OpenClaw Update Checker

Security checks for vulnerabilities and agentic risk

Overview

This skill is a read-only OpenClaw version checker that reads expected local package metadata and queries the public npm registry without modifying the system.

Install this only if you are comfortable with the agent reading the global OpenClaw package.json location and contacting the public npm registry to compare versions. It should not install updates or change files based on the inspected artifacts.

Vulnerability Patterns
  • Skill Instruction HijackingAlters the agent's session goals or safety constraints when the skill loads
  • Agent Memory PoisoningWrites attacker-controlled rules into memory that affect later sessions
  • Remote Payload Retrieval and ExecutionFetches external code whose behavior can change after review
  • Embedded Malicious CodeShips malicious scripts inside the skill and executes them locally
  • Unauthorized Access and Privilege EscalationObtains permissions beyond the task's legitimate needs
Vulnerability Patterns
  • MCP Least PrivilegeUnderdeclared Capability, Wildcard Permission, Missing Permission Declaration
  • Prompt InjectionInstruction Override, Hidden Instructions, Exfiltration Commands
  • Data ExfiltrationExternal Transmission, Env Variable Harvesting, File System Enumeration
  • Privilege EscalationExcessive Permissions, Sudo/Root Execution, Credential Access
  • Supply ChainUnpinned Dependencies, External Script Fetching, Obfuscated Code

Finding
The skill describes capabilities that require file reads and outbound network access, but it does not declare an explicit tool scope such as permissions or allowed-tools. This creates a mismatch between the documented behavior and the enforcement boundary, which can lead to over-privileged execution or make reviewers and policy engines unable to constrain the skill appropriately.
