Security audit

competitive-intel

Security checks for vulnerabilities and agentic risk

Overview

The skill is coherent for live competitive research, but its setup tells users to pipe a mutable remote installer directly into Bash, which needs review before use.

Review this skill before installing. Use it only if you are comfortable with Bright Data receiving your search terms and target URLs, and do not run the pipe-to-bash installer as written; prefer a signed or package-managed install, or download and verify the installer before execution. Check where bdata stores login credentials and how to revoke or remove them.

Vulnerability Patterns
  • Remote Payload Retrieval and ExecutionFetches external code whose behavior can change after review
  • Skill Instruction HijackingAlters the agent's session goals or safety constraints when the skill loads
  • Agent Memory PoisoningWrites attacker-controlled rules into memory that affect later sessions
  • Embedded Malicious CodeShips malicious scripts inside the skill and executes them locally
  • Unauthorized Access and Privilege EscalationObtains permissions beyond the task's legitimate needs

Vulnerability Type: Remote payload retrieval and execution
Risk Level: High

Vulnerable Code

bash
curl -fsSL https://cli.brightdata.com/install.sh | bash

Technical Analysis

The prerequisite instructions retrieve a mutable shell script from an external URL and pipe it directly into Bash. The remote content is executed immediately without:

  • Pinning the installer to an immutable version
  • Verifying a cryptographic signature or checksum
  • Saving and inspecting the script before execution
  • Requesting explicit approval after showing the downloaded content
  • Constraining execution through a sandbox or reduced-privilege account

HTTPS provides transport protection but does not establish that every future script served by the endpoint is safe. If the publisher's hosting, release process, domain, DNS, certificate trust chain, or account is compromised, the reviewed Skill would execute the replacement payload without further validation.

Installing the Bright Data CLI is relevant to the Skill's live competitive-research functionality. However, executing mutable network content directly in a general-purpose shell is not the minimum-trust installation mechanism necessary for that functionality.

Attack Path

  1. An attacker compromises the remote installer endpoint or an upstream mechanism capable of changing its response.
  2. The attacker modifies install.sh to include arbitrary shell commands.
  3. A user or agent follows the prerequisite in SKILL.md.
  4. curl downloads the attacker-controlled response.
  5. The pipe sends the response directly to Bash without integrity verification or inspection.
  6. Bash executes the payload with the privileges and environment of the invoking account.
  7. The payload may access files, credentials, network resources, and processes available to that account, or install additional components.

Remediation Suggestions

  1. Prefer an official package manager or signed release artifact pinned to a specific version.
  2. Do not pipe downloaded content directly into a shell. Download it to a local file first.
  3. Verify the artifact using a publisher-provided cryptographic signature and a checksum obtained through a separately trusted channel.
  4. Display or inspect the installer before execution and require explicit user approval.
  5. Run installation as an unprivileged user unless a specific operation demonstrably requires elevated access.
  6. Document the installer's expected filesystem changes, network destinations, and permission requirements.
  7. Where supported, execute installation in a sandbox or isolated environment.
  8. Pin both the installer version and expected digest so later changes fail closed.

A safer conceptual workflow is:

bash
curl -fL --proto '=https' --tlsv1.2 \
  -o brightdata-install.sh \
  'https://cli.brightdata.com/path/to/versioned/install.sh'

printf '%s %s\n' 'PINNED_SHA256_DIGEST' 'brightdata-install.sh' \
  | sha256sum --check -

# Inspect the script and execute only after explicit approval.
bash brightdata-install.sh

The URL and digest must reference an official, immutable release and be independently verified before publication.

External Script Fetching

High
Category
Supply Chain
Confidence
98% confidence
Finding

The skill instructs users to install software by fetching a remote script and immediately piping it to the shell. This is dangerous because any compromise of the distribution endpoint, CDN, DNS, or TLS trust chain could result in arbitrary code execution on the user's machine with the user's privileges.

Chaining Abuse

High
Category
Tool Misuse
Confidence
99% confidence
Finding

The explicit use of command chaining into bash removes any opportunity for inspection before execution and turns a documentation example into a direct arbitrary-code execution primitive. In this skill's context, that risk is amplified because the instruction appears in prerequisites, making it likely users will run it before understanding the trust boundary.

Vague Triggers

Confidence
92% confidence
Finding

The skill activation criteria are broad enough to capture generic market-research or comparison requests, which can cause the agent to invoke a capability that performs live third-party scraping when the user may not expect external network access. This increases the chance of unnecessary data collection, privacy surprises, and overuse of a high-impact tool on loosely related prompts.

Missing User Warnings

Medium
Category
Not specified by scanner
Confidence
95% confidence
Finding

The skill strongly directs the agent to always gather live data first, but it does not prominently warn that this involves outbound requests to third-party services and web scraping of external sites. Users may unknowingly trigger network access, sending search terms and target URLs to Bright Data and scraped sites without informed consent.

Finding

As a markdown file, this should warn about behaviors that could affect user data or system integrity. The example shows -o competitor_data.json, which creates or overwrites a local file, but the surrounding text provides no caution about file persistence, overwrite risk, or handling collected data.
