# Production Hardening - Phase 4 Summary

## ✅ Security Infrastructure Built

### 1. Authentication System (`auth.js`)
**Features:**
- API key-based authentication (64-byte keys with `sk_` prefix)
- Per-agent permissions (balance, payment)
- Payment amount limits per agent
- Agent enable/disable functionality
- Automatic config generation on first run

**Usage:**
```javascript
const auth = new AuthSystem();
// Authenticate request
const result = auth.authenticate(apiKey);
// { authenticated: true, agentId: 'demo-requestor', permissions: ['balance', 'payment'] }
// Authorize action
const authz = auth.authorize('demo-requestor', 'payment', 100);
// { authorized: true } or { authorized: false, reason: 'Amount exceeds limit' }
// Create new agent
const { agentId, apiKey } = auth.createAgent('new-agent', ['balance'], 50);
```

**Express Middleware:**
```javascript
app.use(auth.middleware());
```

---

### 2. Rate Limiting (`rate-limiter.js`)
**Features:**
- Request rate limiting (10 req/min default)
- Payment rate limiting (3 payments/min default)
- Payment volume limiting (500 SHIB/min default)
- Per-agent tracking
- Sliding window algorithm
- Automatic cleanup of old entries

**Configuration:**
```javascript
const rateLimiter = new RateLimiter({
  windowMs: 60000,        // 1 minute
  maxRequests: 10,        // Total requests
  maxPayments: 3,         // Payment transactions
  maxPaymentValue: 500    // Total SHIB per window
});
```

**Usage:**
```javascript
// Check request
const check = rateLimiter.checkRequest(agentId);
// { allowed: true, limit: 10, remaining: 7 }
// Check payment
const payCheck = rateLimiter.checkPayment(agentId, 100);
// { allowed: true, remaining: 2, volumeRemaining: 400 }
// Get stats
const stats = rateLimiter.getStats(agentId);
// { requests: {...}, payments: { count, totalValue, volumeRemaining } }
```javascript
const logger = new AuditLogger('./audit-logs');

// Log events
logger.logAuth('demo-requestor', true);
logger.logBalanceCheck('demo-requestor', '0x...', 15000);
logger.logPaymentExecuted('demo-requestor', '0x...', 100, '0xtx...', '$0.003');

// Query logs
const recent = logger.query({
  event: 'payment_executed',
  limit: 10
});

// Verify integrity
const result = logger.verify();
// { valid: true, totalEntries: 42, lastHash: '...' }

// Get stats
const stats = logger.getStats();
```
## 🔒 Security Model
### Layered Security
```
┌─────────────────────────────────────┐
│ 1. Authentication (API Keys) │ ← Who are you?
├─────────────────────────────────────┤
│ 2. Rate Limiting │ ← Are you being reasonable?
├─────────────────────────────────────┤
│ 3. Authorization (Permissions) │ ← Can you do this?
├─────────────────────────────────────┤
│ 4. Payment Limits │ ← How much can you do?
├─────────────────────────────────────┤
│  5. Audit Logging                   │ ← Record everything
└─────────────────────────────────────┘
```
### Default Agent Config
```json
{
  "demo-requestor": {
    "apiKey": "sk_...",
    "permissions": ["balance", "payment"],
    "maxPaymentAmount": 1000,
    "enabled": true
  }
}
```
## 📊 Production Deployment Checklist
### Before Going Live:
- [ ] Change all default API keys
- [ ] Configure appropriate rate limits for your use case
- [ ] Set conservative payment limits per agent
- [ ] Enable HTTPS/TLS (use reverse proxy like nginx/Caddy)
- [ ] Set up log rotation and backup for audit logs
- [ ] Configure firewall rules (only allow necessary ports)
- [ ] Set up monitoring and alerting
- [ ] Create admin API key with restricted access
- [ ] Document incident response procedures
- [ ] Test all security features thoroughly
### Network Security:
- [ ] Use Cloudflare / AWS WAF for DDoS protection
- [ ] Implement IP whitelisting if possible
- [ ] Use VPN or private network for agent-to-agent communication
- [ ] Enable rate limiting at reverse proxy level too
- [ ] Set up fail2ban or similar for brute force protection
### Operational Security:
- [ ] Store private keys in hardware wallet or HSM
- [ ] Implement multi-sig for high-value transactions
- [ ] Set up daily audit log verification cron job
- [ ] Configure alerting for:
  - Authentication failures
  - Rate limit violations
  - Large payments
  - Audit log integrity failures
- [ ] Regular security audits of code and configuration
## 🚀 Integration Example
### Securing the A2A Agent
The cleanest approach is a reverse proxy pattern:
```
┌─────────────┐       ┌──────────────────┐       ┌────────────┐
│   Client    │ ────▶ │ Security Wrapper │ ────▶ │ A2A Agent  │
│ (with key)  │       │  (auth/rate/log) │       │ (port 8001)│
└─────────────┘       └──────────────────┘       └────────────┘
                            Port 8002                  Port 8001
```
**Benefits:**
- Separation of concerns
- Original A2A agent unchanged
- Easy to add/remove security layers
- Can secure any existing A2A agent
**Implementation:**
1. Run A2A agent on localhost:8001 (not exposed)
2. Run security wrapper on public port 8002
3. Wrapper validates auth, rate limits, logs
4. Wrapper proxies valid requests to 8001
5. Wrapper captures responses and logs outcomes
## 📈 Monitoring & Metrics
### Key Metrics to Track:
- **Authentication:** Success/failure rate per agent
- **Rate Limiting:** Hit rate, which agents are close to limits
- **Payments:** Volume, frequency, average amount, gas costs
- **Errors:** Failed payments, API errors
- **Performance:** Response times, queue depth
### Audit Log Analysis:
```bash
# Count events by type
jq -r '.event' audit-2026-02-11.jsonl | sort | uniq -c

# List all payments today
jq 'select(.event == "payment_executed")' audit-2026-02-11.jsonl

# Calculate total SHIB sent
jq -r 'select(.event == "payment_executed") | .data.amount' audit-2026-02-11.jsonl | awk '{sum+=$1} END {print sum}'

# Check integrity daily
node -e "const {AuditLogger}=require('./audit-logger.js'); console.log(new AuditLogger().verify());"
```
## 📝 Current Status
**Completed:**
✅ Authentication system with API keys
✅ Rate limiting (requests + payments + volume)
✅ Audit logging with hash chain integrity
✅ Authorization with permissions & limits
✅ Express middleware for all features
✅ Admin endpoints for monitoring
**Testing:**
✅ Authentication working (blocks unauthorized requests)
✅ Audit logs created and verified
✅ All security modules functional
**Integration:**
⚠️ Proxy wrapper needs debugging (body rewriting issue)
Alternative: Direct integration into A2A agent (done in `a2a-agent-production.js`)
**Recommended Next Step:**
Use nginx or Caddy as reverse proxy with Lua/middleware for security layer, or integrate security checks directly into A2A agent executor.
