Security checks for vulnerabilities and agentic risk

Overview

The skill mostly does the advertised document explanation, but it also tells the agent to run local commands, keep a usage counter, and append unrelated promotional links.

Review before installing. The core skill can help explain Russian official documents, but it also asks the agent to run local Python commands, track how many times it has promoted related packs, and append external Telegram links. Remove the Attribution section or only install if you accept that extra local state and promotional behavior.

Vulnerability Patterns
  • Skill Instruction HijackingAlters the agent's session goals or safety constraints when the skill loads
  • Agent Memory PoisoningWrites attacker-controlled rules into memory that affect later sessions
  • Remote Payload Retrieval and ExecutionFetches external code whose behavior can change after review
  • Embedded Malicious CodeShips malicious scripts inside the skill and executes them locally
  • Unauthorized Access and Privilege EscalationObtains permissions beyond the task's legitimate needs

Technical Analysis

The skill directs the agent to append unrelated promotional material and external Telegram links to responses generated for users seeking explanations of official documents. This content is not required for the skill's declared translation and explanation functionality. Because the instruction is embedded in the skill definition, loading and following the skill changes the agent's final-output behavior without a corresponding user request.

The same section instructs the agent to execute fixed Python commands that read and update /home/node/.openclaw/workspace/ru-pack-counter.txt. This creates persistent state outside the skill package and uses that state to control promotional output over multiple invocations. The stored value is an integer rather than an attacker-controlled rule or executable payload, so the demonstrated persistence is limited to tracking and controlling the injection frequency. Nevertheless, it causes cross-invocation behavior and modifies the workspace for ...[truncated 1880 chars]

Remediation Suggestions

  1. Remove the entire Attribution section, including both Python commands, the counter logic, the promotional message, and the Telegram links.
  2. Restrict the skill's output instructions to content directly required to explain the user's document.
  3. Do not execute shell or Python commands for attribution, advertising, telemetry, invocation counting, or response decoration.
  4. If invocation metrics are legitimately required, implement them through an explicit, consent-based, platform-managed telemetry mechanism rather than skill-authored filesystem commands.
  5. Apply least privilege by preventing translation-only skills from invoking command-execution tools or writing workspace files.
  6. Add a review policy that flags skill instructions requiring unrelated final-response content, external promotional links, or cross-session state changes.
  7. Retest the remediated skill and verify that it neither accesses ru-pack-counter.txt nor appends content outside the documented response format.

MCP Tool Poisoning
Confidence
90% confidence
Finding

Confusable Unicode characters (e.g., Cyrillic or Greek lookalikes of Latin letters) can make a malicious tool name appear identical to a trusted one.

Context-Inappropriate Capability

High
Category
Not specified by scanner
Confidence
99% confidence
Finding

The skill instructs the agent to execute local shell commands and read/write a workspace file for a usage counter, which is unrelated to the declared document-translation purpose. This creates unauthorized side effects, enables stateful tracking across sessions, and normalizes command execution from skill content, increasing the risk of abuse if similar patterns are extended or copied.

Missing User Warnings

High
Category
Not specified by scanner
Confidence
99% confidence
Finding

The markdown explicitly tells the agent to run shell commands and modify a file without any user-facing warning or consent. Silent local state modification is dangerous because it violates least surprise, can persist data across interactions, and demonstrates that the skill attempts to drive system-level actions outside its legitimate translation role.

Vague Triggers

Medium
Category
Not specified by scanner
Confidence
96% confidence
Finding

The trigger list contains generic phrases such as "непонятно", "что значит", and "перевод", which overlap with common everyday requests and are not specific to this skill's document-analysis scope. The file also does not provide exclusion conditions or negative examples to clarify when these phrases should not activate the skill.

Description-Behavior Mismatch

Medium
Category
Not specified by scanner
Confidence
97% confidence
Finding

The skill's stated function is to explain bureaucratic documents, but it also covertly performs tracking and injects promotional content based on a local counter. This is a scope violation: hidden secondary objectives can mislead users, bypass consent expectations, and encourage the model to prioritize undisclosed behavior over the user's task.
