# Runic Numerology: Sacred Numbers, Numerical Formulas, and Rune-Number Correspondences

This reference covers the complete system of runic numerology — the sacred numbers of Norse/Germanic tradition, the numerical values of runes, numerical formulas in inscriptions and magic, the Uthark reordering system, cipher systems, and the numerological methods used in the Russian esoteric tradition. It expands the brief treatment in [runic-incantations.md](runic-incantations.md) Section 6 (Numerical Formulas) into a comprehensive treatment.

## 1. The Position-Value System (Standard Futhark)

The most fundamental numerological system assigns each rune its ordinal position in the Elder Futhark row (1–24). This is the system used in both English-language and Russian esoteric traditions, confirmed in runic scholarship and in Sklyarova's "Golden Runes" methodology.

### Elder Futhark Position Numbers

| # | Rune | Name | Aett | Position in Aett |
|---|------|------|------|-----------------|
| 1 | ᚠ | Fehu | Freyr/Freyja | 1 |
| 2 | ᚢ | Uruz | Freyr/Freyja | 2 |
| 3 | ᚦ | Thurisaz | Freyr/Freyja | 3 |
| 4 | ᚨ | Ansuz | Freyr/Freyja | 4 |
| 5 | ᚱ | Raidho | Freyr/Freyja | 5 |
| 6 | ᚲ | Kenaz | Freyr/Freyja | 6 |
| 7 | ᚷ | Gebo | Freyr/Freyja | 7 |
| 8 | ᚹ | Wunjo | Freyr/Freyja | 8 |
| 9 | ᚺ | Hagalaz | Heimdall | 1 |
| 10 | ᚾ | Nauthiz | Heimdall | 2 |
| 11 | ᛁ | Isa | Heimdall | 3 |
| 12 | ᛃ | Jera | Heimdall | 4 |
| 13 | ᛇ | Eihwaz | Heimdall | 5 |
| 14 | ᛈ | Perthro | Heimdall | 6 |
| 15 | ᛉ | Algiz | Heimdall | 7 |
| 16 | ᛊ | Sowilo | Heimdall | 8 |
| 17 | ᛏ | Tiwaz | Tyr | 1 |
| 18 | ᛒ | Berkano | Tyr | 2 |
| 19 | ᛖ | Ehwaz | Tyr | 3 |
| 20 | ᛗ | Mannaz | Tyr | 4 |
| 21 | ᛚ | Laguz | Tyr | 5 |
| 22 | ᛜ | Ingwaz | Tyr | 6 |
| 23 | ᛞ | Dagaz | Tyr | 7 |
| 24 | ᛟ | Othala | Tyr | 8 |

### Northumbrian Additions (Positions 25–33)

In the Russian esoteric tradition's 4-aettir system (documented in [northumbrian-runes-russian-tradition.md](northumbrian-runes-russian-tradition.md)), the Northumbrian additions form the Fourth Aett (Hel's Aett):

| # | Rune | Name | Aett | Position in Aett |
|---|------|------|------|-----------------|
| 25 | ᚪ | Ac | Hel | 1 |
| 26 | ᚫ | AEsc/Os | Hel | 2 |
| 27 | ᛦ | Yr | Hel | 3 |
| 28 | ᛡ | Ior | Hel | 4 |
| 29 | ᛠ | Ear | Hel | 5 |
| 30 | ᛢ | Cweorth | Hel | 6 |
| 31 | ᛤ | Calc | Hel | 7 |
| 32 | ᛥ | Stan | Hel | 8 |
| 33 | ᚸ | Gar | Hel | 9 |

Note: Gar (position 33) is unique — in the Russian tradition it "belongs to all four aettir" and represents the cosmic center point (Gungnir + Yggdrasil). Its position at 33 = 3 × 11, and the 9th position in the 4th aett combines the sacred numbers 3 and 9.

### Aett Sums and Numerological Structure

The three aettir of the Elder Futhark have distinctive numerical totals:

| Aett | Runes | Position Sum | Numerological Reduction |
|------|-------|-------------|------------------------|
| 1st (Freyr/Freyja) | 1–8 | 36 | 3+6 = 9 |
| 2nd (Heimdall) | 9–16 | 100 | 1+0+0 = 1 |
| 3rd (Tyr) | 17–24 | 164 | 1+6+4 = 11 → 1+1 = 2 |
| **Full Futhark** | 1–24 | **300** | 3+0+0 = 3 |

The first aett sums to 36 (= 4 × 9), reinforcing the sacred nine. The full Futhark sums to 300, reducing to 3 — Odin's number. This is not coincidental: the Futhark's structure was recognized as encoding the relationship between 3, 8, and 9 from its earliest analysis.

## 2. The Uthark System (Agrell's Reordered Numerology)

### Historical Background

**Sigurd Agrell** (1881–1937), Swedish professor of Slavic languages at Lund University, proposed the **Uthark theory** in a series of publications:

- *Runornas talmystik och dess antika förebild* (1927) — "The Number-Mysticism of the Runes and Its Ancient Model"
- *Senantik mysteriereligion och nordisk runmagi* (1931) — "Late-Antique Mystery Religion and Nordic Rune-Magic"
- *Die spätantike Alphabet-Mystik und die Runenreihe* (1932) — The definitive work linking runic numerology to late-antique Greek/Hebrew alphabet mysticism
- *Die pergamenische Zauberscheibe und das Tarockspiel* (1936) — Connecting the Pergamon magical disk and Tarot
- *Rökstenens chiffergåtor* (1930) — Analysis of the Rök Stone's cipher inscriptions

### The Core Principle

The Uthark shifts Fehu from position 1 to position 0 (or 24), making Uruz the first rune. The name "Uthark" derives from the first three runes in this new ordering: U-Th-A-R-K (Ur-Thurs-As-Reid-Ken). This creates a "nightside" ordering — revealing hidden, chthonic forces that the standard Futhark's "dayside" conceals.

### The Uthark Sequence

| Uthark # | Standard # | Rune | Key Numerological Significance |
|----------|-----------|------|-------------------------------|
| 0 | 1 | ᚠ Fehu | The unmanifest source; mirrors the Tarot Fool outside the cycle |
| 1 | 2 | ᚢ Uruz | Primal force as origin; the womb of creation |
| 2 | 3 | ᚦ Thurisaz | Duality and conflict; the primordial binary |
| **3** | **4** | **ᚨ Ansuz** | **Odin's rune at Odin's sacred number 3** — Agrell's key alignment |
| 4 | 5 | ᚱ Raidho | Cosmic order structured |
| 5 | 6 | ᚲ Kenaz | Fire at the pentad; the transformative middle |
| 6 | 7 | ᚷ Gebo | Exchange at the harmonious six |
| 7 | 8 | ᚹ Wunjo | Joy as the completed first phase |
| 8 | 9 | ᚺ Hagalaz | Seed crystal of the 2nd aett; 8 = Sleipnir's legs |
| **9** | **10** | **ᚾ Nauthiz** | **Need at the sacred number 9 — "nine Need-runes"** |
| 10 | 11 | ᛁ Isa | Stillness at the decad |
| 11 | 12 | ᛃ Jera | Harvest/cycle at 11; transitions the second aett |
| 12 | 13 | ᛇ Eihwaz | The world-tree at the "hanged man" position (12 = reversal of 21) |
| 13 | 14 | ᛈ Perthro | Mystery at 13; the number of transformation and hidden fate |
| 14 | 15 | ᛉ Algiz | Protection at 14; 1+4 = 5 (the human microcosm) |
| 15 | 16 | ᛊ Sowilo | Solar victory at 15; 1+5 = 6 (harmony) |
| 16 | 17 | ᛏ Tiwaz | Justice at 16; 1+6 = 7 (spiritual completion) |
| 17 | 18 | ᛒ Berkano | Birch/birth at 17; 1+7 = 8 (the generative power) |
| 18 | 19 | ᛖ Ehwaz | Horse/partnership at 18; 1+8 = 9 (Odin's number returns) |
| 19 | 20 | ᛗ Mannaz | Human consciousness at 19; 1+9 = 10 (new cycle) |
| 20 | 21 | ᛚ Laguz | Water/intuition at 20; 2+0 = 2 (duality, reflection) |
| 21 | 22 | ᛜ Ingwaz | Seed/potential at 21; 2+1 = 3 (creation reborn) |
| 22 | 23 | ᛞ Dagaz | Day/breakthrough at 22; 2+2 = 4 (materialization) |
| 23 | 24 | ᛟ Othala | Heritage/ancestry at 23; 2+3 = 5 (human mastery) |
| **24** | **1** | **ᚠ Fehu** | **Wealth as the completion of the cycle; alpha and omega** |

### Key Uthark Alignments

The most significant numerological alignments that the Uthark creates (and which Agrell argued were the *intended* original structure):

1. **Ansuz at 3** — Odin's rune aligned with Odin's sacred number. In the standard Futhark, Ansuz is at position 4, which lacks this resonance. Agrell considered this the strongest evidence for the Uthark ordering.

2. **Nauthiz at 9** — The "Need" rune at the most sacred number in Germanic tradition directly corresponds to the Sigtuna amulet's formula "nine Need-runes" (*níu nauðr*). In the standard Futhark, Nauthiz is at position 10, which has no special significance.

3. **Fehu at 0/24** — Wealth/abundance becomes both the unmanifest source (position 0) and the completed achievement (position 24). This mirrors the Tarot Fool — the unnumbered card that is both the beginning and the end of the Major Arcana cycle.

4. **Hagalaz at 8** — The "seed crystal" of the second aett positioned at the number of Sleipnir's legs and the octad of cosmic order, rather than at position 9 (where the standard Futhark places it).

### Critical Assessment

Agrell's theory has **no support in historical sources** and was never accepted in mainstream runic studies. Wikipedia notes: "The Uthark theory has no support in historical sources and was never accepted in mainstream runic studies, but it has found proponents in occult, esoteric circles and in popular culture."

**Kenneth Meadows** popularized the Uthark in *Rune Power* (1995), presenting a simplified version. **Thomas Karlsson** (founder of the Dragon Rouge magical order) published *Uthark: Nightside of the Runes* (2002), developing the "dark side" interpretation by connecting the renumbered runes to Qabalistic nightside concepts.

Despite its lack of historical basis, the Uthark is widely used in modern esoteric practice — particularly in the Russian tradition — because the numerological alignments it creates are compelling for magical work.

## 3. Sacred Numbers in Norse/Germanic Tradition

### The Number 3 — Odin's Foundation

The number three is the most fundamental sacred number across virtually all Indo-European traditions, and the Germanic world is no exception.

**Mythological attestations:**
- The **three Norns**: Urd, Verdandi, Skuld — past, present, future
- **Three roots** of Yggdrasil reaching into three wells
- **Three aettir** of the Futhark (8 × 3 = 24)
- Tacitus describes Germanic priests picking **three** marked strips for divination (*Germania* 10)
- The Second Merseburg Charm's structure is "based on the number three" (per scholarly analysis)
- **Wednesday** (Óðinsdagr) is the **third** day of the week — Odin's day
- Odin is the third aspect of the triad Odin-Vili-Vé (creation triad in *Völuspá*)

**Runic applications:**
- **Triple Tiwaz** (ᛏᛏᛏ) on the Lindholm amulet — triple invocation of victory
- **Triple Algiz** (ᛉᛉᛉ) on the Lindholm amulet — triple protection
- The Sigrdrífumál prescribes "name Týr **twice**" but triple invocations dominate archaeological evidence
- The **valknut** (three interlocking triangles) has nine points — 3 × 3

### The Number 9 — The Mythical Number of the Germanic Tribes

Per **Rudolf Simek**: "Apart from the number three, which played a role in many other cultures, **nine is the mythical number of the Germanic tribes**. Documentation for the number nine is found in both myth and cult." Per **Mindy MacLeod and Bernard Mees**: "The number nine plays a significant role in Germanic folklore: charms frequently contain nine ingredients or specify a ritual to be performed nine times."

**Mythological attestations:**
- **Odin hung for nine nights** on Yggdrasil (*Hávamál* 139) — the most iconic instance of the sacred nine
- **Nine worlds** (Níu Heimar) of Yggdrasil (*Vafþrúðnismál* 43)
- **Nine Mothers of Heimdallr** — the unique birth of the watchman god
- **Nine Daughters of Ægir and Rán** — the wave-maidens
- Thor takes **nine steps** after killing Jörmungandr before succumbing to venom (*Gylfaginning*)
- Temple at Uppsala: **nine days of sacrifice, nine victims each day** (Adam of Bremen)
- Lejre: similar nine-day/nine-victim ritual (Thietmar of Merseburg)
- Ibn Fadlān's account of the Rus ship-funeral: body left **nine days** before burning
- The **Nine Herbs Charm** (Old English, connected to Woden/Odin)
- The **Æcerbot** (field remedy): bow **nine times** to the east
- Archaeological finds: miniatures with **nine studs** in square/circular patterns

**Runic applications:**
- The Sigtuna amulet formula: "nine Need-runes" (*níu nauðr*) — the most explicit numerical formula in the archaeological record
- **9 × 3 = 27**: The Franks Casket counts 72 characters with value 720; Lindholm's *auduaþlina* values 72; and 27 = 3 × 9 appears as a "power number" in runic inscriptions
- 9 is the position of **Hagalaz** in the standard Futhark — the seed crystal of transformation — and the position of **Nauthiz** in the Uthark — the need-fire at the sacred number

### The Number 8 — Cosmic Order and Generative Power

**Mythological and structural significance:**
- **8 runes per aett** — the word *ætt* itself means "family/group of eight"
- **Sleipnir's 8 legs** — Odin's eight-legged horse traverses all worlds
- **8 Ansuz** on the Lindholm amulet — "eight gods are being called upon"
- 24 = 8 × 3 encodes "generative principle × cycle of power" (per Arcanum.guru analysis)
- Wunjo at position 8 = joy/completion — the culmination of the material phase
- Tiwaz at position 17 (1+7 = 8) = "the just exercise of power — Tyr embodies the most ethical form of the 8 archetype"
- The infinity symbol ∞ is visually similar to 8, connecting to cyclical completion

### The Number 24 — The Complete Futhark

- 24 = 8 × 3: the generative principle multiplied by the creative triad
- 24 = 3 aettir × 8 runes: the complete cosmic ordering
- 2+4 = 6: harmony and balance (the hexad)
- The Franks Casket inscription of 72 characters has value 720 — 72 = 3 × 24

### The Number 27 — Lunar Power

- 27 = 3 × 9: the triad intensified by the sacred nine
- The **Germanic lunar month** was approximately 27 days (per Simek)
- The Franks Casket identifies 3, 9, and 27 as "powerful numbers"
- In the Younger Futhark calendar, 27-day lunar tracking was fundamental

### The Number 16 — The Younger Futhark

- The 16-rune Younger Futhark used for the runic calendar's Golden Numbers 1–16
- 16 = 2 × 8: duality within the generative cycle
- Both the Norwegian and Icelandic Rune Poems are structured around these 16 runes

### The Number 19 — The Metonic Cycle

- The **Metonic cycle** = 19 years (after which lunar phases repeat on the same calendar dates)
- 19 years = approximately 235 lunar months
- The runic calendar uses **16 standard runes + 3 special runes** for the 19 golden numbers:
  - **Árlaug** (ᛤ) = Golden Number 17
  - **Tvímaðr** (ᛥ) = Golden Number 18
  - **Belgþórr** (ᛦ) = Golden Number 19
- These three special runes were documented by **Ole Worm** in 1636 in *Runir seu Danica literatura antiquissima*
- Golden Numbers 19 and 8 alternate every other cycle between having a gap and having no gap — the number 8 appears again as a structural element

### The Number 12 — Jera's Cycle

- Jera (ᛃ) occupies position 12 — "year/harvest," the complete cycle of seasons
- 12 = 1+2 = 3: creative expression, the child of polarity
- In the 2nd aett's arc (runes 9–16), position 12 falls at the midpoint — the point where crisis (Hagalaz=9, Nauthiz=10, Isa=11) gives way to patient renewal
- While 12 is not as structurally prominent as 8, 9, or 24 in Norse tradition, its placement at Jera reinforces the "completed cycle" meaning

### Comprehensive Table of Sacred Numbers

| Number | Norse Name/Meaning | Key Attestations | Runic Connection |

## 4. Numerical Formulas in Runic Inscriptions and Magic

### The Sigtuna Amulet Formula

The most explicit numerical formula found in the archaeological record. From the copper amulet found near Sigtuna, Sweden (dated 1050–1100 CE):

> "I say: **three [runes] Thurs, nine [runes] Need**. I conjure as the keeper of the sanctuary."

In the original: *þrír þurs, níu nauðr*

This is an **alliterative formula** — a recognized type of runic incantation where specific runes are called out with their repetition count:
- **Three Thurs-runes** (ᚦ Thurisaz × 3): Giant-force, protective/threatening power, Thor's hammer
- **Nine Need-runes** (ᚾ Nauthiz × 9): Constrained necessity, the fire born from limitation — amplified by the sacred number

The formula **þrír þurs, níu nauðr** is not merely a description but an incantation — the act of speaking it activates the specified rune-forces in the specified quantities. The eril who carved this was performing a ritual act by writing it, and the alliterative pairing of 3 and 9 (the two most sacred numbers) creates a powerful resonance.

### The Sigrdrífumál Prescriptions

The Poetic Edda's *Sigrdrífumál* (stanzas 5–12) contains the most detailed surviving instructions for runic magic, taught by the Valkyrie Sigrdrífa (Brynhild) to Sigurd. Eight categories of runes are prescribed:

| # | Rune Type | Old Norse | Where to Carve | Numerical Element |
|---|-----------|-----------|---------------|-------------------|
| 5 | Beer-charm | Bjórrúnar | Charm the mead with signs | Full of spells/signs |
| 6 | Victory | Sigrúnar | Sword-hilt, furrow, flat of blade | **Name Týr TWICE** (tysvar Tý) |
| 7 | Ale | Ölrúnar | Horn, backs of hands, **fingernails with Nauð** | **Nauð = position 10** |
| 8 | Birth | Bjargrúnar | Palms, round joints; ask dísir | — |
| 9 | Wave | Brimrúnar | Ship's stem, steering-blade; burn oars | — |
| 10 | Branch/Limb | Limrúnar | Bark, eastward-bent boughs | East direction |
| 11 | Speech | Málrúnar | Wind, weave, set at þing (assembly) | — |
| 12 | Thought | Hugrúnar | From Odin's wisdom (Heiddraupnir's skull-liquid) | — |

**Critical finding:** The ONLY explicit number in the original runic prescriptions is **2** ("name Týr twice"). All other prescriptions specify WHERE to carve, not HOW MANY. Modern interpretations that assign specific repetition counts to each rune type are not found in the original text — they are modern interpolations.

### Rune Stacking in Archaeological Inscriptions

Multiple inscriptions show runes repeated specific numbers of times — the repetition count itself carries magical significance:

| Inscription | Rune | Repetitions | Magical Meaning |
|-------------|------|-------------|-----------------|
| **Lindholm Amulet** (DR 261, 2nd–4th c.) | Ansuz ᚨ | **8** | 8 gods invoked; divine completeness |
| Lindholm Amulet | Algiz ᛉ | **3** | Triple protection |
| Lindholm Amulet | Tiwaz ᛏ | **3** | Triple victory |
| **Kylver Stone** (~400 CE) | Tiwaz ᛏ | **6** (branches) | 6× magnified power |
| **Ellestad Stone** | Kaunan ᚲ | **2, 3** | Cipher formula |
| **Buslubæn** | Isaz ᛁ | **6** | Repeated formula |
| Buslubæn | Sowilo ᛊ | **6** | Repeated formula |
| Buslubæn | Tiwaz ᛏ | **6** | Repeated formula |
| **Franks Casket** (7th c.) | — | **72 chars** | Value 720; 72 = 3 × 24 |

The Lindholm amulet's full inscription reads: *ek erilaz sa wilagaz hateka : aaaaaaaazzznn[n]bmuttt : alu :* — "I, the eril, am called the Cunning One. [8× Ansuz][3× Algiz][N-runes][B-rune][M-rune][U-rune][3× Tiwaz]. Alu."

Scholarly interpretation (from Runes in Sweden, Jansson 1987): "The word 'god' is repeated eight times here, eight gods are being called upon. Three times the Z-rune (Algiz) could refer to (a plead for) protection, while the N-rune (Nauthiz) points to danger. The three T-runes (Tiwaz) represent victory."

### The "Power Numbers" of Runic Repetition

Based on archaeological evidence, the following repetition counts carry specific magical weight:

| Count | Meaning | Archaeological Evidence |
|-------|---------|------------------------|
| **2** | Doubling, confirmation, pairing | Sigrdrífumál's "name Týr twice"; Ellestad double Kaunan |
| **3** | Sacred triad; complete invocation | Triple Tiwaz/Algiz on Lindholm; three Norns |
| **6** | Magnified power; 2×3; harmony intensified | Kylver 6-branch Tiwaz; Buslubæn 6× formulas |
| **7** | Divine invocation; spiritual completeness | 7× Ansuz patterns on some bracteates |
| **8** | Full divine council; cosmic order | 8× Ansuz on Lindholm; 8 runes per aett |
| **9** | Sacred completion; Odin's number | "Nine Need-runes" (Sigtuna); 9 nights on tree |

---

## 5. Deity-Number Correspondences

| Deity | Sacred Number(s) | Basis |
|-------|-----------------|-------|
| **Odin** | 3, 9 | Wednesday (3rd day); hung 9 nights; discovered 9 songs/powers (*Hávamál* 140); 9 worlds; 9 herbs in the charm connected to Woden; 9 twigs used by Woden to smite the serpent |
| **Thor** | 3, 9 | Associated with Thurisaz (#3 in Futhark); 9 steps before death after slaying Jörmungandr; 3 key attributes (hammer, belt, gloves) |
| **Týr** | 2, 3 | "Name Týr **twice**" (Sigrdrífumál); Tuesday (Týr's day); Tiwaz triple-stacked on Lindholm |
| **Heimdall** | 9 | Nine Mothers of Heimdallr |
| **The Norns** | 3, 9 | Three Norns; 9 = 3 × 3, the intensification of fate |
| **Hel** | 9 | Nine days of the dead; nine worlds including Hel |
| **Ægir/Rán** | 9 | Nine daughters |
| **Freyja** | 1, 8 | First aett (Freyja's aett); 8 runes in her aett |
| **Freyr** | 1, 8 | First aett co-named for Freyr; 8 runes; Ingwaz (seed/fertility) at position 22 |

---

## 6. Runic Cipher Systems

Runic cipher systems encode runes using their position within the aett structure, creating a two-number code: **(aett number, position within aett)**. This is both a concealment technique and a magical amplification — the cipher adds layers of numerological meaning to the inscribed text.

### Elder Futhark Cipher Grid

| Position → | 1 | 2 | 3 | 4 | 5 | 6 | 7 | 8 |
|-------------|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| **1st Aett** (Freyr) | ᚠ F | ᚢ U | ᚦ Th | ᚨ A | ᚱ R | ᚲ K | ᚷ G | ᚹ W |
| **2nd Aett** (Heimdall) | ᚺ H | ᚾ N | ᛁ I | ᛃ J | ᛇ Ï | ᛈ P | ᛉ Z | ᛊ S |
| **3rd Aett** (Tyr) | ᛏ T | ᛒ B | ᛖ E | ᛗ M | ᛚ L | ᛜ Ŋ | ᛟ O | ᛞ D |

Example encodings: (1,3) = ᚦ Thurisaz; (2,2) = ᚾ Nauthiz; (3,7) = ᛟ Othala

### Encoding Methods

**1. Branch/Twig Runes:** A vertical trunk with strokes on left and right. **Left strokes = aett number; right strokes = position within aett.** For example, a trunk with 2 left strokes and 5 right strokes encodes (2,5) = ᛇ Eihwaz.

**2. Tent Runes** (used on the Rök Stone): An X-shape with strokes on the four arms. Read clockwise: arm 1 = aett, arm 2 = position, arm 3 = aett of next rune, arm 4 = position of next rune. Each X encodes **two runes simultaneously**.

**3. Isruna System:** Long strokes indicate aett, short strokes indicate position. For example, 2 long + 5 short = (2,5) = ᛇ Eihwaz.

**4. Rune-specific ciphers:** A particular rune shape is used as the base; left-facing branches = aett, right-facing = position.

### The Rök Stone (Ög 136, early 9th century)

The longest known runic inscription in stone (~760 characters), the Rök Stone uses **two encryption methods simultaneously**:
1. **Caesar cipher** (displacement): letters shifted by a fixed number
2. **Cipher runes** (aett-and-position system): tent runes and branch runes

The inscription contains bracketed cipher sequences like `[3:3 = ᚦ]` meaning "3rd aett, 3rd position = ᚦ (Thurisaz)" and `[2:5 = ᛌ]` = 2nd aett, 5th position = Sowilo. The stone is intentionally obscure, possibly as part of a magic ritual where the act of encoding itself holds power.

**Important note:** In some cipher systems, Freyr's ætt and Týr's ætt swap places (1st becomes 3rd and vice versa). The order of runes within the Younger Futhark changed post-13th century (l and m swapped). This is critical for correct decipherment — Jón Ólafsson's *Runologia* (1732–1752) preserves the earlier Viking Age order.

### Cipher Interpretation of Repeated Runes

Some scholars interpret repeated runes as **aett-and-position ciphers** rather than simple multiplication. For example:
- `kk` = Kaunan (1st aett, position 6) + count 2 = 2nd rune in 1st aett = ᚢ Uruz
- `kkk` = Kaunan + count 3 = 3rd rune in 1st aett = ᚦ Thurisaz
- `iiii` = Isa (2nd aett, position 3) + count 4 = 4th rune in 2nd aett = ᛃ Jera

Under this interpretation, the Lindholm amulet's sequence `aaaaaaazzznnn` is not "8 gods + 3 protection + danger" but rather a cipher encoding specific rune-words — making the inscription both a numerical formula AND a coded message.

## 7. Positional Numerology Within the Aettir

### Position Meanings Within Each Aett

Each position within an aett (1–8) carries a thematic meaning that resonates across all three aettir:

| Position | Theme | 1st Aett | 2nd Aett | 3rd Aett |
|----------|-------|----------|----------|----------|
| **1** | Opening, raw force | ᚠ Fehu (wealth) | ᚺ Hagalaz (disruption) | ᛏ Tiwaz (justice) |
| **2** | Manifestation, form | ᚢ Uruz (strength) | ᚾ Nauthiz (need) | ᛒ Berkano (birth) |
| **3** | Tension, protection | ᚦ Thurisaz (thorn) | ᛁ Isa (ice) | ᛖ Ehwaz (partnership) |
| **4** | Intelligence, guidance | ᚨ Ansuz (god/speech) | ᛃ Jera (harvest) | ᛗ Mannaz (human) |
| **5** | Movement, transformation | ᚱ Raidho (journey) | ᛇ Eihwaz (yew/tree) | ᛚ Laguz (water) |
| **6** | Knowledge, mystery | ᚲ Kenaz (torch) | ᛈ Perthro (fate) | ᛜ Ingwaz (seed) |
| **7** | Connection, protection | ᚷ Gebo (gift) | ᛉ Algiz (shield) | ᛟ Othala (heritage) |
| **8** | Culmination, light | ᚹ Wunjo (joy) | ᛊ Sowilo (sun) | ᛞ Dagaz (day) |

### Cross-Aett Position Correspondences

Runes sharing the same position across aettir have resonant meanings — they represent the same archetypal "slot" expressed through different levels of reality:

- **Position 1** (Fehu-Hagalaz-Tiwaz): Raw primal force — wealth, disruption, justice are all expressions of undifferentiated power entering a situation
- **Position 3** (Thurisaz-Isa-Ehwaz): Tension of form — thorn, ice, and partnership all involve the interplay of opposing forces requiring navigation
- **Position 4** (Ansuz-Jera-Mannaz): Intelligence and order — divine speech, cyclical harvest, and human consciousness are all expressions of pattern-recognition and guidance
- **Position 7** (Gebo-Algiz-Othala): Connection and protection — gift/exchange, divine shield, and ancestral heritage all describe the bonds that sustain and protect
- **Position 8** (Wunjo-Sowilo-Dagaz): Culmination and light — joy, sun, and daybreak are all expressions of the achieved state of illumination

### Position 9 as Magical Threshold

In both the standard Futhark and the Uthark, position 9 is the boundary between the first and second phases:

- **Standard Futhark**: Hagalaz at #9 — the "seed crystal" that begins the transformative second aett, shattering the material certainties of the first
- **Uthark**: Nauthiz at #9 — the "need-fire" at the sacred number, where constraint becomes the crucible for transformation

This alignment is not coincidental — the Futhark's structure deliberately places the most disruptive/transformative runes at the sacred number 9, marking the transition from the manifest (1st aett) to the transformative (2nd aett).

## 8. Sklyarova's Numerological Method

### The "Absorption" Method (Метод «Поглощения» Футарка)

Vera Sklyarova (Вера Склярова) — Russian tarologist-occultist, TV personality, and author — developed a proprietary numerological technique for analyzing runic divination spreads, documented in her book *Золотые руны* (Golden Runes, 2018).

The method uses the **numerological positions of runes** in the Futhark to create a deeper layer of interpretation beyond the rune's traditional meaning. When runes appear in a spread, their **positional numbers** are analyzed through numerological reduction, and the resulting number "absorbs" (поглощение) or subsumes additional interpretive layers.

Sklyarova does NOT assign different number values beyond the standard 1–24 positions — her innovation is the **method of interpretation** using those positional numbers through "absorption" and "mandala" constructions.

### Rune Mandalas and Numerological Codes

Part Two of *Golden Runes* covers:
- **Понятие числовой мандалы** (Concept of the Numerical Mandala) — a visual diagram of rune positions forming a numerological pattern
- **Соответствия чисел и планет** (Correspondences of Numbers and Planets) — each number 1–9 (and beyond) associated with a planetary force
- **Чакры и планеты влияния** (Chakras and Planets of Influence) — esoteric anatomy mapped to rune positions
- **Трактовка чисел мандалы** (Interpretation of Mandala Numbers) — specific divinatory meanings for each number in the mandala
- **Нумерологический код любого конкретного события** (Numerological Code of Any Specific Event) — calculating the "number code" of an event by combining rune positions
- **Comparative analysis** of rune mandalas in Latin and Russian transcription

### The Fifth Element: Time

Sklyarova's unique contribution is the addition of a **fifth element — Time** — to the standard four-element system (Fire, Air, Water, Earth). In her classification:
- **Fire runes**: Fehu, Thurisaz, Raidho, Kenaz (and others)
- **Earth runes**: Uruz (and others)
- **Air runes**: Ansuz (and others)
- **Water runes**: (various)
- **Time element**: Dagaz (and others)

The Time element does not have a direct number correspondence in the standard 1–24 system but adds an interpretive dimension when calculating rune mandalas — it introduces the concept of temporal sequence and kairos (opportune moment) into the numerological framework.

## 9. Practical Runic Numerology

### Calculating Rune Values

For name analysis, date calculation, formula verification, and compatibility:

**Single rune value** = position in the Futhark (Fehu = 1, Uruz = 2, ..., Othala = 24)

**Name calculation**: Convert a person's name to runes, then sum the position numbers. For example:
- The name "Odin" → ᛟ(24) + ᛞ(23) + ᛁ(11) + ᚾ(10) = 68 → 6+8 = 14 → 1+4 = **5**

**Formula verification**: A spell's "target number" can be verified by summing the runes used. For example:
- Protection formula (Algiz + Thurisaz) = 15 + 3 = 18 → 1+8 = **9** (the sacred number — a well-constructed formula)
- Victory formula (Sowilo + Tiwaz) = 16 + 17 = 33 → 3+3 = **6** (harmony and magnification)

**Aett value**: The sum of any aett carries its own power:
- 1st Aett (1–8) = 36 → 3+6 = **9** (the sacred nine)
- 2nd Aett (9–16) = 100 → **1** (unity, the source)
- 3rd Aett (17–24) = 164 → 1+6+4 = 11 → **2** (duality, partnership)

### Numerological Reduction

Numbers are reduced to a single digit (1–9) through addition, except for the **master numbers** 11 and 22, which are sometimes preserved:

| Digit | Runic Meaning |
|-------|--------------|
| **1** | Origin, primal force, the All; Uruz/Fehu energy; new beginnings |
| **2** | Duality, partnership, balance; Gebo energy; the need for exchange |
| **3** | Creation, Odin's power, divine triad; Ansuz energy; expression |
| **4** | Structure, order, foundation; Raidho/Jera energy; stability |
| **5** | Change, freedom, transformation; Eihwaz/Laguz energy; the pivot |
| **6** | Harmony, magnification, responsibility; Kenaz/Ingwaz energy; the balance point |
| **7** | Mystery, spiritual seeking, the quest; Perthro/Algiz energy; the sacred path |
| **8** | Power, material mastery, cosmic order; Wunjo/Sowilo energy; the generative force |
| **9** | Sacred completion, Odin's number, transformation; Hagalaz/Nauthiz energy; the threshold |

### Important Caveat

As noted in the Velya forum's original Numerical Formulas section: "This is a vast subject with much modern speculation in the sphere of numerology, which itself as an established system appeared relatively recently, though its beginnings are indeed known from Early Hermeticism."

Runic gematria exists as a **modern reconstruction** (Agrell, Thorsson, Karlsson, Sklyarova) but has **no continuous historical tradition** comparable to Hebrew or Greek gematria. The position-value system is the only numerological framework with any historical basis (via the aett-and-position ciphers), while all interpretive overlays are modern. Practitioners should be transparent about this distinction.
