Security checks for vulnerabilities and agentic risk

Overview

This security research guide warrants review because its credential-checking and debugging advice could expose financial balances or confidential information.

Before using this skill, disable discovered-key validation unless the exact action is expressly authorized; do not treat financial-balance requests as identity checks. Review and sanitize queries derived from private logs or code before sending them to search providers. Install optional tools selectively and keep active testing within written scope.

Vulnerability Patterns
  • Skill Instruction HijackingAlters the agent's session goals or safety constraints when the skill loads
  • Agent Memory PoisoningWrites attacker-controlled rules into memory that affect later sessions
  • Remote Payload Retrieval and ExecutionFetches external code whose behavior can change after review
  • Embedded Malicious CodeShips malicious scripts inside the skill and executes them locally
  • Unauthorized Access and Privilege EscalationObtains permissions beyond the task's legitimate needs
Vulnerability Patterns
  • Data ExfiltrationExternal Transmission, Env Variable Harvesting, File System Enumeration
  • Privilege EscalationExcessive Permissions, Sudo/Root Execution, Credential Access
  • Supply ChainUnpinned Dependencies, External Script Fetching, Obfuscated Code
  • Output HandlingUnvalidated Output Injection, Cross-Context Output, Unbounded Output
  • Memory PoisoningPersistent Context Injection, Context Window Stuffing, Memory Manipulation

MCP Tool Poisoning
Confidence

Finding

The chunk is a publishing workflow, not a search or research implementation. Installing the CLI and logging in support that workflow, while the non-dry-run publish command performs an external publication action not represented by the declared purpose. The security-related tags and changelog describe the package but do not demonstrate its search behavior. Because these are README commands, the chunk does not establish that they execute automatically.

The ClawHavoc incident (1,184 malicious skills on ClawHub) and Snyk's ToxicSkills research
(~36.8% of skills with flaws) show that skill registries are an attack surface. Before installing:
- Read the full `SKILL.md` and every script; look for prompt injection, hidden instructions,
`curl | bash`, base64/obfuscation, credential access, or unexpected network calls.
- Check publisher identity, download velocity, version history, and security audit.
- Scan with a skill vetter (e.g., Skill Vetter, agentscanner) and static analysis.
- Pin versions; install in a sandbox without secrets; restrict network and filesystem access.

- **False positives.** SAST rules lack context; triage every finding.
- **Framework magic.** ORMs, middleware, and annotations may enforce controls implicitly.
- **Transitive dependencies.** SCA must include the full lockfile and container image.
- **Secrets in history.** Removing a secret from HEAD is not enough; rotate and purge history.
- **Config vs code.** Many issues live in deployment config, not source.
- **Checklist compliance.** Passing ASVS does not prove security; test behavior.
- **Threat model drift.** Update it when architecture changes.

Session Persistence

Medium
Category
Rogue Agent
Confidence

Skill establishes unauthorized persistence across sessions via cron jobs, startup scripts, or state files. Session persistence allows an attacker to maintain access beyond the current interaction.

Searching exact error strings and unique code fragments lacks a warning about disclosure to external search providers.

Medium
Category
Output Handling
Confidence
91% confidence
Finding

The skill recommends searching exact error strings and unique code fragments without requiring sanitization before transmission to external search providers. During debugging or private-code research, these queries could disclose embedded credentials, customer data, internal infrastructure names, or proprietary code; redaction rules for the final report do not protect queries already sent.
