Use both references together for the richest possible readings. --- ## KEY INTERPRETIVE PRINCIPLES ### 1. Luck vs. Success (Ansuz vs. Jera) A critical distinction for accurate readings: what **Ansuz** interprets as **"luck"** (везение — divine favor, providence, gifts from the gods), **Jera** interprets as **"success"** (успех — positive results earned through correct, directed action). When Jera appears, the outcome is earned, not given. When Ansuz appears, the outcome is gifted or divinely ordained. This distinction profoundly changes how you advise the querent. ### 2. Internal vs. External Manifestation (Thurisaz Principle) For reversible runes, the **upright** position tends toward **external, manifest, active** expression, while the **reversed** position tends toward **internal, passive, latent** expression. Also associated with weakness and compulsion, violation of internal "structure" (moral aspect). **Reversed — Key Distinction:** The situation is complex and tangled. Actions being taken are not as wise as desired; much now depends not on you, and the inability to "look truth in the eye" only worsens matters. The rune recommends pulling yourself together, turning inward, and identifying your true desires. Discovery of previously unknown talents. Embodiment of intentions, clarification of tangled situations and relationships with people, renewal. This is a fortunate time — a time of favorable, desired changes, a time for realizing what was planned, a time of clarity. The rune also speaks of opening/revelation — this may involve relationships with friends and loved ones or with the world at large. **Reversed — The Torch Goes Out:** Darkening, obscuration, the unknown, ignorance, incomprehension. The source of the problem is hidden, obscured, inaccessible. This may be connected to blocked energy — you cannot truly express yourself or realize your potential. Do not confuse the concept of "gift" with the vulgar notion of "something for nothing" (халява). A true gift involves genuine exchange and mutual obligation. **In Complex Spreads:** Will show which combined forces are influencing the current situation, and in which specific area equilibrium or support is lacking. --- #### WUNJO **Upright — Psychological Layer:** Joy, happiness, pleasure, harmony, satisfaction, completion, success, achievement. Often indicates what a person is striving toward — their "true desire." **Upright — Advisory:** At a more everyday level, testifies to the end of a "dark streak" or to some joyful event, but also defines the method of action for achieving it. First, the rune recommends calming down and sorting out yourself and the situation. This is not a rigid recommendation — if the rune has fallen in a positive position, plus as with all runes, you must look at the surrounding context and position in the full spread. **Upright — Deeper Layer:** The sign is connected with a certain shift, perhaps even a radical turning point, that is occurring or has already occurred. The time is arriving to perceive new energy, to look at the world with newly cleansed eyes, and to reap the fruits of your labors. **Reversed — Psychological Layer:** Crisis. Indicates the presence of blocks, dishonesty with yourself, falseness in relationships with those around you. Recommends "finding your true self." **Reversed — Advisory:** Processes are underway that may require self-sacrifice from you and may lead to crisis. Try not to succumb to doubts, do not allow lies and insincerity in relationships with people and with yourself. It is important not to allow a false view of loved ones, of the situation, of the entire surrounding world to form — and not to follow the lead of your environment to the detriment of your own desires. --- ### HEIMDALL'S AETT --- #### HAGALAZ **Core Principle:** Complete rupture, external influence, dramatic changes, liberation, connection, building of the new. The appearance of Hagalaz promises change. These changes may seem catastrophic, but they are only **necessary destructions** — apparent evil to prevent real evil. **Psychological Layer:** Events may occur suddenly and unexpectedly, and their result is impartial, beyond human norms and judgments. However, these "misfortunes" are NOT random — their roots, in most cases, must be sought in the past. Do not forget also that these events, like a framework, form your future. **See also:** Hagalaz Spread Technique (above) for the unique method of using Hagalaz as a structural map for tracing event connections. --- #### NAUTHIZ **Core Principle:** Necessity, need, limitation, compulsion, caution, disputes, retardation, limiting forces of the unconscious, fears, anxiety, guilt, unrecognized needs. **Advisory Layer:** Can indicate a connection between the current situation and the past, warn of the need to pay maximum attention to current actions, speak of their importance for the future. It may make sense to wait, think everything through — the main thing is not to rush. **Hidden Needs:** Can point to needs that must be satisfied and that may be invisible but hinder the achievement of what is desired. The nature of these needs will be revealed and clarified by surrounding runes. --- #### ISA **Core Principle:** Stagnation, restraint, formation, waiting, fixation, detachment, postponement, hidden process. Stagnation and development are combined in one sign — this is a "period of hidden development preceding rebirth." **Advisory Layer:** Usually communicates that in the near future, no external changes or shifts in the situation are foreseen, and recommends concentrating on inner work, showing patience, "not running ahead of the locomotive." **Additional Meanings:** Can also recommend not chasing two hares at once, but calmly thinking everything through, evaluating the situation, and concentrating on one goal. Can indicate that a person is facing a choice, thinking through a situation, trying to make a decision — Isa is not always purely "frozen" but can represent the pause before a decision. --- #### JERA **Core Principle:** Favorable outcome, gradual change (usually for the better), turning point, mutual obligations, expectations, fruits of past actions. **Critical Distinction (Jera vs. Ansuz):** Besides change, shifting periods, completing one cycle and beginning another, Jera can also communicate that your life/matter is moving along an established circle. In both cases, it indicates the **regularity and timeliness** of current processes, their grounding in the past where the foundation was laid. The rune is generally favorable, BUT — do not forget that what Ansuz interprets as "luck" (providence, divine favor), Jera interprets as "success" (positive results as a consequence of correct, directed actions). **Additional Meanings:** Can mean a key turning point, "change of season," transition to another stage, change of direction. --- #### EIHWAZ **Core Principle:** Delay, motivation and will, new beginnings, management, skill, durability, purposefulness, ability to achieve what is desired. Can also designate areas of tension and deep layers of personality, the unconscious, its influence and interaction with it. **Crossroads/Transition:** The rune can indicate that you are entering a "new world," a "new path" — such transitions are rarely smooth. They also require change in the traveler, adaptation to new conditions, acquisition of new qualities. The simplest example is a job change (for someone who held one position for many years). **Doubt and Risk:** Eihwaz often appears in a spread when you have doubts about some enterprise, when you stand before a choice. In such cases, it often inclines toward taking the risk. It can testify to the emergence of obstacles and unpleasant delays on the path, and can designate paths involving risk where obstacles must be overcome and choices made. **Advisory:** Eihwaz does NOT tolerate vagueness of goals and prolonged hesitation. Some authors compare this rune to a "crossroads" and recommend "taking a defensive position" — but this does NOT mean stopping. In any case, the rune recommends patience and endurance, but at the same time assertiveness and persistence. This is not the time for virtuosic play and beautiful flourishes, but the time to choose the most effective, short, and direct paths of action. --- #### PERTHRO **Upright — Psychological Layer:** Search, memories, receptivity, mystery. Can indicate hidden talents, abilities, latent potential. This is a time to move forward, but not to stride mindlessly — this is a door, and each step taken there, beyond that door, will echo as a change within yourself. This is an encounter with yourself — or more precisely, with the unconscious side of your personality. **Upright — Practical Levels:** Can indicate, for example, the arrival of a new person in your life, the birth of a child (not necessarily the querent's), or generally the appearance of something new. Can denote a secret. **The Perthro Principle:** The very meaning of Perthro — "mystery" — can indicate that **the answer to a question cannot be obtained, "this cannot be known."** Therefore, when Perthro appears, orient yourself toward surrounding runes and derive interpretations based on approximate meanings of the rune's name, while also engaging your intuition (which should be done not only for Perthro, but in all rune work). **Reversed — A. Platov's Designation:** "Death of the Past" — but the rune's meaning is not limited to this. It does indeed "cut off" a person from something (from what specifically — see other runes), but additionally: closure of access to opportunities, including the ability to "listen to yourself"; weakening (as in "difficulty of accessibility") of inner potential. **Reversed — Advisory:** Does NOT recommend new beginnings in any case. This is a time to focus more on getting rid of the "burden of the past" than on plans for the future. You are dragging too much behind you — there's no room left for "new baggage." Sort out what you truly need versus what accompanies you by habit. This is a good time for "inventory" and for ridding yourself of what has served its purpose, what is unnecessary — for inner development and preparation. --- #### ALGIZ **Upright — Psychological Layer:** Turn, protection, patronage, care, protective structures of the unconscious, shielding force (as an indication of it), religious aspirations. **Upright — World-Harmony Principle:** Luck is on your side — your actions harmonize with the plans of the world, and the world offers you support and protection. But remember: this is only true as long as you and the world are "on the same path." Maintain your state, listen to your intuition, and you can use this support for as long as possible. In matters concerning a specific undertaking, means it will be successful ("it aligns with the world's plans, doesn't contradict them"). Recommends acting gently, anticipating the situation, and trusting your sensations. **Reversed — Psychological Layer:** Your current goals are unlikely achievable right now. Something is going wrong — time to stop and listen to yourself and your surroundings. Figure out when exactly and at what point your actions lost coordination [with the world/your Self/etc.], when the world began to "reject" you/your matter/your action as a "foreign body." **Reversed — Self-Fulfilling Warning:** If "cone after cone" is falling on you from all sides, don't blame everything around you — look inside yourself instead. The world is as you want to see it, and if from the very morning you set yourself up for struggle, believe me, it will be provided for you — "according to your faith..." --- #### SOWILO **Core Principle:** Healing, wholeness, trust, restoration, direction. Sowilo can point out the optimal direction aligned with your inner "I" — a direction you may not notice, hiding (out of habit) behind Isa not only from the external world but already from yourself. **The Dual Nature of Sowilo:** Promises success, radiance, victory. This is your finest hour — but do not forget that just as you now "overthrow your enemies" and "march toward your throne," so too can you be "punished and overthrown" for wrong actions. Be reasonable and don't get carried away — don't transform from a "kind and just hero" into a "usurper intoxicated by their own superiority." Stay true to yourself. Can indicate a breakthrough to your "I," to higher energies (remember these are Yang-energies), understanding, and illumination. **Achieving Wholeness as Necessity:** Can also express achieving wholeness as a necessity. Recommends analyzing your goals — for without a goal there is nothing to achieve, and with false goals, victory becomes only disappointment. Use the light granted to you to discern your true desires and set goals aligned with them. Define your path and boldly walk it, using the support. Don't miss your bright period — don't squander it on unnecessary wavering. **The Rest Side of Sowilo:** Do not forget that Sowilo contains two sides: if you feel you are losing energy, **retreat** — you may need rest and restoration of strength. In some situations, it recommends retreating to specific areas or paying closer attention to them; these areas can be determined from surrounding runes. --- ### TYR'S AETT --- #### TIWAZ **Upright — Psychological Layer:** Action, courage, authority, loyalty, faith, success, justice, leadership and authority, fairness and honesty, ability for impartial judgments, ability to look at things soberly and resolve conflicts, persistence, determination and strength, self-sacrifice [for protection — a heroic act, heroism]. **Upright — Extreme Meanings:** The rune can indicate an upcoming dispute, active defense of one's interests and rights. In specific cases (judge by external conditions and surrounding runes), can predict participation in military actions and even death in battle (everything depends on the question and is clarified with other runes). **Upright — Advisory:** In any case, recommends not deviating from the chosen path, continuing movement, and showing persistence. Its movement resembles iron's attraction to a magnet — striving in a straight line with full confidence (but don't confuse this with movement that smashes through walls). Nevertheless, these must be thought-out and prepared steps, calculated actions. **Reversed — Deeper Than "Loss of Energy":** In this position, the rune is most often associated with loss of energy, but a more accurate designation is: direction of gaze **"downward"** — into the dark layers of yourself and your life. This is time to understand yourself, to ask: "Am I really right?" "Are my actions correct?" Can denote not only movement but a vehicle in general. Also indicates changes, receiving support, finding a partner (may recommend using someone's help or leaning on a collective). In some situations, can indicate marriage and similar relationships. **Reversed — Psychological Layer:** Obstacle, difficulty of movement, loss of support, partner, friend. **Reversed — Advisory:** Problems related to cooperation. Betrayal, refusal of help, non-provision of help or support, or simply failure to deliver promised actions by a partner (or partners) at the needed moment. Stagnation. Discord.
