Security audit

BirdWeather

Security checks for vulnerabilities and agentic risk

Overview

This skill is a straightforward BirdWeather lookup tool that discloses its public API use and does not show credential access, persistence, or unrelated behavior.

Before installing, understand that using this skill may send station IDs, date ranges, limits, and species filters to BirdWeather's public API. It does not require an API key and I found no evidence that it accesses local private data or persists changes.

Vulnerability Patterns
  • Skill Instruction HijackingAlters the agent's session goals or safety constraints when the skill loads
  • Agent Memory PoisoningWrites attacker-controlled rules into memory that affect later sessions
  • Remote Payload Retrieval and ExecutionFetches external code whose behavior can change after review
  • Embedded Malicious CodeShips malicious scripts inside the skill and executes them locally
  • Unauthorized Access and Privilege EscalationObtains permissions beyond the task's legitimate needs
Vulnerability Patterns
  • MCP Least PrivilegeUnderdeclared Capability, Wildcard Permission, Missing Permission Declaration
  • Prompt InjectionInstruction Override, Hidden Instructions, Exfiltration Commands
  • Data ExfiltrationExternal Transmission, Env Variable Harvesting, File System Enumeration
  • Privilege EscalationExcessive Permissions, Sudo/Root Execution, Credential Access
  • Supply ChainUnpinned Dependencies, External Script Fetching, Obfuscated Code

Finding
The skill advertises and documents a network-capable CLI but does not declare any tool scope such as permissions or allowed-tools. This can lead to overbroad execution in environments that rely on manifest metadata for policy enforcement, making network access less visible to reviewers and increasing the chance of unintended external requests.
