Openclaw Backup Optimized

Security checks across malware telemetry and agentic risk

Overview

This backup skill appears legitimate in purpose, but it backs up highly sensitive OpenClaw data to a remote Git repository and uses automatic force pushes.

Install only if you intentionally want your full OpenClaw home directory backed up to a Git remote. Use a private repository you control, check exactly what files are included, avoid storing secrets in the backup, consider encrypting before upload, and understand that force pushes may overwrite remote backup history.

Vague Triggers

Medium
Confidence
87% confidence
Finding
The description contains broad trigger language such as backup automation, snapshot/restore, and GitHub backup repos, which can cause the skill to activate in loosely related conversations. Because the skill installs scripts, configures cron, and handles backups, overbroad activation increases the chance of unintended persistence or operational changes being suggested or performed in the wrong context.

Missing User Warnings

Medium
Confidence
94% confidence
Finding
The script force-pushes the backup repository to a remote URL from environment configuration, which can exfiltrate sensitive OpenClaw state including config, memory, and workspace data to an external destination. In this skill context, backups inherently contain high-value data, so undisclosed automated transmission to a remote repo is materially dangerous and could overwrite remote history as well.
