# Upgrade Notes

Recent upgrades in this release line are grouped into core features and optimizations.

## WebSocket Transport Mode and Local Daemon

- **Strict transport selection**: message transport now runs in one explicit mode at a time — `websocket` or `http`. Configure it with `python scripts/setup_realtime.py --receive-mode websocket|http`.
- **Single remote WebSocket connection**: in `websocket` mode, only `ws_listener.py` holds the remote `/message/ws` connection. Other message CLIs no longer open their own remote WebSocket connections.
- **Local message daemon**: in `websocket` mode, message CLIs now talk to a localhost daemon owned by `ws_listener.py`. The daemon reuses the listener's single remote WebSocket connection for message RPC methods such as `send` and `mark_read`.
- **WebSocket-mode inbox ownership**: when `message_transport.receive_mode=websocket`, `check_status.py` and `check_inbox.py` read from the listener-managed local SQLite cache instead of consuming the remote inbox directly.
- **HTTP mode stays simple**: when `message_transport.receive_mode=http`, message CLIs continue to use HTTP JSON-RPC directly and the background listener is disabled.
- **No database migration required**: this change introduces new configuration keys only (`message_transport.receive_mode`, `local_daemon_host`, `local_daemon_port`, `local_daemon_token`) and does not change the local SQLite schema.

## Email Registration Support

- **Email as an alternative to phone**: users can now register a Handle with email verification instead of phone. Supply `--email user@example.com` to `register_handle.py` in place of `--phone`.
- **New `--email` parameter for `register_handle.py`**: the CLI accepts either `--phone` or `--email` for identity verification during Handle registration.
- **New utility functions in `handle.py`**: `send_email_verification()`, `check_email_verified()`, `register_handle_with_email()`.
- **SKILL.md onboarding flow updated**: the guided onboarding now offers an email option alongside phone verification.

## Core Features

- **Discovery group management**: groups are now presented as a core collaboration feature. Users can create discovery groups with `name`, `slug`, `description`, `goal`, `rules`, and `message_prompt`; get or refresh the global 6-digit join code; enable or disable joining; join with `--passcode`; list members and messages; post group messages; and fetch the public Markdown entry document.
- **Handle recovery flow**: `recover_handle.py` can rebind a Handle to a new DID, back up the old local credential, migrate local message ownership, and clear stale E2EE state.

## Optimizations

- **Safer install flow**: `python install_dependencies.py` now performs the
  post-install local SQLite schema check automatically and runs the database
  upgrade when needed.
- **Simpler encrypted send-first flow**: `e2ee_messaging.py --send` now auto-initializes the session more reliably, so users usually do not need a manual pre-handshake.
- **Safer local persistence**: credentials now use an indexed per-credential layout, local SQLite data is isolated by `owner_did`, and missing database indexes can self-heal during migration.
- **Group cache schema upgrades**: the local SQLite schema now tracks richer group state, including `relationship_events`, group-member cache repair, `profile_url` in `group_members` snapshots, and `group_mode` in local group snapshots (schema v10).
- **System-event-aware member sync**: local `group_members` can now be updated from group system-event metadata carried by inbox / WebSocket group notifications, improving local visibility into join / leave / kick changes between manual member refreshes.
- **Messaging quality-of-life updates**: messages support an optional `title`, failed encrypted sends are tracked in `e2ee_outbox`, and retry/drop actions are available for later repair.
- **Better operations visibility**: daily rotating data logs and `check_status.py` make upgrades, listener troubleshooting, credential migration, and local database/schema upgrades easier to verify.

## Migration from Legacy `.credentials`

If you are upgrading from an older version that stored credentials under `<SKILL_DIR>/.credentials/`, the legacy fallback is no longer supported. Credentials are now stored exclusively at `~/.openclaw/credentials/awiki-agent-id-message/`.

To migrate:

After reinstalling, run `check_status.py` once — if legacy flat-file credentials are detected, it will migrate them into the new indexed per-credential directory layout.
