Okki Sync Mail

Security checks for vulnerabilities and agentic risk

Overview

This email/CRM automation skill is purpose-related, but it needs Review because it handles sensitive mailbox data with under-disclosed external AI/Discord flows and unsafe shell-command paths.

Install only after reviewing the code and configuration carefully. Use a dedicated low-privilege mailbox, restrict allowed read/write directories, avoid processing sensitive customer mail until OpenRouter and Discord disclosure/consent is acceptable, and fix the execSync command construction before running automated email capture.

Vulnerability Type: Shell command injection
Risk Level: Critical

Vulnerable Code

js
async function searchOkkiCustomer(email, companyName) {
  const domain = extractDomain(email);

  try {
    const { execSync } = require('child_process');

    if (domain) {
      try {
        const result = execSync(
          `python3 "${CONFIG.vectorSearchPath}" search "${domain}"`,
          { encoding: 'utf8', timeout: 10000 }
        );
        if (result && result.trim()) {
          return { source: 'domain', data: result };
        }
      } catch (e) {
        // Ignore errors and continue
      }
    }

    if (companyName) {
      try {
        const result = execSync(
          `python3 "${CONFIG.vectorSearchPath}" search "${companyName}"`,
          { encoding: 'utf8', timeout: 10000 }
        );
        if (result && result.trim()) {
          return { source: 'company', data: result };
        }
      } catch (e) {
        // Ignore errors
      }
    }
  } catch (err) {
    return null;
  }
}

The values passed into this function originate from an untrusted email:

js
const email = parsed.from?.value?.[0]?.address || '';
const companyName = parsed.from?.text?.replace(/<.*>/, '').trim() || '';
const okkiMatch = await searchOkkiCustomer(email, companyName);

Technical Analysis

execSync() executes a string through a shell. Although domain and companyName are placed inside double quotes, embedded quote characters, command substitutions, shell separators, or other shell metacharacters are not escaped.

Both values are derived from the sender fields of an inbound email. Sender display names and address headers are controlled by the remote sender and must not be treated as safe command arguments.

For example, a crafted display name containing a sequence conceptually equivalent to:

Remediation Suggestions

  1. Replace shell-string execution with an API that accepts an argument array:
js
const { execFile } = require('child_process');

execFile(
  'python3',
  [CONFIG.vectorSearchPath, 'search', domain],
  { encoding: 'utf8', timeout: 10000 },
  callback
);
  1. Apply the same change to company-name searches.
  2. Validate sender-derived search terms:
    • Enforce a conservative maximum length.
    • Reject control characters, null bytes, and line breaks.
    • Parse and validate domains using a dedicated hostname validator.
  3. Run the lookup subprocess under a restricted account without access to SMTP, IMAP, or unrelated filesystem credentials.
  4. Do not pass the complete parent environment to the lookup process unless required.
  5. Add regression tests containing quotes, semicolons, command substitutions, newlines, and shell redirection characters.

OS Command Injection Through LLM-Derived Knowledge-Base Queries

Content
View full analysis

Vulnerability Details

File Location: kb-retrieval.js:20-34, with query construction at kb-retrieval.js:123-153
Vulnerability Type: Shell command injection across an untrusted LLM boundary
Risk Level: Critical

Vulnerable Code

js
async function searchVectorDB(query, limit = 3) {
  console.log(`🔍 Vector database search: ${query}`);

  try {
    const searchScript = path.join(CONFIG.vectorStorePath, 'search-customers.py');

    const result = execSync(
      `${CONFIG.venvPython} "${searchScript}" "${query}" --limit ${limit}`,
      { encoding: 'utf8', timeout: 10000, stdio: ['pipe', 'pipe', 'ignore'] }
    );

    if (result && result.trim()) {
      return {
        found: true,
        results: result.trim().split('\n').slice(0, limit),
        source: 'lancedb'
      };
    }
  } catch (err) {
    console.log(`Vector search unavailable or returned no results: ${err.message}`);
  }

  return { found: false, results: [], source: 'none' };
}

The query includes entities produced from inbound email content:

js
const baseQueries = intentQueries[intent] || [];
searchQueries.push(...baseQueries);
searchQueries.push(...keyEntities);

const uniqueQueries = [...new Set(searchQueries)].slice(0, 5);

const vectorResults = await searchVectorDB(uniqueQueries.join(' '), 3);

Technical Analysis

The query value is inserted into a shell command without escaping. keyEntities are generated by the external intent-classification model from untrusted email subject and body content.

An LLM output is not a security boundary or sanitizer. A crafted email can influence returned entities so that they contain quote characters and shell syntax. The exported retrieveKnowledge() function can also be called directly with malicious keyEntities.

When the resulting query reaches execSync(), the shell evaluates the constructed string rather than passing the query as an opaque argument.

The numeric limit is also interpolated withou ...[truncated 1188 chars]

Remediation Suggestions

  1. Eliminate shell interpretation:
js
const { execFile } = require('child_process');

execFile(
  CONFIG.venvPython,
  [searchScript, query, '--limit', String(limit)],
  {
    encoding: 'utf8',
    timeout: 10000,
    maxBuffer: 1024 * 1024
  },
  callback
);
  1. Validate limit as a bounded integer.
  2. Treat every LLM field as untrusted:
    • Require keyEntities to be an array of strings.
    • Enforce per-entity and aggregate length limits.
    • Remove control characters and reject unexpected data types.
  3. Do not rely solely on a restrictive character allowlist; argument-array execution is the primary control.
  4. Run the vector-search process with a minimal environment and a restricted working directory.
  5. Add tests in which model-derived entities contain shell separators, quotes, substitutions, and newlines.

OS Command Injection in the SMTP Wrapper

Vulnerable Code

function sendEmail(options) {
  const args = ['node', SMTP_SCRIPT, 'send'];

  if (options.to) {
    args.push('--to', options.to);
  }
  if (options.subject) {
    args.push('--subject', options.subject);
  }
  if (options.html) {
    args.push('--html');
    args.push('--body', options.html);
  } else if (options.body) {
    args.push('--body', options.body);
  }
  if (options.attach) {
    args.push('--attach', options.attach);
  }
  if (options.cc) {
    args.push('--cc', options.cc);
  }

  try {
    const output = execSync(args.join(' '), { encoding: 'utf-8' });
    return {
      success: true,
      output: output
    };
  } catch (error) {
    return {
      success: false,
      error: error.message
    };
  }
}

Technical Analysis

The function initially constructs an argument array, but then converts it into a single shell command using args.join(' '). No argument is quoted or escaped.

Consequently, values such as the recipient, subject, body, HTML, attachment path, or CC field can introduce spaces, shell separators, redirections, command substitutions, or additional command-line switches. Email bodies and subjects naturally contain spaces, so the current implementation is also functionally unreliable even without a malicious payload.

A caller-controlled subject conceptually equivalent to:

text
Normal subject; attacker-command; #

would be interpreted as multiple shell commands rather than one SMTP argument.

Attack Path

  1. An untrusted or partially trusted caller supplies an SMTP option such as subject, body, html, to, cc, or attach.
  2. sendEmail() appends the value to args.
  3. args.join(' ') creates an unescaped command string.
  4. execSync() passes the string to a shell.
  5. The shell executes embedded attacker-controlled syntax. 6 ...[truncated 660 chars]

Remediation Suggestions

  1. Use execFileSync() with an argument array:
js
const { execFileSync } = require('child_process');

const output = execFileSync(
  'node',
  [SMTP_SCRIPT, 'send', ...smtpArgs],
  {
    encoding: 'utf8',
    shell: false
  }
);
  1. Prefer importing and calling the SMTP implementation directly instead of creating a child process.
  2. Validate recipient and CC addresses with a robust mailbox parser.
  3. Validate attachment paths with the same real-path allowlist used by scripts/smtp.js.
  4. Enforce maximum lengths for subjects and bodies.
  5. Preserve the draft-first and explicit-confirmation controls when replacing the wrapper.
  6. Add command-injection regression tests for every wrapper option.

Vulnerable Code

Intent classification transmits email subject and body content:

js
const prompt = `You are an email intent classifier for a B2B electronics company.

Email to classify:
Subject: ${subject}
Body: ${body.slice(0, 2000)}

Classification:`;

const response = await fetch('https://openrouter.ai/api/v1/chat/completions', {
  method: 'POST',
  headers: {
    'Content-Type': 'application/json',
    'Authorization': `Bearer ${process.env.OPENROUTER_API_KEY}`,
    'HTTP-Referer': 'https://farreach-electronic.com',
    'X-Title': 'Farreach EmailIntent'
  },
  body: JSON.stringify({
    model: 'anthropic/claude-sonnet-4',
    messages: [

        content: prompt
      }
    ],
    temperature: 0.1,
    max_tokens: 200
  })
});

Reply generation additionally transmits sender identity and local knowledge-base excerpts:

js
let prompt = `Generate a professional email reply based on:

ORIGINAL EMAIL:

From: ${email.from || 'Unknown'}
Content:

  kbResults.results.forEach((r, i) => {
    prompt += `\n[${i + 1}] Source: ${r.source || 'Unknown'}\n${r.content?.slice(0, 300) || r}\n`;
  });
}

The completed prompt is then sent to the same external API:

Remediation Suggestions

  1. Make external LLM processing explicitly opt-in and disabled by default.
  2. Clearly disclose:
    • OpenRouter and any downstream model provider.
    • The exact data fields transmitted.
    • Applicable retention, training, and regional-processing policies.
  3. Add a true local-only mode using keyword classification and local templates.
  4. Redact or tokenize:
    • Email addresses and personal names.
    • Order and invoice numbers.
    • Phone numbers and physical addresses.
    • Credentials, API keys, and other secret-like strings.
  5. Send only the minimum excerpts required for the task.
  6. Separate internal knowledge retrieval from external generation and require explicit authorization before exporting knowledge-base content.
  7. Make --dry-run network-silent unless an additional flag explicitly authorizes external model calls.
  8. Add configurable data-loss-prevention checks and an allowlist of permissible knowledge-base sources.
  9. Document data handling in SKILL.md and configuration instructions.

File Location: discord-review.js:83-119
Additional Locations: discord-review.js:225-277, discord-review.js:389-435, discord-review.js:527-551
Vulnerability Type: Sensitive-data disclosure and weak approval authorization
Risk Level: Medium

Vulnerable Code

Draft content and sender metadata are included in a Discord embed:

js
function buildEmbed(draft) {
  const embed = {
    title: `📧 [EMAIL REVIEW] ${draft.subject || 'No Subject'}`,
    fields: [
      {
        name: '📮 From',
        value: draft.from || 'Unknown',
        inline: true
      },
      {
        name: '🎯 Intent',
        value: `${draft.intent || 'unknown'} (${draft.confidence?.toFixed(2) || 'N/A'})`,
        inline: true
      }
    ],
    description: '```' + (draft.reply || draft.content || 'No content') + '```',
    footer: {
      text: `Draft ID: ${draft.draft_id || 'N/A'} | Timeout: 30 min`
    },
    timestamp: new Date().toISOString()
  };

  return embed;
}

The embed is sent to Discord:

js
const result = await discordRequest(
  `channels/${channelId}/messages`,
  'POST',
  messagePayload,
  token
);

The local approval command accepts a review ID without recording or verifying an approver identity:

js
if (args[0] === 'approve' || args[0] === 'send') {
  const reviewId = args[1];
  if (!reviewId) {
    process.exit(1);
  }

  const token = loadDiscordToken();
  const config = loadConfig();
  await processReviewAction(reviewId, 'send', token, config.channel_id, null);
  return;
}

Approval immediately loads and sends the corresponding draft:

js
case 'send':
case 'approve':
  const draftPath = path.join(DRAFTS_DIR, `${draftId}.json`);
  const draft = JSON.parse(fs.readFileSync(draftPath, 'utf8'));

  await sendEmail(draft);

  updateDraftStatus(draftId, 'sent', {
    sent_at: new Date().toISOString()
  });
  review.status = 'completed';
  review.action = 'sent';
  break;

Remediation Suggestions

  1. Make Discord review explicitly opt-in and document all transmitted fields.
  2. Minimize channel content:
    • Mask sender addresses.
    • Show only a short, redacted draft preview.
    • Keep full content in a protected local review interface.
  3. Restrict the Discord channel to a dedicated reviewer role.
  4. Use cryptographically random review identifiers, such as crypto.randomUUID().
  5. Require signed, short-lived approval tokens bound to:
    • The draft ID.
    • The reviewer identity.
    • The permitted action.
    • An expiration time.
  6. Verify that a review is still pending and has not expired before sending.
  7. Record the authenticated approver identity and immutable audit metadata.
  8. Require the SMTP sender’s explicit confirmation flag in the approval path rather than relying on an implicit internal call.
  9. Protect pending-review and draft files with restrictive filesystem permissions.
  10. Never treat knowledge of a review ID as sufficient authorization.
