Security audit

EmailOctopus

Security checks for vulnerabilities and agentic risk

Overview

The skill is coherent for EmailOctopus work, but its fallback setup tells users to run remote installer scripts directly without verification.

Before installing, review the oo CLI installer through a trusted channel and prefer a signed or checksum-verified installation method. Use the skill only for intended EmailOctopus tasks, and confirm exact payloads before any contact creation, update, or deletion.

Vulnerability Patterns
  • Remote Payload Retrieval and ExecutionFetches external code whose behavior can change after review
  • Skill Instruction HijackingAlters the agent's session goals or safety constraints when the skill loads
  • Agent Memory PoisoningWrites attacker-controlled rules into memory that affect later sessions
  • Embedded Malicious CodeShips malicious scripts inside the skill and executes them locally
  • Unauthorized Access and Privilege EscalationObtains permissions beyond the task's legitimate needs

External Script Fetching

Supply Chain

Finding

The skill instructs the agent to install software using curl ... | bash, which downloads and immediately executes a remote script without integrity verification or pinning. If the remote host, transport, or script distribution path is compromised, this can lead to arbitrary code execution on the user's machine.

Finding

The skill description says to use this skill for "ANY EmailOctopus request" and "instead of calling the API directly," which is an overly broad trigger condition. That can cause the agent to invoke this skill in situations where a narrower, safer, or more context-appropriate tool should be selected, increasing the chance of unintended data access or state-changing operations in EmailOctopus.
