Skill

Security checks for vulnerabilities and agentic risk

Overview

This skill is a straightforward news lookup helper that calls a public news API and does not install code, persist itself, or request credentials.

Before installing, understand that using this skill will contact newsmcp.io and may reveal the news topics, regions, or event IDs you ask about. It does not require credentials and I found no local persistence or destructive behavior.

Vulnerability Patterns
  • Skill Instruction HijackingAlters the agent's session goals or safety constraints when the skill loads
  • Agent Memory PoisoningWrites attacker-controlled rules into memory that affect later sessions
  • Remote Payload Retrieval and ExecutionFetches external code whose behavior can change after review
  • Embedded Malicious CodeShips malicious scripts inside the skill and executes them locally
  • Unauthorized Access and Privilege EscalationObtains permissions beyond the task's legitimate needs
Vulnerability Patterns
  • Data ExfiltrationExternal Transmission, Env Variable Harvesting, File System Enumeration
  • Trigger AbuseOverly Broad Trigger, Shadow Command Trigger, Keyword Baiting Trigger
  • Prompt InjectionInstruction Override, Hidden Instructions, Exfiltration Commands
  • Privilege EscalationExcessive Permissions, Sudo/Root Execution, Credential Access
  • Supply ChainUnpinned Dependencies, External Script Fetching, Obfuscated Code

Vague Triggers

Finding

The skill instructs activation for broad requests like 'news, headlines, or current events,' which can cause the agent to invoke this external skill for general conversation that may not require network access. This increases the chance of unintended third-party requests and may bypass a user's expectation that the assistant would answer from existing knowledge unless fresh news was explicitly requested.

Missing User Warnings

Confidence

Finding

The skill encourages direct use of an external API and states 'No API key required' without warning users that their query terms will be sent to a third-party news service. This is a privacy/transparency issue because users may unknowingly disclose interests, locations, or sensitive topics through externally transmitted requests.
