### Encoding Methods

**1. Branch/Twig Runes:** A vertical trunk with strokes on left and right. **Left strokes = aett number; right strokes = position within aett.** For example, a trunk with 2 left strokes and 5 right strokes encodes (2,5) = ᛇ Eihwaz.

**2. Tent Runes** (used on the Rök Stone): An X-shape with strokes on the four arms. Read clockwise: arm 1 = aett, arm 2 = position, arm 3 = aett of next rune, arm 4 = position of next rune. Each X encodes **two runes simultaneously**.

**3. Isruna System:** Long strokes indicate aett, short strokes indicate position. For example, 2 long + 5 short = (2,5) = ᛇ Eihwaz.

**4. Rune-specific ciphers:** A particular rune shape is used as the base; left-facing branches = aett, right-facing = position.

### The Rök Stone (Ög 136, early 9th century)

The longest known runic inscription in stone (~760 characters), the Rök Stone uses **two encryption methods simultaneously**:
1. **Caesar cipher** (displacement): letters shifted by a fixed number
2. **Cipher runes** (aett-and-position system): tent runes and branch runes

The inscription contains bracketed cipher sequences like `[3:3 = ᚦ]` meaning "3rd aett, 3rd position = ᚦ (Thurisaz)" and `[2:5 = ᛌ]` = 2nd aett, 5th position = Sowilo. The stone is intentionally obscure, possibly as part of a magic ritual where the act of encoding itself holds power.

**Important note:** In some cipher systems, Freyr's ætt and Týr's ætt swap places (1st becomes 3rd and vice versa). The order of runes within the Younger Futhark changed post-13th century (l and m swapped). This is critical for correct decipherment — Jón Ólafsson's *Runologia* (1732–1752) preserves the earlier Viking Age order.

### Cipher Interpretation of Repeated Runes

Some scholars interpret repeated runes as **aett-and-position ciphers** rather than simple multiplication. For example:
- `kk` = Kaunan (1st aett, position 6) + count 2 = 2nd rune in 1st aett = ᚢ Uruz
- `kkk` = Kaunan + count 3 = 3rd rune in 1st aett = ᚦ Thurisaz
- `iiii` = Isa (2nd aett, position 3) + count 4 = 4th rune in 2nd aett = ᛃ Jera

Under this interpretation, the Lindholm amulet's sequence `aaaaaaazzznnn` is not "8 gods + 3 protection + danger" but rather a cipher encoding specific rune-words — making the inscription both a numerical formula AND a coded message.

- **Position 3** (Thurisaz-Isa-Ehwaz): Tension of form — thorn, ice, and partnership all involve the interplay of opposing forces requiring navigation
- **Position 4** (Ansuz-Jera-Mannaz): Intelligence and order — divine speech, cyclical harvest, and human consciousness are all expressions of pattern-recognition and guidance
- **Position 7** (Gebo-Algiz-Othala): Connection and protection — gift/exchange, divine shield, and ancestral heritage all describe the bonds that sustain and protect
- **Position 8** (Wunjo-Sowilo-Dagaz): Culmination and light — joy, sun, and daybreak are all expressions of the achieved state of illumination

### Position 9 as Magical Threshold

In both the standard Futhark and the Uthark, position 9 is the boundary between the first and second phases:

- **Standard Futhark**: Hagalaz at #9 — the "seed crystal" that begins the transformative second aett, shattering the material certainties of the first
- **Uthark**: Nauthiz at #9 — the "need-fire" at the sacred number, where constraint becomes the crucible for transformation

This alignment is not coincidental — the Futhark's structure deliberately places the most disruptive/transformative runes at the sacred number 9, marking the transition from the manifest (1st aett) to the transformative (2nd aett).

### The "Absorption" Method (Метод «Поглощения» Футарка)

Vera Sklyarova (Вера Склярова) — Russian tarologist-occultist, TV personality, and author — developed a proprietary numerological technique for analyzing runic divination spreads, documented in her book *Золотые руны* (Golden Runes, 2018).

The method uses the **numerological positions of runes** in the Futhark to create a deeper layer of interpretation beyond the rune's traditional meaning. When runes appear in a spread, their **positional numbers** are analyzed through numerological reduction, and the resulting number "absorbs" (поглощение) or subsumes additional interpretive layers.

Sklyarova does NOT assign different number values beyond the standard 1–24 positions — her innovation is the **method of interpretation** using those positional numbers through "absorption" and "mandala" constructions.

For name analysis, date calculation, formula verification, and compatibility:

**Single rune value** = position in the Futhark (Fehu = 1, Uruz = 2, ..., Othala = 24)

**Name calculation**: Convert a person's name to runes, then sum the position numbers. For example:
- The name "Odin" → ᛟ(24) + ᛞ(23) + ᛁ(11) + ᚾ(10) = 68 → 6+8 = 14 → 1+4 = **5**

**Formula verification**: A spell's "target number" can be verified by summing the runes used. For example:
- Protection formula (Algiz + Thurisaz) = 15 + 3 = 18 → 1+8 = **9** (the sacred number — a well-constructed formula)
- Victory formula (Sowilo + Tiwaz) = 16 + 17 = 33 → 3+3 = **6** (harmony and magnification)

**Aett value**: The sum of any aett carries its own power:
- 1st Aett (1–8) = 36 → 3+6 = **9** (the sacred nine)
- 2nd Aett (9–16) = 100 → **1** (unity, the source)
- 3rd Aett (17–24) = 164 → 1+6+4 = 11 → **2** (duality, partnership)

### Numerological Reduction

Numbers are reduced to a single digit (1–9) through addition, except for the **master numbers** 11 and 22, which are sometimes preserved:

### Important Caveat

As noted in the Velya forum's original Numerical Formulas section: "This is a vast subject with much modern speculation in the sphere of numerology, which itself as an established system appeared relatively recently, though its beginnings are indeed known from Early Hermeticism."

Runic gematria exists as a **modern reconstruction** (Agrell, Thorsson, Karlsson, Sklyarova) but has **no continuous historical tradition** comparable to Hebrew or Greek gematria. The position-value system is the only numerological framework with any historical basis (via the aett-and-position ciphers), while all interpretive overlays are modern. Practitioners should be transparent about this distinction.
