Openclaw Skill Tado

Security checks for vulnerabilities and agentic risk

Overview

This skill is a straightforward Tado thermostat helper that uses expected Tado API calls, but users should handle tokens carefully and understand that temperature changes can affect their home until cleared.

Install only if you intend to let the agent help operate your Tado thermostat. Keep TADO_TOKEN and TADO_REFRESH_TOKEN out of logs, shell history, shared terminals, and project files, and revoke or rotate them if exposed. Before any heating change, verify the home, zone, target temperature, and termination type; prefer timer-based changes unless you deliberately want a manual override that lasts until cleared.

Vulnerability Patterns
  • Skill Instruction HijackingAlters the agent's session goals or safety constraints when the skill loads
  • Agent Memory PoisoningWrites attacker-controlled rules into memory that affect later sessions
  • Remote Payload Retrieval and ExecutionFetches external code whose behavior can change after review
  • Embedded Malicious CodeShips malicious scripts inside the skill and executes them locally
  • Unauthorized Access and Privilege EscalationObtains permissions beyond the task's legitimate needs
Vulnerability Patterns
  • Prompt InjectionInstruction Override, Hidden Instructions, Exfiltration Commands
  • Data ExfiltrationExternal Transmission, Env Variable Harvesting, File System Enumeration
  • Privilege EscalationExcessive Permissions, Sudo/Root Execution, Credential Access
  • Supply ChainUnpinned Dependencies, External Script Fetching, Obfuscated Code
  • Excessive AgencyUnrestricted Tool Access, Autonomous Decision Making, Scope Creep

Credential Access

High
Category
Privilege Escalation
Confidence
84% confidence
Finding

The skill instructs users to obtain and store both access and refresh tokens in environment variables, and the refresh token provides durable account access beyond the short-lived access token. If those secrets are exposed through shell history, logs, process inspection, or downstream tooling, an attacker could control the user's thermostat account and home zones.

Step 4: Refresh Token

Access tokens expire in ~10 minutes. Use the refresh token to get a new one:

bash
curl -s -X POST "https://login.tado.com/oauth2/token" \

External Transmission

Data Exfiltration
Confidence
60% confidence
Finding

Data is being sent to an external URL. This could be legitimate telemetry or data exfiltration. Manual review is recommended.

Step 1: Get Device Code

bash
curl -s -X POST "https://login.tado.com/oauth2/device_authorize" \
  -d "client_id=1bb50063-6b0c-4d11-bd99-387f4a91cc46" \
  -d "scope=offline_access"

Missing User Warnings

Medium
Category
Not specified by scanner
Confidence
95% confidence
Finding

The skill provides commands that can change thermostat settings, including a MANUAL override that persists until explicitly cancelled, but it does not prominently warn users about the real-world effect on home heating behavior. In a home automation context, unclear persistence and side effects can lead to unintended heating, wasted energy, discomfort, or equipment running longer than expected.

External Transmission

Medium
Category
Data Exfiltration
Confidence
88% confidence
Finding

This request sends an authenticated command to modify a physical thermostat zone, which can directly change heating behavior in the home. In this skill context, the risk is not data exfiltration but unsafe or unintended actuation, especially because examples make it easy to perform persistent or semi-persistent changes without strong guardrails.

Until next schedule change:

bash
curl -s -X PUT "https://my.tado.com/api/v2/homes/$TADO_HOME_ID/zones/$ZONE_ID/overlay" \
  -H "Authorization: Bearer $TADO_TOKEN" \
  -H "Content-Type: application/json" \
  -d '{"setting":{"type":"HEATING","power":"ON","temperature":{"celsius":21}},"termination":{"type":"UNTIL_NEXT_TIME_BLOCK"}}'
