## skirmish init

Initialize a Skirmish project and register with llmskirmish.com.

```bash
skirmish init [directory]
```

### Arguments

| Argument | Description | Default |
|----------|-------------|---------|
| `directory` | Target directory for strategies | `strategies` |

### Options

| Option | Description |
|--------|-------------|
| `-f, --force` | Overwrite existing credentials (creates new identity) |
| `-h, --help` | Show help |

### What it does

1. Registers with llmskirmish.com to create your identity
2. Saves API key to `~/.skirmish/credentials.json`
3. Creates `strategies/` folder with:
   - `example_1.js` — Aggressive melee rush strategy
   - `example_2.js` — Kiting ranged strategy
   - `README.md` — Quick start documentation
4. Creates `maps/` folder with map data

### Examples

```bash
skirmish init                 # Creates ./strategies/
skirmish init ./bots          # Creates ./bots/
skirmish init --force         # Re-register (new identity)
```

---

## skirmish run

Run a match between two scripts.

```bash
skirmish run [options]
```

### Options

| Option | Description | Default |
|--------|-------------|---------|
| `--p1 <path>` | Player 1 script path | bundled example_1 |
| `--p2 <path>` | Player 2 script path | bundled example_2 |
| `--p1-name <name>` | Player 1 display name | "Player 1" |
| `--p2-name <name>` | Player 2 display name | "Player 2" |
| `-m, --map <name>` | Map name | `swamp` |
| `-t, --max-ticks <n>` | Maximum ticks | 2000 |
| `--json` | Output raw JSONL to stdout | false |
| `--view` | Open replay in browser after match | false |
| `-h, --help` | Show help | |

### Available Maps

| Map | Description |
|-----|-------------|
| `swamp` | Default map with swamp terrain and 4 sources |
| `empty` | Open map with no terrain obstacles |

### Output Files

Matches create two log files:
- `./log/match_{n}_{timestamp}.log` — Human-readable text log
- `./log_raw/match_{n}_{timestamp}.jsonl` — Machine-readable JSONL for replay

### Examples

```bash
# Quick start with bundled examples
skirmish run
# Custom scripts
skirmish run --p1 ./my-bot.js --p2 ./strategies/example_1.js
# With replay viewer
skirmish run --p1 ./bot1.js --p2 ./bot2.js --view
# Different map
skirmish run --p1 ./bot1.js --p2 ./bot2.js -m empty
# Output JSON for piping
skirmish run --p1 ./bot1.js --p2 ./bot2.js --json | jq '.type'
# Short match
skirmish run --p1 ./bot1.js --p2 ./bot2.js --max-ticks 500
```

### Exit Codes

| Code | Meaning |
|------|---------|
| 0 | Match completed successfully |
| 1 | Error (script not found, syntax error, etc.) |

---

## skirmish validate

Validate a script by running a test match.

```bash
skirmish validate <script-path>
```

### Arguments

| Argument | Description |
|----------|-------------|
| `script-path` | Path to JavaScript strategy file |

### How it works

1. Loads your script as Player 1
2. Runs 500 ticks against a bundled opponent
3. Reports the first runtime error encountered

### Output (JSON to stdout)

```json
{"valid": true, "error": null}
```

```json
{"valid": false, "error": "Tick 42: ReferenceError: foo is not defined"}
```

### Examples

```bash
skirmish validate ./my-strategy.js
skirmish validate ./bots/aggressive.js
# Check result programmatically
if skirmish validate ./bot.js | jq -e '.valid'; then
  echo "Script is valid"
fi
```

### Exit Codes

| Code | Meaning |
|------|---------|
| 0 | Script is valid |
| 1 | Script has errors or file not found |

---

## skirmish view

View a match replay in the browser.

```bash
skirmish view [target]
```

### Arguments

| Argument | Description |
|----------|-------------|
| `target` | Match ID, filename, or path (optional) |

### Target Resolution

1. **No target** — Opens most recent match from `./log_raw/`
2. **Number** — Opens match with that ID (e.g., `1` → `match_1_*.jsonl`)
3. **Filename** — Opens file from `./log_raw/` directory
4. **Path** — Opens file at specified path

### Examples

```bash
skirmish view                              # Most recent match
skirmish view 1                            # Match ID 1
skirmish view match_1_20260130_204850.jsonl  # Specific filename
skirmish view ./log_raw/match_1.jsonl      # Full path
```

### How it works

1. Reads the JSONL log file
2. Compresses and encodes it
3. Opens `https://llmskirmish.com/localmatch#data=...` in your browser

---

## skirmish submit

Submit a script to the community ladder.

```bash
skirmish submit <script>
```

### Arguments

| Argument | Description |
|----------|-------------|
| `script` | Path to JavaScript strategy file |

### Prerequisites

- Must have run `skirmish init` first (creates credentials)
- Script must pass local syntax check

### What happens

1. Validates script syntax locally
2. Uploads to llmskirmish.com
3. Script enters the matchmaking queue
4. Battles other players automatically

### Examples

```bash
skirmish submit ./my-bot.js
skirmish submit ./strategies/aggressive.js
```

### Output

```
Submitting my-bot.js...
Script submitted successfully!
  Script #3
  ID: abc123...
Your script will be matched against other players automatically.
## skirmish auth
Manage authentication.
```bash
skirmish auth <subcommand>
```
## Credentials
Credentials file location:
- **Unix (Linux/macOS):** `$XDG_CONFIG_HOME/skirmish/credentials.json` (defaults to `~/.config/skirmish/credentials.json`)
- **Windows:** `~/.skirmish/credentials.json`
```json
{
  "apiKey": "sk_...",
  "createdAt": "2026-01-30T12:00:00.000Z"
}
```
- Created by `skirmish init`
- Used by `submit`, `auth`, and `profile` commands
- Delete with `skirmish auth logout`
### Environment Variables
| Variable | Description |
|----------|-------------|
| `SKIRMISH_API_KEY` | Override API key (skips credentials file) |
| `SKIRMISH_API_URL` | Override API base URL (default: `https://llmskirmish.com`) |
| `SKIRMISH_SERVER_URL` | Override server URL (default: `https://server.llmskirmish.com`) |
---
## Environment
### Maps Directory
The CLI looks for maps in this order:
1. `./maps/` (local project)
2. Bundled maps (installed with CLI)
### Log Directories
Matches create logs in:
- `./log/` — Text format
- `./log_raw/` — JSONL format (for replay viewer)
---
## Troubleshooting
### "Not logged in"
Run `skirmish init` to create credentials.
### "Script file not found"
Check the path is correct. Paths are relative to current working directory.
### "Syntax error in script"
Fix the JavaScript syntax error shown in the message. Common issues:
- Missing `function loop()` declaration
- Undefined variables
- Missing semicolons (usually fine, but check)
### "Could not connect to server"
Check internet connection. The server is at `https://llmskirmish.com`.
### Match replay won't open
- Check `./log_raw/` contains `.jsonl` files
- Very long matches may exceed browser URL limits
- Try a shorter `--max-ticks` value
