Tavily Search 1

Security checks for vulnerabilities and agentic risk

Overview

This is a straightforward Tavily web search and URL extraction skill that sends user-provided queries or URLs to Tavily.

Install this only if you are comfortable giving the skill access to your Tavily API key and sending your search queries or provided URLs to Tavily. Avoid submitting private, sensitive, or credential-bearing URLs unless that is acceptable for your Tavily account and data policy.

Vulnerability Patterns
  • Skill Instruction HijackingAlters the agent's session goals or safety constraints when the skill loads
  • Agent Memory PoisoningWrites attacker-controlled rules into memory that affect later sessions
  • Remote Payload Retrieval and ExecutionFetches external code whose behavior can change after review
  • Embedded Malicious CodeShips malicious scripts inside the skill and executes them locally
  • Unauthorized Access and Privilege EscalationObtains permissions beyond the task's legitimate needs
Vulnerability Patterns
  • Data ExfiltrationExternal Transmission, Env Variable Harvesting, File System Enumeration
  • MCP Least PrivilegeUnderdeclared Capability, Wildcard Permission, Missing Permission Declaration
  • MCP Tool PoisoningHidden Instructions, Unicode Deception, Parameter Description Injection
  • Prompt InjectionInstruction Override, Hidden Instructions, Exfiltration Commands
  • Privilege EscalationExcessive Permissions, Sudo/Root Execution, Credential Access

Undeclared Tool Scope

Medium
Category
MCP Least Privilege
Confidence
92% confidence
Finding

The skill invokes Node.js scripts that require environment access to TAVILY_API_KEY and make outbound network requests, but the manifest does not declare an explicit tool scope such as permissions or allowed-tools. This creates a least-privilege and transparency gap: an agent or reviewer cannot easily determine or constrain what capabilities the skill is expected to use, increasing the risk of unintended secret exposure or unreviewed network access.

Description-Behavior Mismatch

Medium
Category
Not specified by scanner
Confidence
95% confidence
Finding

The manifest describes an AI-optimized web search skill that returns concise, relevant search results, but this script calls Tavily's /extract endpoint with user-supplied URLs and retrieves raw page content. Extracting full content from provided URLs is a different capability from performing search, so the implemented behavior exceeds or diverges from the stated search-focused purpose.
