Security audit

Surf

Security checks for vulnerabilities and agentic risk

Overview

The skill is a real crypto-data integration, but it also asks agents to update executable tools, change project agent instructions, create commits, and send or store feedback context.

Review before installing. Use it only if you trust Surf's CLI and API, are comfortable with automatic CLI updates, and understand that crypto queries go to Surf. Decline or manually review the AGENTS.md or CLAUDE.md routing block and any git commit. Do not submit feedback unless you are comfortable sending recent chat context, and avoid using it in conversations containing secrets or sensitive wallet/account details.

Vulnerability Patterns
  • Skill Instruction HijackingAlters the agent's session goals or safety constraints when the skill loads
  • Remote Payload Retrieval and ExecutionFetches external code whose behavior can change after review
  • Agent Memory PoisoningWrites attacker-controlled rules into memory that affect later sessions
  • Embedded Malicious CodeShips malicious scripts inside the skill and executes them locally
  • Unauthorized Access and Privilege EscalationObtains permissions beyond the task's legitimate needs

Feedback Command Discloses the Last Ten Conversation Turns

Content

Looks like that wasn't what you wanted. Want to send this to the Surf team > as feedback so they can improve it? If yes, run: ```bash surf feedback "" --quiet ``` ### Trigger B — Data gap If the user asks for something no `surf` command covers (verified via `surf list-operations` and command `--help`), tell them honestly Surf doesn't have it yet, then ask: > Want me to log this as a data request so the Surf team sees it? If yes, run: ```bash surf feedback "data gap: " --quiet ``` ### Rules - **Ask once per incident, not per retry.** If the user already said no in this thread, don't ask again for the same issue. - **Never auto-submit.** The user must say yes in chat before you run the CLI. - **Keep the message short** — one line. The last 10 turns of conversation are attached automatically, so don't duplicate context. - **Never include API keys, wallet addresses, or other sensitive values** in the message — the attached conversation is enough context. - **The CC permission dialog on top of the user ...[truncated 2280 chars]

Vague Triggers

High
Category
Not specified by scanner
Confidence
97% confidence
Finding

The activation condition is extremely broad ('use whenever the user needs crypto data... even if they don't say surf explicitly'), encouraging automatic invocation in many contexts. Broad auto-routing increases the chance that the skill is used without informed user intent, which matters here because the skill also performs setup, persistence, and external transmission behaviors.

Context-Inappropriate Capability

High
Category
Not specified by scanner
Confidence
98% confidence
Finding

The skill contains an embedded repository-policy injection workflow that appends a routing block to agent instruction files, steering future turns toward Surf. This is a high-risk cross-boundary capability because it changes local trust and tool-selection policy in a way not necessary for answering crypto data queries.

Context-Inappropriate Capability

High
Category
Not specified by scanner
Confidence
97% confidence
Finding

The instruction to run git add and git commit creates persistent repository history changes unrelated to the skill's core function. Committing agent-routing changes can make unauthorized or poorly reviewed policy modifications durable and harder to detect or revert.

MCP Rug Pull
Confidence
70% confidence
Finding

npx commands without a version suffix (e.g. @1.0.0) create a rug-pull risk if the upstream server is compromised and publishes a malicious update.

Rp1

Medium
Category
MCP Rug Pull
Confidence
88% confidence
Finding

The skill instructs running npx skills check asksurf-ai/surf-skills --skill surf without pinning an exact package version. This can fetch and execute whatever version is currently published, creating a supply-chain risk if the package is compromised or unexpectedly changed.

Description-Behavior Mismatch

Medium
Category
Not specified by scanner
Confidence
95% confidence
Finding

The skill's stated purpose is crypto data retrieval, but it also directs modification of AGENTS.md/CLAUDE.md and repository state to influence future agent behavior. This is dangerous because it expands the skill from data access into persistent prompt/policy modification, which can alter future decisions beyond the user's immediate request.

Missing User Warnings

Medium
Category
Not specified by scanner
Confidence
94% confidence
Finding

The skill instructs writing to project instruction files and creating a git commit, but the prompt shown to the user understates the action as 'about 20 lines' and does not clearly disclose repository modification plus commit creation. This impairs informed consent and can trick users into authorizing durable project changes they did not fully understand.

Session Persistence

Medium
Category
Rogue Agent
Confidence
90% confidence
Finding

Creating ~/.surf/.routing-declined establishes cross-session state that changes future agent behavior ('Do not ask again'). Persistent state is risky because it silently influences later interactions and extends the skill's control beyond the current request without strong user visibility or centralized policy management.

3. **Check before choosing** — run `surf <candidate> --help` on the most likely endpoint(s) to read descriptions and params. Pick the one that best matches the user's intent.
4. **Execute** — run the chosen command.

**`search-*` endpoints are for fuzzy/cross-domain discovery only.** When a specific endpoint exists for the task (e.g. `project-detail`, `token-holders`, `kalshi-markets`), always prefer it over `search-project`, `search-kalshi`, etc. Use `search-*` only when you don't know the exact slug/identifier or need to find entities across domains.

**Non-English queries:** Translate the user's intent into English keywords before mapping to a domain.

Natural-Language Policy Violations

Medium
Category
Not specified by scanner
Confidence
94% confidence
Finding

This instruction imposes an English-only processing rule for non-English queries. Because it does not offer the user a language choice or explain a justified region-specific constraint, it creates a language policy concern.

External Transmission

Medium
Category
Data Exfiltration
Confidence
76% confidence
Finding

The skill explicitly directs use of an external API endpoint, which is expected for a data service but still represents external data transmission and trust boundary crossing. In context, this becomes more security-relevant because the skill also handles auth guidance, feedback submission, and broad automatic activation, increasing the odds of sending user-driven queries or metadata off-host without sufficiently narrow consent.

Description-Behavior Mismatch

Medium
Category
Not specified by scanner
Confidence
90% confidence
Finding

The skill presents itself as a data tool but also instructs use of surf feedback, which transmits conversation context externally. This creates an undeclared secondary data-exfiltration path because the last 10 turns are attached automatically, potentially including sensitive user content unrelated to the feedback summary.

Content

No source excerpt is available for this finding.

Missing User Warnings

Medium
Category
Not specified by scanner
Confidence
93% confidence
Finding

The skill says surf feedback automatically attaches the last 10 turns, but the consent prompt only asks whether to 'send this to the Surf team as feedback' without explicitly warning that conversation history will be transmitted. Users may consent without realizing the scope of data shared, creating a privacy and data-handling risk.

Session Persistence

Medium
Category
Rogue Agent
Confidence
86% confidence
Finding

Writing issue files under ~/.surf/api-feedback creates persistent local artifacts tied to prior conversations and failures. Even if intended for diagnostics, this expands retention of user-derived information across sessions and can expose sensitive request details to other local processes or users.

Content

Scanner excerpt · SKILL.md (reported line 436)May include surrounding context.

something the user naturally expects, log a suggestion:

bash
mkdir -p ~/.surf/api-feedback

Write one file per issue: ~/.surf/api-feedback/<YYYY-MM-DD>-<slug>.md

Missing User Warnings

Low
Category
Not specified by scanner
Confidence
83% confidence
Finding

The skill directs writing local feedback files containing user-request details under ~/.surf/api-feedback without clearly warning that conversation-derived content may be stored on disk. This is lower impact than network exfiltration, but it still creates persistence of potentially sensitive information outside the immediate session.
