# GTIN Exemption Guide

Complete guide for listing products on Amazon without a UPC/EAN barcode.

## What is GTIN Exemption?

GTIN (Global Trade Item Number) exemption allows you to create Amazon listings without purchasing UPC codes. This is useful for:
- Private label products
- Generic/unbranded products
- Handmade or custom products
- Products where the manufacturer doesn't provide GTINs

## Eligibility

### Who Can Apply?
✅ Brand owners with registered trademark
✅ Brand owners without trademark (with proof)
✅ Generic product sellers
✅ Custom/handmade product creators

### Who Cannot Apply?
❌ Products that already have GTINs from manufacturer
❌ Products in categories that require GS1 UPCs (check category requirements)
❌ Resellers of branded products with existing barcodes

## Application Process

### Step 1: Prepare Brand Proof

Choose one or more of the following:

**Option A: Trademark Registration (Best)**
- USPTO registration certificate (US)
- EUIPO registration (EU)
- UK IPO registration (UK)
- Japan Patent Office registration (JP)
- Or equivalent in your marketplace country

**Option B: Brand Website**
- Active website with your brand name
- Product listings showing your brand
- Contact information matching Seller Central
- Professional appearance (not free hosting like Wix subdomain)

**Option C: Product Packaging Images**
- High-quality photos of actual product
- Brand name clearly visible on packaging
- Professional packaging design
- Shows product in use (optional but helpful)

**Option D: Purchase Orders/Invoices**
- From manufacturer showing your brand
- Dated within last 6 months
- Shows quantity and product details
- Must match your Seller Central business name

### Step 2: Apply in Seller Central

1. **Navigate**: Inventory → Add Products → GTIN Exemption
2. **Select Category**: Choose your product category
3. **Select Brands**: Enter your brand name(s)
   - Can apply for up to 10 brands at once
   - Brand name must match exactly as it appears on products
4. **Upload Proof**: Attach your documentation
   - PDF or image files
   - Clear and legible
   - Multiple files allowed
5. **Submit Application**
6. **Wait for Review**: Usually 24-48 hours

### Step 3: Check Status

- **Approved**: You'll receive email notification
- **Denied**: Check email for reason, can reapply with additional proof
- **Pending**: Wait for review (up to 5 business days in some cases)

## After Approval

### Creating Listings with Exemption

1. Go to Inventory → Add Products
2. Click "I'm adding a product not sold on Amazon"
3. Select your category
4. In "Product ID" section:
   - Select "GTIN" from dropdown
   - Check "Does not have a Product ID (GTIN exemption)"
5. Complete other required fields
6. Submit listing

### Important Notes

- **Brand name consistency**: Must match exactly across all listings
- **Category specific**: Exemption applies only to categories approved
- **Marketplace specific**: US exemption doesn't work for UK/EU
- **Reapply for new brands**: Each brand needs separate exemption

## Multi-Marketplace Exemptions

### US (Amazon.com)
- Easiest marketplace for exemptions
- Accepts trademark, website, or packaging images
- Fast approval (usually 24 hours)

### UK (Amazon.co.uk)
- Requires VAT registration for most sellers
- Trademark from UK IPO or EUIPO accepted
- Website must have UK contact information

### EU (Germany, France, Italy, Spain)
- EUIPO trademark preferred
- Must comply with EU product safety regulations
- Language requirements vary by marketplace

### Japan (Amazon.co.jp)
- Most stringent requirements
- Japan trademark strongly recommended
- May require local business entity
- Japanese language materials preferred

## Troubleshooting

### Application Denied

**Common Reasons:**
1. **Insufficient brand proof**
   - Solution: Provide trademark certificate or better website
2. **Brand name mismatch**
   - Solution: Ensure consistency across all documents
3. **Category requires GS1**
   - Solution: Check if your category allows exemptions
4. **Website not professional**
   - Solution: Improve website, add contact info, ensure it's active

### Listing Creation Fails

**Issues:**
- "Invalid Product ID"
  - Fix: Ensure you're selecting GTIN exemption option
- "Brand not approved"
  - Fix: Check exemption status, verify brand spelling
- "Category restricted"
  - Fix: Some categories require pre-approval regardless of GTIN

## Best Practices

### Before Applying
✅ Register your brand name consistently
✅ Create professional website
✅ Design professional packaging
✅ Check if your category allows exemptions

### After Approval
✅ Use exemption consistently for approved brands
✅ Monitor listing health
✅ Consider getting trademark for long-term protection
✅ Keep exemption documentation updated

### Long-term Strategy
✅ Consider GS1 membership if scaling
✅ Register trademark in key marketplaces
✅ Build brand presence outside Amazon

## Alternative: Purchasing UPC Codes

If GTIN exemption doesn't work:

### GS1 US (Official)
- Cost: ~$250 initial + $50/year
- Includes: 10 UPCs, company prefix
- Best for: Scaling brands, long-term sellers
- Website: gs1us.org

### Third-Party Resellers
- Cost: $5-20 per UPC
- Risk: Some codes may be invalid or recycled
- Recommended vendors: SpeedyBarcodes, BarCodesTalk
- Caution: Verify vendor reputation, check reviews

### When to Buy vs. Exempt

| Situation | Recommendation |
|-----------|---------------|
| Testing 1-2 products | GTIN exemption |
| Private label brand | GTIN exemption, then trademark |
| Wholesale/resale | Must use manufacturer UPC |
| Scaling to 10+ products | Consider GS1 membership |
| International expansion | GS1 membership (global recognition) |
