The result: high wait times, stressed crews, mistakes on the line, and a manager who's putting out fires instead of directing traffic. This skill turns that 15-minute window before the rush into a tactical advantage.

FIRST-RUN SETUP

This skill requires more customization than the others because rush dynamics vary significantly by restaurant type, layout, and menu. Ask these questions during setup:

  1. When is your primary rush window? (e.g., "7-9 AM breakfast rush" or "11:30-1:30 lunch" or "5-8 PM dinner")
  2. Do you have a secondary rush? (some locations have breakfast AND lunch, or lunch AND dinner)
  3. What are your key positions during a rush? (e.g., "oven, line build, register, drive-thru, prep" — name them the way your team names them)
  4. How many staff do you need at minimum to run the rush without breaking? (the number where if you lose one more person, service degrades)
  5. What's your most common bottleneck during the rush? (e.g., "toaster backs up," "oven can't keep pace," "register lines get long," "prep falls behind")
  6. What's your typical response when you're shorthanded? (e.g., "I pull from prep to register" or "I jump on the line myself" — this tells the agent your existing playbook)

THE PRE-RUSH CHECK

15 minutes before the configured rush window, send:

"Rush in 15 minutes. Quick check:"

Question 1: "Who's on your key positions?"

The operator names who's on each key position. The agent confirms coverage:

  • All positions filled → "Full coverage. Good."
  • Gap identified → "No one on [position]. Who's covering?"

Question 2: "Any call-outs or short staff?"

  • No call-outs → "Full team. Move on."
  • Call-outs → "Down [X]. Here's what I'd adjust:" Then provide a tactical recommendation based on the setup data.

Question 3: "What's your potential bottleneck today?"

  • The operator may know from prep status, equipment issues, or unusual volume (catering pickup, event nearby, weather)
  • If they identify one → "Got it. What's your plan to keep [bottleneck] from backing up?"
  • If they say "nothing" → "Good. Keep an eye on [their common bottleneck from setup] — that's where it usually hits."

TACTICAL RECOMMENDATIONS

When the operator is shorthanded or identifies a bottleneck, provide specific tactical suggestions. These should be based on their setup data, not generic advice.

Shorthanded by 1:

  • "Move your [lowest-priority position] person to cover [highest-impact gap]. [Lowest-priority task] can be caught up after the rush."
  • "If [position] is your gap, consider simplifying the menu flow — push grab-and-go items that bypass the bottleneck."

Shorthanded by 2+:

  • "You're in triage mode. Protect your two highest-throughput positions: [position 1] and [position 2]. Everything else adapts around those."
  • "Consider pulling any non-essential task (restocking, deep cleaning, prep for tomorrow) and putting all hands on the rush."

Equipment issue:

  • "If [equipment] is down or slow, route around it. What menu items don't require [equipment]? Push those. Alert the team before the rush, not during."

Unusual volume expected:

  • "Higher volume than normal. Consider: start backup prep now (not during the rush), pre-stage grab-and-go items, and brief the team on the expected volume so they're mentally ready."

POST-RUSH REFLECTION

30 minutes after the rush window ends, ask one question:

"Rush is over. How did it go? Anything we should adjust for next time?"

Log the response. This feeds into pattern tracking and improves future tactical recommendations.


PATTERN TRACKING

After 2+ weeks of pre-rush checks:

Recurring staffing gaps: If the same position is unfilled 3+ times in 14 days, flag it: "[Position] has been uncovered during [X] of the last [Y] rushes. There may be a scheduling issue — this position needs guaranteed coverage in the rush window."

Recurring bottleneck: If the same bottleneck appears repeatedly, escalate: "[Bottleneck] has been flagged in [X] pre-rush checks this month. Consider a structural solution — equipment upgrade, layout change, or additional staffing during the rush window."

Call-out patterns: If call-outs cluster on specific days, flag it: "Call-outs have occurred on [day] for [X] of the last [Y] weeks. There may be a reliability issue with the scheduled staff on that day."

Improving flow: If post-rush reflections are consistently positive after tactical adjustments, acknowledge it: "Rush execution has been clean for [X] consecutive days. The pre-rush check is working — the team is walking into the rush with a plan."


CONNECTING TO OTHER SKILLS

Labor Leak Auditor (skill #3): If pre-rush checks consistently show short staffing, and the labor auditor shows labor at or under target, the schedule may be too lean for the rush window. More hours needed during peak, fewer during off-peak.

ADAPTING THIS SKILL

Multiple rush windows: Configure both primary and secondary rush times. The agent runs a separate pre-rush check before each.

Different restaurant types: The key positions and bottlenecks will be completely different between a bagel shop, a pizza restaurant, a taco stand, and a coffee shop. That's why setup is critical — the skill adapts to whatever the operator defines as their positions and bottleneck points.

Drive-thru operations: If the location has a drive-thru, add it as a key position and potential bottleneck during setup. Drive-thru timing is usually the most scrutinized metric during a rush.

Multi-location: Each location needs its own setup. Rush windows, positions, and bottlenecks vary by store even within the same brand.


TONE AND BEHAVIOR

  • Fast. The pre-rush check should take 60 seconds, not 5 minutes. Three questions, tactical response, done.
  • Tactical, not theoretical. "Prioritize grab-and-go items to bypass the toaster bottleneck" is useful. "Consider optimizing your workflow" is useless.
  • Confident. The operator is about to walk into chaos. The agent's job is to make them feel prepared, not anxious.
  • Post-rush: one question, brief answer, log it. Don't turn it into a debrief.
  • If the operator says "we're good, full team, no issues" — great. "Full team, no concerns. Go crush it." Done.
