Welding Basics

Security checks for vulnerabilities and agentic risk

Overview

This is a welding-planning skill with disclosed local note-taking and installation hygiene issues, but no hidden or malicious behavior in the artifact.

Before installing, prefer a pinned or trusted ClawHub installer source instead of running a floating `npx` command. Use this skill only for appropriate beginner welding planning, and get qualified professional help for structural, vehicle safety-critical, pressurized-container, code-compliant, or high-load repairs.

Vulnerability Patterns
  • Insecure DependenciesIntroduces malicious components through unsafe dependency sources
  • Skill Instruction HijackingAlters the agent's session goals or safety constraints when the skill loads
  • Agent Memory PoisoningWrites attacker-controlled rules into memory that affect later sessions
  • Remote Payload Retrieval and ExecutionFetches external code whose behavior can change after review
  • Embedded Malicious CodeShips malicious scripts inside the skill and executes them locally

# Welding Basics

Master entry-level arc and MIG welding so you can permanently repair farm equipment, vehicles, gates, tools, and custom fabrications without waiting for shops or supply chains. This is not theory — it is a complete, agent-executed training and project protocol that gets you welding safely and productively within 14 days.

`npx clawhub install welding-basics`

Technical Analysis

The installation command invokes clawhub through npx without specifying an exact package version or integrity constraint. If the package is not already available in a trusted local installation, npx may resolve and download the currently published package from the configured npm registry before executing its CLI code.

Consequently, the code executed by this documented command is not immutable and cannot be verified from the reviewed project. A compromised npm publisher account, malicious replacement release, registry compromise, dependency confusion condition, or compromised transitive dependency could cause a future invocation to execute code different from the version originally reviewed.

No malicious implementation is included in the audited project itself; exploitation depends on compromise or malicious publication within the external package supply chain.

Attack Path

  1. An attacker compromises the publisher, package, registry resolution path, or a dependency used by the clawhub npm package.
  2. The attacker publishes a malicious version that becomes the version selected by the unpinned npx clawhub command.
  3. A user follows the installation instruction in SKILL.md.
  4. npx retrieves the attacker-controlled package version from the configured registry.

Remediation Suggestions

  1. Pin the installer to a specific reviewed version, for example:
    shell
    npx --yes clawhub@<reviewed-version> install welding-basics

  2. Verify the selected package version, official publisher identity, provenance, and published integrity metadata before documenting it.
  3. Use a lockfile and npm integrity hashes where the installation workflow supports them.
  4. Prefer installing from a trusted, reviewed artifact or an organization-controlled registry rather than dynamically resolving the latest public package.
  5. Disable or tightly control lifecycle scripts when feasible and review the package's transitive dependency tree.
  6. Run installation with a non-privileged account in a restricted environment, exposing only the files and credentials required for installation.
  7. Establish a controlled update process in which newer package versions are reviewed and tested before the pinned version is changed.

Finding

The skill instructs installation via npx clawhub install welding-basics without pinning a specific package version. That allows execution of whatever version is current at install time, creating a supply-chain risk if the package or one of its dependencies is later compromised or changed in an unsafe way.

Finding

This second unpinned npx clawhub invocation repeats the same supply-chain weakness in executable installation guidance. Repetition increases the chance that users will run the unfixed command directly, exposing them to arbitrary code execution from a future malicious or altered package release.

Finding

This markdown file defines when to activate the skill using broad conditions like repairing broken equipment, building custom parts, or preparing for self-reliance, which could overlap with many ordinary user requests. It does not provide clear trigger boundaries, exclusion conditions, or concrete negative examples to distinguish when this skill should not be invoked.

Finding

The phrase 'Start the intake now' is a generic imperative without context constraints, which can function as an ambiguous activation cue in markdown guidance. Because the document does not pair this with explicit invocation rules or exclusions, it may contribute to accidental activation in adjacent conversational contexts.
