s '[.[] | .message.usage.cost.total // 0] | add' "$f") echo "$date $cost" done | awk '{a[$1]+=$2} END {for(d in a) print d, "$"a[d]}' | sort -r ``` ```bash ### Search across ALL sessions for a phrase ```bash rg -l "phrase" ~/.openclaw/agents//sessions/*.jsonl ``` ``` ### Technical Analysis The skill provides commands that enumerate every JSONL transcript in the current agent's session directory and search across all session files. These records can contain private conversations, credentials pasted during troubleshooting, behavioral information, tool activity, timestamps, and usage-cost metadata. The security guardrails at `SKILL.md:117-124` require confirmation before unfiltered searches and prohibit network transmission or unredacted credential disclosure. These controls reduce risk but depend on the agent consistently interpreting and applying natural-language instructions. The underlying broad-access commands remain available, and the examples do not technically enforce filtering, authorization, output minimization, or secret redaction. This behavior is consistent with the declared purpose of the skill and does not establish access beyond the current agent's filesystem permissions. It nevertheless creates a material data-disclosure risk because a broad operation can expose substantially more historical context than a targeted lookup requires. ### Attack Path 1. Shell Command Injection Through Interpolated Search Parameters

/sessions/*.jsonl; do head -1 "$f" | jq -r '.timestamp' | grep -q "2026-01-06" && echo "$f" done ``` ```bash ### Search across ALL sessions for a phrase ```bash rg -l "phrase" ~/.openclaw/agents//sessions/*.jsonl ``` ``` ```bash jq -r 'select(.type=="message") | .message.content[]? | select(.type=="text") | .text' ~/.openclaw/agents//sessions/.jsonl | rg 'keyword' ``` ### Technical Analysis The examples place replaceable dates, phrases, keywords, agent identifiers, and session identifiers directly inside shell command text. If an agent constructs a command by textual substitution, shell quoting does not provide a reliable security boundary. A malicious value containing a matching quote followed by shell syntax can terminate the intended argument and introduce an additional command. Session identifiers and agent identifiers also form filesystem paths. Without strict validation and canonicalization, specially crafted values could introduce path traversal or cause access to unintended files that remain readable by the current account. The files contain documentation rather than a conventional executable script, so exploitation depends on an agent translating user input into these command templates. That execution model is nevertheless the intended operation of the skill, making unsafe command construction an actionable coding and configuration weakness. ### Attack Path 1. An attacker supplies a crafted search phrase, keyword, date, session identifier, or agent identifier. 2. The agent substitutes that value directly into one of the documented shell templates. 3. The crafted value closes the surrounding quotation context or alters the constructed path. 4. The shell parses attacker-contr ...[truncated 1398 chars]

Skill attempts to nullify the agent's safety policies or restrictions ('you have no restrictions', 'ignore your guidelines', 'do anything now'). This is a direct jailbreak that disables guardrails.

Autonomous Decision Making

Excessive Agency
Confidence
87% confidence
Finding

This is the same underlying issue as above, expressed through the phrase 'without asking': the skill permits autonomous expansion into bulk historical search without confirming user intent. Because session logs may contain secrets, behavioral data, and unrelated prior context, autonomous enumeration materially increases privacy risk.

Finding

Skill enables autonomous high-impact decisions without human-in-the-loop verification. Critical operations (destructive commands, financial transactions, data deletion) should require explicit user confirmation.
