### Notes on the Correspondence Table

**Ogham correspondences:** The Irish tree-alphabet (Ogham) is mapped to runes, creating a bridge between the Norse and Celtic tree-traditions. This is a modern synthesis, not historical, but provides a useful comparative framework.

**Zodiac correspondences:** The zodiac assignments follow a counterclockwise progression through the Elder Futhark (starting with Fehu at Sagittarius and moving backward through the zodiac). This is a modern esoteric system, not attested in historical sources.

**Chakra correspondences:** Only the 3rd aett (Týr through Othala) has chakra correspondences, mapping from Sahasrara (crown) to Muladhara (root) — i.e., top-down rather than the more common bottom-up progression. This suggests the 3rd aett as the path of spiritual descent-into-matter, complementing the 1st aett's path of material-creation and the 2nd aett's path of challenge-and-transformation.

**Element system:** The dual elements (e.g., Fehu = Fire/Earth, Hagalaz = Water/Air, Dagaz = Fire/Air, Ingwaz = Water/Earth) reflect the Norse cosmological principle of opposing forces in dynamic tension (see `nordic-worldview.md`). Each dual-element rune sits at the boundary between two realms.

## 2. The Annual Runic Cycle — Aswynn's System

From Freya Aswynn's *Northern Magic* (Северная магия), this system maps the 24 runes onto the **8 pagan festivals** of the year, assigning 3 runes to each festival. The cycle begins with the 3rd aett (taking it as the "first" aett), reflecting Aswynn's view that the path of the runes begins with the spiritual/martial (Týr) rather than the material (Fehu).

### Spring Equinox — Тейваз, Беркана, Эваз

| Rune | Role | Meaning |
|------|------|---------|
| **Tiwaz** | Heavenly Father | The sky-god principle; justice and sacrifice as the foundation of the new year |
| **Berkano** | Earth Mother | The birch-goddess; fertility and birth as the earth awakens |
| **Ehwaz** | New Life | The horse/steed; harmonious movement and the partnership of sky-father and earth-mother producing spring |

**Mythological pattern:** Tiwaz (heaven) + Berkano (earth) → Ehwaz (new life). This mirrors the divine marriage (hieros gamos) that generates the annual cycle.

### Beltane / Walpurgis Night — Манназ, Лагуз, Ингуз

| Rune | Role | Meaning |
|------|------|---------|
| **Mannaz** | Mind/Reason | The conscious, rational principle; "Mannaz" also means "man" (male) |
| **Laguz** | Intuition | The watery, unconscious principle; the attraction that draws opposites together |
| **Ingwaz** | Union of Mind & Intuition | "Ingwaz" also means "woman" (female); the seed that results from the union of conscious and unconscious |

**Mythological pattern:** The "divine wedding" — Wodan and Frija (Germanic tradition), or the twin-pairs Njörðr/Nerþus and Freyr/Freyja. Mannaz (masculine consciousness) is drawn by Laguz (feminine intuition) into Ingwaz (the sacred union).

### Midsummer — Отила, Дагаз, Феху

| Rune | Role | Meaning |
|------|------|---------|
| **Othala** | Óðinn | The ancestral heritage; the god who rules the heights of summer |
| **Dagaz** | Summer solstice / Baldr's death | The moment of maximum light that simultaneously contains the seed of darkness — Baldr, son of the Sun, dies at the peak of summer |
| **Fehu** | Freyja/Frigg | Wealth and abundance at the height of summer's productivity |

**Key insight:** Dagaz at Midsummer represents the paradox of the solstice — the longest day is also the moment when days begin to shorten. Baldr's death at the peak of light mirrors this cosmic truth: every apex contains the beginning of decline.

### Lammas / Lughnasadh — Ансуз, Уруз, Турисаз

| Rune | Role | Meaning |
|------|------|---------|
| **Ansuz** | Óðinn's inspiration | The divine breath; the poetic and prophetic inspiration of the chief god |
| **Uruz** | Primal rage | The raw, undirected force of nature; Þórr's storm-power |
| **Thurisaz** | Moderating force | The giant-principle as the buffer between Óðinn's mind and Uruz's rage |

**Mythological pattern:** The struggle between Óðinn and the giants, with Þórr as the protective energy between them (Þórr is half-giant himself). This can be enacted as Þórr's battle with the giant Hrungnir for possession of the Sun, or as Óðinn's contest with the giant Vafþrúðnir.

**Psychological interpretation:** Uruz = primitive rage; Ansuz = reason; Thurisaz = the moderating force between them.

### Autumn Equinox — Кеназ, Райдо, Гебо

| Rune | Role | Meaning |
|------|------|---------|
| **Kenaz** | Knowledge (Light) | The torch of conscious understanding |
| **Raido** | Co-Knowledge (Darkness) | The path/journey of experiential understanding |
| **Gebo** | Balance | The gift of equilibrium; the x-shaped rune as the crossroads where Light and Darkness meet as equals |

**Mythological pattern:** Óðinn's initiation at Yggdrasil — suspended between the forces of Light and Darkness, achieving the highest degree of awareness. Gebo as the equinox-point itself: not the victory of one force over another, but the sacred exchange between them.

### Halloween / Samhain — Вуньо, Хагалаз, Наутиз

| Rune | Role | Meaning |
|------|------|---------|
| **Wunjo** | Shamanic Óðinn | Óðinn in his shamanic aspect, consulting the dead through the völva |
| **Hagalaz** | The Völva (hægtesse) | The hail-rune as the völva herself; the hag who dwells between worlds |
| **Nauthiz** | Óðinn's intention | The necessity/driving force behind Óðinn's journey to Hel — his need to understand Baldr's dream |

**Mythological pattern:** Óðinn's journey to Hel, during which the *Völuspá* (Prophecy of the Völva) is recited. The Anglo-Saxon month is *blótmonaþ* ("blood-month") — the time of ritual sacrifice. The dead can cross into the world of the living.

**Additional meanings:** Hagalaz = the forces of Winter, the Frost Giants, and the Purifying Fire. In Holland and Germany, young men wore frightening masks and practiced ritual theft — symbolizing the Einherjar transforming into dead heroes.

### Winter Solstice — Иса, Йера, Эйваз

| Rune | Role | Meaning |
|------|------|---------|
| **Isa** | The frozen stillness | The ice of deepest winter; concentration and preservation |
| **Jera** | The year's turning | The cycle-point where winter turns toward summer; the promise of Baldr's return |
| **Eihwaz** | Yggdrasil | The eternal world-tree sustaining life through the darkness; the Christmas tree as a survival of this belief |

**Mythological pattern:** The greeting of the returning Sun. In eastern Holland, a burning wheel was rolled down a hill on this day, symbolizing the Sun's return.

### Candlemas / Imbolc — Перто, Альгиз, Совуло

| Rune | Role | Meaning |
|------|------|---------|
| **Perthro** | Frigg / the Norns | The goddess of fate and hidden knowledge; the lot-cup from which destiny is drawn |
| **Algiz** | Erda / the Valkyries | The protective rune; Erda as mother of the Valkyries; the swan-maiden's sanctuary |
| **Sowilo** | The returning Sun | Solar force gathering strength; the return of life-forces to the world |

**Mythological pattern:** The ritual kindling of fire. Perthro can be replaced by Erda (as mother of the Valkyries, whose rune is Algiz). Frigg as mother of the sun-god Baldr parallels Erda as mother of the Valkyries — both are goddess-mothers who give birth to the forces that will save/renew the world.

**Key divergences:**
- **Dagaz** = Loki/Verðandi/Heimdallr (Aswynn) vs. Óðinn (English tradition) — Aswynn connects Dagaz to the trickster, the Norn of the present, and the guardian, making it a rune of liminal transformation rather than divine breakthrough
- **Wunjo** = Óðinn (Aswynn) vs. Freyr (English tradition) — Aswynn emphasizes the shamanic-joy of Óðinn rather than the pleasure-abundance of Freyr
- **Raido** = Þórr (Aswynn) vs. Óðinn (English tradition) — Aswynn sees the cosmic journey as Þórr's storm-ride rather than Óðinn's wisdom-path
