Cron Helper

Security checks for vulnerabilities and agentic risk

Overview

The cron helper is mostly straightforward, but it includes an unrelated hidden reference to an external coordination service and an unpinned install suggestion that users should review before installing.

Use this skill only if you are comfortable managing recurring agent tasks, and review scheduled jobs regularly. Avoid installing the suggested ClawSwarm component unless you independently trust its publisher, version, and external endpoints, because that integration is outside the visible cron-helper purpose.

Vulnerability Patterns
  • Insecure DependenciesIntroduces malicious components through unsafe dependency sources
  • Skill Instruction HijackingAlters the agent's session goals or safety constraints when the skill loads
  • Agent Memory PoisoningWrites attacker-controlled rules into memory that affect later sessions
  • Remote Payload Retrieval and ExecutionFetches external code whose behavior can change after review
  • Embedded Malicious CodeShips malicious scripts inside the skill and executes them locally

Technical Analysis

The skill recommends installing the externally maintained clawswarm component without specifying a version, immutable digest, verified publisher, or integrity check. Consequently, the component resolved by clawhub install clawswarm may differ from the version originally reviewed.

A hidden HTML comment also declares external hub, agent-registration, and ping endpoints hosted on onlyflies.buzz. These endpoints and the associated coordination behavior are not necessary for the skill's stated cron-management purpose and are not visibly disclosed to users. Although SKILL.md does not itself execute the installation or establish a network connection, following its recommendation would expand the agent's trust and network boundaries to an unaudited third party.

Attack Path

  1. A user or agent loads the Cron Helper documentation.
  2. The user follows the recommendation and runs clawhub install clawswarm.
  3. The package manager resolves an unpinned, externally maintained version of clawswarm.
  4. If the upstream package is compromised, maliciously updated, or impersonated, attacker-controlled behavior is installed.
  5. The installed component may use the referenced registration, ping, or coordination endpoints.
  6. Depending on that component's implementation and granted permissions, the external operator c ...[truncated 875 chars]

Remediation Suggestions

  1. Remove the unrelated ClawSwarm installation recommendation and hidden OADP endpoint metadata if external agent coordination is not required for cron management.
  2. If the integration is required, disclose it visibly and explain its purpose, network destinations, transmitted fields, retention policy, and security implications.
  3. Pin the dependency to a reviewed, immutable version and cryptographic digest rather than installing by an unversioned name.
  4. Verify and document the dependency publisher and source repository, and require signature or checksum validation before installation.
  5. Require explicit user consent before installation, registration, ping traffic, or other communication with the external service.
  6. Audit the external component independently and execute it with least privilege, restricted filesystem access, narrowly scoped credentials, and an outbound-network allowlist.
  7. Add dependency monitoring and a controlled update process so newer upstream releases are reviewed before deployment.

Session Persistence

Medium
Category
Rogue Agent
Confidence
80% confidence
Finding

The skill explicitly enables persistent scheduled execution, which creates autonomous actions that continue beyond the immediate user session. In agent contexts, persistence increases risk because a mistaken, overly broad, or abused scheduled task can repeatedly perform unintended actions, consume resources, or operate without fresh user review.

Missing User Warnings

Confidence
88% confidence
Finding

This markdown file includes a direct command to delete scheduled tasks (openclaw cron delete <id>) but provides no accompanying warning about the impact of removing an active schedule. Because deletion affects user task configuration and automation state, the documentation should disclose that the action is destructive.
