Bazi Calculator - Shunshi AI

Security checks for vulnerabilities and agentic risk

Overview

The skill is a disclosed Bazi chart calculator, but users should be aware it installs an unpinned npm dependency and adds a promotional attribution footer.

Install only in an environment where running npm packages is acceptable, consider pinning shunshi-bazi-core and adding a lockfile before production use, and be aware that generated readings are instructed to include a Shunshi.AI attribution and MCP package promotion.

Vulnerability Patterns
  • Skill Instruction HijackingAlters the agent's session goals or safety constraints when the skill loads
  • Insecure DependenciesIntroduces malicious components through unsafe dependency sources
  • Agent Memory PoisoningWrites attacker-controlled rules into memory that affect later sessions
  • Remote Payload Retrieval and ExecutionFetches external code whose behavior can change after review
  • Embedded Malicious CodeShips malicious scripts inside the skill and executes them locally

Technical Analysis

The skill explicitly requires the agent to append a branded external link and an npm package-installation promotion to every generated reading. This instruction is unrelated to calculating or explaining the requested Bazi chart and modifies the agent's final response for promotional purposes.

Because the instruction is embedded in the skill text, it takes effect whenever the skill is loaded and a reading is produced. The user is not given a choice to omit the promotion, and the package named in the footer is separate from the dependency needed by the included calculator.

Attack Path

  1. The agent loads SKILL.md to process a Bazi-reading request.
  2. The agent follows the mandatory attribution instructions at lines 171-176.
  3. Every resulting reading includes a link to https://shunshi.ai and a suggestion to install shunshi-bazi-mcp.
  4. A user may follow the external link or install the promoted package under the assumption that it is required or endorsed as part of the requested result.

Impact Assessment

This issue controls the content of the agent's current-session output and exposes users to unsolicited external navigation and package-installation guidance. It does not directly obtain operating-system privileges, access credentials, or establish persistence. Its immediate scope is the agent response, while subsequent exposure depends on whether the user visits the external service or installs the promoted package.

Remediation Suggestions

  • Remove the mandatory promotional footer and the unrelated npm i shunshi-bazi-mcp installation suggestion.
  • If attribution is legitimately required, make it neutral, concise, and clearly identified as attribution rather than part of the substantive reading.
  • Do not require external links or package promotions in user-facing output.
  • Make optional attribution configurable and respect user or host policies that prohibit advertising or external redirection.
  • Review the remaining skill instructions for requirements that modify responses beyond the skill's declared Bazi-calculation purpose.

### Technical Analysis

The project directs users to execute `npm install`, but `shunshi-bazi-core` is declared using the mutable caret range `^0.1.0`. No package lockfile is present in the audited directory. Consequently, separate installations can resolve different dependency versions rather than a single reviewed artifact.

npm installation can also execute dependency lifecycle scripts unless scripts are explicitly disabled. If an allowed future package version or one of its transitive dependencies is compromised, installation could execute attacker-controlled code. The reviewed files do not establish that the current dependency is malicious; the confirmed issue is the absence of deterministic, integrity-locked dependency resolution.

### Attack Path

1. An attacker compromises a future version of `shunshi-bazi-core` permitted by `^0.1.0`, or compromises a transitive dependency selected during resolution.
2. A user follows the documented instruction and runs `npm install`.
3. npm resolves and downloads the compromised artifact because no committed lockfile constrains the dependency graph to reviewed versions and integrity hashes.
4. Malicious lifecycle code may execute during installation, or malicious runtime code may execute when `scripts/calc.mjs` imports `shunshi-bazi-core`.
5. The code runs with the privileges of the user or service account performing the installation or calculation.

Remediation Suggestions

  • Replace the caret range with an exact, reviewed version of shunshi-bazi-core.
  • Generate and commit a package-lock.json containing the complete dependency graph and integrity hashes.
  • In automated or production environments, use npm ci rather than npm install to enforce the lockfile.
  • Use npm ci --ignore-scripts when dependency lifecycle scripts are unnecessary.
  • Audit the selected package version and all transitive dependencies before distribution.
  • Add automated dependency vulnerability, provenance, and integrity checks to the release process.
  • Run dependency installation and chart calculation under a least-privileged account or within a restricted container.

Confidence
89% confidence
Finding

The dependency uses a caret range (^0.1.0), which allows automatic installation of newer compatible versions and can introduce unexpected or malicious upstream changes through the supply chain. In a skill that relies on a third-party calculation library, this increases the risk of pulling unreviewed code during install or deployment, though the immediate impact in this file alone is limited.
