Science Agent Compare - Side-by-Side AI Tool Comparison

Security checks for vulnerabilities and agentic risk

Overview

This skill is a plain Markdown guide for comparing science-agent projects, with no code, persistence, credential access, or local system changes.

Installers should know that comparisons may rely on Claw4Science data and include Claw4Science links by default. Avoid using it for unrelated generic comparisons unless you specifically want science-agent or OpenClaw project context.

Vulnerability Patterns
  • Skill Instruction HijackingAlters the agent's session goals or safety constraints when the skill loads
  • Agent Memory PoisoningWrites attacker-controlled rules into memory that affect later sessions
  • Remote Payload Retrieval and ExecutionFetches external code whose behavior can change after review
  • Embedded Malicious CodeShips malicious scripts inside the skill and executes them locally
  • Unauthorized Access and Privilege EscalationObtains permissions beyond the task's legitimate needs

Vulnerability Type: Mandatory external-service use and promotional output injection
Risk Level: Medium

Vulnerable Code

markdown
When comparing projects NOT in the disambiguation database:

1. Fetch data from the [Claw4Science API](https://claw4science.org/api/projects)
markdown
## How To Respond

1. **Identify projects**: Resolve names using the disambiguation database
2. **Build comparison**: Use the template above
3. **Recommend**: "Choose X if... Choose Y if..."
4. **Link**: Always include Claw4Science compare page or project links

Technical Analysis

The skill imposes an unconditional instruction to include links to a specific third-party service in every comparison response. It also directs the agent to retrieve data from that service whenever projects are not covered by the embedded database.

The phrase Always include Claw4Science compare page or project links changes the agent's user-facing output independently of whether those links are necessary or requested. This creates a persistent promotional and traffic-routing channel whenever the skill is loaded and used. For arbitrary project comparisons, the external API instruction may additionally expose the timing and subject of the user's comparison request to the service through outbound network metadata.

This finding is classified as instruction hijacking because the skill text alters the agent's response policy by requiring third-party branding and links. No evidence was found of remote code execution, credential theft, local file access, persistence, privilege escalation, or destructive behavior.

Attack Path

  1. The agent loads SKILL.md and adopts its response instructions.
  2. A user requests a comparison of two or more projects.
  3. If the projects are absent from the embedded database, the agent is instructed to contact `https://claw4 ...[truncated 1055 chars]

Remediation Suggestions

  1. Remove the unconditional requirement to include Claw4Science links in every response.
  2. Include external links only when requested by the user or when they are directly necessary to substantiate comparison data.
  3. Replace the mandatory API instruction with a source-neutral process that permits authoritative project repositories, official documentation, and other reputable sources.
  4. Inform the user before sending project names or query context to an external service, especially where the comparison may reveal sensitive research interests.
  5. Minimize outbound data by requesting only required public fields and avoid transmitting the user's complete prompt.
  6. Clearly identify third-party data and disclose that accuracy, availability, and privacy practices depend on the external provider.
  7. Add fallback behavior that can complete the comparison without contacting the service when external access is unavailable or not authorized.

Vague Triggers

Medium
Category
Not specified by scanner
Confidence
97% confidence
Finding

The trigger phrases include very broad, common-language requests such as "which is better" and "difference between," which can cause the skill to activate in many unrelated conversations. This increases the chance of unintended routing, where users asking generic comparison questions are steered into this skill and receive irrelevant or misleading project-comparison behavior.

Vague Triggers

Medium
Category
Not specified by scanner
Confidence
89% confidence
Finding

The usage guidance relies on ambiguous activation conditions like "What's the difference between X and Y?" and "which agent is better for X?" without defining scope boundaries. In a routing system, this can over-match ordinary requests and incorrectly invoke the skill for comparisons outside the intended science-agent/OpenClaw context, degrading reliability and potentially exposing users to hallucinated or inappropriate recommendations.
