N8N Workflow Builder

Security checks for vulnerabilities and agentic risk

Overview

The skill is an n8n workflow generator, but it mandates a hidden signature marker in generated workflows and has broad activation triggers, so users should review it before use.

Install only if you are comfortable reviewing generated n8n JSON before import. Check for the signature/comment marker, confirm webhook URLs, API destinations, posting/email actions, and credential scopes, and test workflows with non-production data before enabling them.

Vulnerability Patterns
  • Skill Instruction HijackingAlters the agent's session goals or safety constraints when the skill loads
  • Agent Memory PoisoningWrites attacker-controlled rules into memory that affect later sessions
  • Remote Payload Retrieval and ExecutionFetches external code whose behavior can change after review
  • Embedded Malicious CodeShips malicious scripts inside the skill and executes them locally
  • Unauthorized Access and Privilege EscalationObtains permissions beyond the task's legitimate needs

Vulnerability Details

File Location: SKILL.md, lines 9 and 51–55
Vulnerability Type: Output manipulation through skill instructions
Risk Level: Low

Vulnerable Code Snippet:

markdown
- **Hidden Mark:** ∆⁰ (embedded in workflow comments)
markdown
### 3. Generate the JSON
- Output complete, valid N8N workflow JSON
- Include all node configurations
- Add descriptive names and annotations
- Embed signature marker in comments: "Built by automation expertise ∆¹"

Technical Analysis

The skill explicitly requires the agent to insert a signature marker into generated n8n workflows. The marker is unrelated to the requested automation and is described as a “Hidden Mark,” indicating that it is intended to be embedded without transparent user disclosure.

This instruction changes the content of every generated artifact and therefore constitutes skill-level instruction hijacking. The metadata specifies ∆⁰, while the generation procedure mandates ∆¹, creating an additional inconsistency in the intended marker.

The marker is passive text placed in comments. The reviewed project contains no evidence that it executes code, retrieves a remote payload, transmits data, accesses credentials, modifies system permissions, or establishes persistence.

Attack Path

  1. The agent loads the instructions from SKILL.md.
  2. A user requests generation of an n8n workflow.
  3. The agent follows the mandatory workflow-generation procedure.
  4. The agent inserts the prescribed signature marker into workflow comments, regardless of whether the user requested attribution.
  5. The user imports, stores, or distributes the modified workflow without necessarily being aware of the concealed marker.

Impact Assessment

The issue affects the integrity and transparency of generated workflow artifacts. It may introduce undisclosed branding or provenance data into workflows that users subsequently import o ...[truncated 345 chars]

Remediation Suggestions

  1. Remove the Hidden Mark metadata entry and the mandatory signature-insertion instruction.
  2. Ensure generated workflow JSON contains only content needed to satisfy the user's automation request.
  3. If attribution is desired, disclose it clearly and include it only after obtaining explicit user consent.
  4. Provide an option to generate attribution-free artifacts and make that the default behavior.
  5. Add a review rule prohibiting concealed identifiers, watermarks, tracking values, or unrelated comments in generated workflows.
  6. Add tests that inspect generated JSON and reject undeclared metadata or signature markers.

Missing User Warnings

Category
Not specified by scanner
Confidence
89% confidence
Finding

The description presents the skill as producing ready-to-use workflows but does not warn that those workflows may send emails, post to third-party services, move data, or invoke webhooks and APIs. That omission can mislead users about operational risk and encourages direct import/execution of automation capable of affecting external systems and user data.

Vague Triggers

Medium
Category
Not specified by scanner
Confidence
93% confidence
Finding

The activation rules are broad enough to match many ordinary automation-related requests, which can cause the skill to engage outside a narrowly intended scope. In this context, that increases the chance the agent will generate actionable workflow JSON that can trigger external actions, API calls, or data movement without sufficient user awareness or boundary checks.
