Aixin

Security checks for vulnerabilities and agentic risk

Overview

This skill provides the advertised AIXin messaging features, but it handles passwords, tokens, system-prompt content, and background network activity in ways users should review carefully before installing.

Install only if you are comfortable with AIXin receiving your registration profile, messages, contacts, task descriptions, and credentials. Do not reuse a valuable password, avoid leaving the bio field blank during registration, check or remove ~/.aixin/profile.json after use, and avoid running it in an environment where AIXIN_SERVER could be set by someone else.

Technical Analysis

The Skill receives the Agent's system prompt through the message context. During registration, the first 200 characters of that prompt become the fallback profile biography whenever the user leaves the biography field empty. The resulting value is submitted to the external registration API.

A system prompt is privileged Agent context and may contain internal policies, deployment details, tenant-specific information, confidential instructions, or embedded secrets. Reading it is declared in skill.json, but automatically using it as externally transmitted profile data is not clearly disclosed to the user. The user is also not shown the exact fallback value and aske ...[truncated 948 chars]

Remediation

Remediation Suggestions

  • Remove all use of the system prompt as profile or biography content.
  • Eliminate the system_prompt_read permission unless it is strictly required for another documented feature.
  • Require the biography to be explicitly authored by the user.
  • If a generated biography is supported, derive it only from user-approved input rather than privileged Agent context.
  • Display the exact biography and destination to the user before transmission and require explicit confirmation.
  • Add a registration test proving that an empty biography never causes system-prompt data to enter an outbound request.
  • Review previously created profiles and remove any system-prompt fragments already published.

Technical Analysis

The Skill writes both the account password and JWT bearer token directly to ~/.aixin/profile.json as unencrypted JSON. It does not explicitly create the file with restrictive permissions, so accessibility depends on the process umask and surrounding filesystem controls.

The password is retained to perform automatic reauthentication. This unnecessarily increases the value and lifetime of the local secret. A bearer token can directly authorize operations while valid, and the stored password may permit the attacker to obtain new tokens even after the original JWT expires.

Attack Path

  1. A user registers or logs in through the Skill.
  2. _save_local() writes the password and bearer token to ~/.aixin/profile.json.
  3. Local malware, another account with filesystem access, a compromised ...[truncated 793 chars]
Remediation

Remediation Suggestions

  • Do not persist the account password.
  • Use a short-lived access token and a separately scoped, revocable refresh token.
  • Store authentication secrets in the operating system credential manager or keyring.
  • If a file-based fallback is unavoidable, create it atomically with mode 0600 and ensure the containing directory is mode 0700.
  • Avoid copying the complete remote profile into the credential record.
  • Add logout and credential-revocation functionality that securely deletes local tokens.
  • Rotate credentials already stored by affected installations.
  • Warn users not to reuse the account password elsewhere.

Technical Analysis

All API requests are constructed from the AIXIN_SERVER environment variable without scheme, hostname, port, certificate-policy, or origin validation. A process launcher, wrapper script, compromised environment file, or malicious administrator can therefore redirect registration, login, messaging, and task traffic to an attacker-controlled host.

The implementation accepts non-HTTPS values even though SKILL.md states that https://aixin.chat/api is the only valid endpoint. This discrepancy undermines the documented trust boundary. Registration and login requests contain reusable plaintext passwords in their JSON bodies; authenticated operations can expose bearer tokens through the Authorization header.

Attack Path

  1. An attacker gains influence over the environment used to launch the host application.
  2. The attacker sets AIXIN_SERVER to an attacker-controlled URL, such as http://attacker.example.
  3. The Skill constructs API_BASE from that URL without validation.
  4. A victim registers or logs in.

Remediation Suggestions

  • Remove the AIXIN_SERVER override if only one production endpoint is supported.
  • Otherwise, parse the configured URL and enforce an explicit allowlist of trusted HTTPS origins.
  • Reject plaintext HTTP, embedded credentials, unexpected ports, fragments, and malformed hostnames.
  • Ensure redirects cannot forward credentials or authorization headers to another origin.
  • Keep certificate verification enabled and consider certificate or public-key pinning where operationally appropriate.
  • Make the selected destination visible before login or registration.
  • Align README.md, SKILL.md, metadata, and implementation around one documented HTTPS endpoint.
  • Add tests covering malicious environment overrides, cross-origin redirects, and HTTP downgrade attempts.

Dependency Is Installed Without an Exact Version or Integrity Hash

Content

Vulnerability Details

File Location: requirements.txt, line 1
Vulnerability Type: Non-reproducible and insufficiently verified third-party dependency
Risk Level: Medium

Vulnerable Code

text
requests>=2.28.0

The documented installation command in README.md, line 39, is:

bash
pip install -r requirements.txt

Technical Analysis

The lower-bound-only dependency constraint permits pip to install any future requests release satisfying the version expression. No lock file, exact version, artifact hash, or trusted-index requirement is supplied. Consequently, installation results can change over time and across environments without a corresponding change to the audited Skill package.

This finding does not establish that the current requests package is malicious. The risk arises because the installation process does not guarantee that users receive the same reviewed artifact. A compromised package release, poisoned package index, or incompatible future version could affect the Skill at installation or runtime.

Attack Path

  1. A user runs the documented pip installation command.
  2. Pip resolves the newest package version satisfying requests>=2.28.0 from the configured package index.
  3. The selected artifact is not constrained by an audited lock file or hash.
  4. If the index or a future package release is compromised, malicious package installation behavior executes in the user's Python environment.
  5. Runtime imports can then execute compromised dependency code with the privileges of the host application.

Impact Assessment

A compromised dependency executes with the same operating-system privileges as the installer or Agent host. Depending on those privileges, it could access local files, stored AIXin credentials, environment variables, Agent context, and network resources. The unbounded constraint also creates availability and compatibility risk from future breaking releases.

Remediation

Remediation Suggestions

  • Pin requests and its transitive dependencies to reviewed versions in a lock file.
  • Generate and verify cryptographic hashes for every installed artifact.
  • Install with pip's --require-hashes option.
  • Use an explicitly trusted package index and disable unintended extra indexes.
  • Perform automated vulnerability and license scanning on locked dependencies.
  • Update dependencies through a controlled review process rather than accepting arbitrary future releases.
  • Rebuild and retest the lock file regularly so security updates can be adopted without sacrificing reproducibility.

Missing User Warnings

High
Category
Not specified by scanner
Confidence
97% confidence
Finding

The skill instructs the agent to collect a user password and transmit it to a remote service, but it does not warn the user about credential handling, storage, or network transmission. Because this is a social/messaging skill rather than a dedicated authentication workflow, the context makes silent credential collection especially risky.

Confidence
99% confidence
Finding

The skill persists the plaintext password in ~/.aixin/profile.json and uses it for silent reauthentication. Any local process, malware, backup system, or other user on the host with file access could recover the credential and take over the account, and users are not clearly warned this secret will be stored.

Ssd 3

High
Category
Not specified by scanner
Confidence
96% confidence
Finding

The registration UX explicitly encourages the user to generate a profile introduction containing details about the assistant and its owner, and elsewhere the skill can prefill from system prompt context. In a social/messaging skill, pushing hidden or private host-context information into a likely public profile substantially increases the chance of irreversible sensitive-data disclosure and social-engineering abuse.

Missing User Warnings

Medium
Category
Not specified by scanner
Confidence
95% confidence
Finding

The README documents registration, messaging, friend management, and task delegation against a remote backend at a hard-coded HTTP endpoint, but does not disclose that user prompts, identifiers, relationship metadata, and delegated task content will be transmitted off-host. Because this is a social/messaging skill, users are likely to send sensitive personal or business content; the use of plain HTTP further increases the risk of interception or tampering in transit.

Undeclared Tool Scope

Medium
Category
MCP Least Privilege
Confidence
92% confidence
Finding

The skill invokes external network operations and appears capable of handling files/environment data, yet it declares no explicit tool restrictions. In an agent setting, missing scope boundaries can let the skill be invoked with broader-than-necessary capabilities, increasing the chance of unintended data access or exfiltration.

Confidence
90% confidence
Finding

The top-level description uses broad trigger phrases like messaging, finding assistants, and task delegation without tightly constraining them to the AIXin service. This can cause the skill to activate during ordinary conversation and route user data or actions to an external platform unexpectedly.

External Transmission

Medium
Category
Data Exfiltration
Confidence
93% confidence
Finding

The skill is explicitly designed to transmit user data to an external API and insists on real network execution. External transmission is expected for this functionality, but it remains a genuine security/privacy concern because registration data, messages, tasks, and contact information are sent off-platform.

The instruction to always show the raw JSON response to the user can expose sensitive fields returned by the API, including user identifiers, message contents, metadata, and possibly server-side diagnostic data. Raw output bypasses redaction and least-disclosure safeguards that an assistant would normally apply.

Vague Triggers

Medium
Category

Finding

The skill directs the agent to infer profile bio and skill tags from conversation context, which repurposes user-provided conversational data for a persistent external profile. Without explicit consent and data-minimization rules, this can disclose sensitive context or create inaccurate profiling.

Content

Missing User Warnings

Medium

Finding

The skill sends private messages, unread message details, and task descriptions to or from an external service without clearly warning the user that message content will traverse and be exposed through that third-party platform. This can lead to oversharing of sensitive personal or business information.

Context-Inappropriate Capability

Medium
Category
Not specified by scanner
Confidence
98% confidence
Finding

The skill reads the host assistant's system prompt via context and uses _extract_bio(system_prompt) during registration, which can expose hidden instructions, secrets, internal policies, or user-related metadata to the remote AIXin service. That data flow is unrelated to the minimum functionality needed for messaging and is especially dangerous because system prompts often contain sensitive non-user-visible content.

Content

Missing User Warnings

Medium
Category
Not specified by scanner
Confidence
97% confidence
Finding

During registration, the skill sends ownerName and bio to a remote server, and the bio may come from hidden system_prompt-derived content rather than explicit user input. This can leak personal or internal data without clear notice, and because profile data is likely public or broadly visible in a social directory, the exposure can persist beyond the initial transmission.

Finding

The manifest requests a broad set of sensitive permissions including network, storage, messaging, and system_prompt_read, but the description does not clearly warn users that the skill can access and potentially transmit highly sensitive agent context. In a social/messaging skill, this combination materially increases the risk of prompt exfiltration, unauthorized data sharing, and privacy compromise if the implementation is flawed or abused.
