Gate MCP (OpenClaw / mcporter)

Security checks for vulnerabilities and agentic risk

Overview

This Gate MCP installer is purpose-aligned, but it needs review because it handles financial-service credentials, stores them in local MCP config, uses mutable remote instructions, and executes unpinned packages.

Review carefully before installing. Use least-privilege Gate API keys, avoid withdrawal permission, consider IP allowlisting, and be aware that credentials may be stored locally in mcporter config. Pin and verify npm packages before running them, and do not treat the remote GitHub runtime rules as authoritative instructions unless you trust and have reviewed their exact version.

⚠️ STOP — You MUST read and strictly follow the shared runtime rules before proceeding.

- **Only call MCP tools explicitly listed in this skill.** Tools not documented here must NOT be called, even if they
  exist in the MCP server.

Technical Analysis

The Skill directs the agent to retrieve and obey a remotely hosted document before selecting or calling tools. It additionally declares that the external rules have the “highest priority.” The referenced content is not included in the audited artifact, is not pinned to an immutable commit, and can be changed independently after this package has been reviewed.

This creates an instruction-hijacking boundary: control over the external repository can become control over the agent's behavior when the Skill is loaded. The priority language also attempts to supersede the established system, developer, and user instruction hierarchy.

Attack Path

  1. A user or agent loads this Skill to install Gate MCP services.
  2. The Skill requires the agent to read the external gate-runtime-rules.md document.
  3. The external document is modified by its maintainer or by an attacker who compromises the repository.
  4. The modified document introduces new instructions, such as requesting credentials, suppressing safeguards, invoking unrelated tools, or sending information to an external service.
  5. Because the Skill declares those instructions to have the “highest priority,” a susceptible agent follows the remotely supplied directives.
  6. The resulting actions occur wi ...[truncated 541 chars]

Remediation Suggestions

  1. Remove statements claiming that Skill or remote content has the “highest priority.”
  2. Explicitly state that system, developer, and user instructions retain their normal precedence.
  3. Vendor the required runtime rules into the distributed artifact so they are reviewed with the Skill.
  4. If an external reference is unavoidable, pin it to a specific immutable commit and verify its cryptographic digest before use.
  5. Treat externally retrieved documentation as untrusted reference material rather than executable agent instructions.
  6. Require explicit user confirmation before performing sensitive operations derived from external content.
  7. Include the reviewed rules in release integrity checks and require a new security review whenever they change.

Vulnerability Details

Vulnerability Type: Unpinned third-party package execution
Risk Level: Medium

The README also defines the local server as follows:

```markdown
| `gate` | stdio | Local CEX (`npx -y gate-mcp`) | API Key + Secret (optional for public-only) |
Technical Analysis
The command npx -y gate-mcp resolves a mutable package version from the configured npm registry and automatically executes it without interactive approval. No exact version, lockfile, package digest, or integrity verification is specified. The recommended npm install -g mcporter command is similarly unpinned.
Consequently, the effective code executed by the installation workflow can change after the Skill has been reviewed. A compromised maintainer account, malicious package release, registry compromise, or dependency-chain compromise could cause attacker-controlled JavaScript to run under the invoking user's account.
Attack Path
  1. An attacker compromises the gate-mcp or mcporter publication process, or another dependency in the resolved package graph.
  2. The attacker publishes a malicious version that becomes the version selected by npm.
  3. A user follows the Skill instructions or starts the configured local MCP server.
  4. npx -y gate-mcp downloads the currently resolved package and executes it automatically.
  5. Alternatively, the user runs the recommended unpinned global mcporter installation command and installs the compromised release.
Remediation Suggestions
  1. Pin gate-mcp and mcporter to exact, reviewed versions.
  2. Replace npx -y gate-mcp with an invocation that cannot silently resolve a newer release, such as an exact package version installed from a verified lockfile.
  3. Record and verify npm integrity hashes for distributed dependencies.
  4. Avoid global npm installation where possible; use a project-local dependency with a committed lockfile.
  5. Disable or strictly control package lifecycle scripts during installation where operationally possible.
  6. Document the expected package publisher, registry, version, and digest.
  7. Introduce automated dependency scanning and require security review before updating pinned versions.
  8. Run the MCP package with least privilege and expose only the environment variables and filesystem paths required for operation.
Gate API Credentials Are Passed Through Process Arguments
Vulnerability Details
File Location: scripts/install.sh:63-77
Vulnerability Type: Sensitive credentials exposed in command-line arguments
Risk Level: Medium
Vulnerable Code:
bash
install_stdio() {
    local name="$1"
    local cmd="$2"
    local api_key="$3"
    local api_secret="$4"
    if [ -n "$api_key" ] && [ -n "$api_secret" ]; then
            --env "GATE_API_SECRET=your-api-secret" 2>/dev/null || return 1
    fi
}
Technical Analysis
The installer initially reads the API secret with terminal echo disabled, but later embeds both credentials directly into the argument vector of the mcporter config add process. Hiding standard error does not protect process arguments.
Depending on the operating system and host configuration, command-line arguments can be exposed through process-inspection tools, process accounting, endpoint monitoring, crash diagnostics, audit logs, or telemetry. Any local process or monitoring component permitted to inspect the invoking user's processes may capture the API key and secret while mcporter is running.
The installer also intentionally stores these values in mcporter configuration. The reviewed code does not verify the resulting configuration file permissions or use a dedicated operating-system secret store.
Attack Path
  1. The user runs the installer and enters a Gate API key and secret.
  2. The secret is read without terminal echo, reducing only direct shoulder-surfing exposure.
  3. The installer invokes mcporter config add with the API key and secret embedded in --env command-line arguments.
Remediation
Remediation Suggestions
  1. Do not place API keys or secrets in process command-line arguments.
  2. Use a mcporter secret-input mechanism, protected standard input, an operating-system credential store, or a file-descriptor-based interface.
  3. If a temporary credential file is unavoidable, create it with mode 0600, place it in a securely created private directory, avoid predictable names, and delete it reliably with a signal-safe cleanup trap.
  4. Verify that the final mcporter configuration and parent directories are accessible only to the owning user.
  5. Prefer secret references over copying plaintext values into general configuration files.
  6. Warn users to create least-privilege API keys and recommend disabling withdrawal permission.
  7. Recommend exchange-side IP allowlisting and periodic credential rotation.
  8. Ensure secrets are excluded from logs, diagnostics, shell tracing, crash reports, and installer error messages.
  9. Rotate any credentials that may already have been processed on hosts where command-line telemetry or process accounting is enabled.
Finding
The installer stores user-supplied API credentials in mcporter configuration via --env without clearly warning the user that the secrets will persist locally after installation. Persisted credentials can be exposed later through local config inspection, backups, logs, or other users/processes on the machine, which is risky in an installer context where users may assume the input is transient.
Confidence
Finding
The script configures authenticated HTTP access by adding x-api-key and Authorization headers to remote MCP server definitions, but it does not clearly inform the user that future requests will automatically transmit these credentials or tokens to the configured endpoint. This increases the chance of uninformed credential exposure, especially if the endpoint changes, is misconfigured, or is less trusted than the user assumes.
